The four-part series is comprised of episodes dedicated to hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanoes. You can watch the full story behind our Hurricane Ida chase in the Hurricane episode and see lots of our tornado footage in the Tornado episode. We're excited to catch our fellow storm chasers in the other episodes as well!

A great capture from our own Gabe Cox yesterday! Here's his story behind the shot:

"After wrapping up some film work yesterday afternoon, I decided to run out to a storm that was beginning to erupt about 15 minutes away. By the time I got to the storm it started to drop bolts at a high rate. Scrambling to set up my camera I chose to focus on an area of the storm that had been the focal point of the lightning. Of course, when I did that the lightning became less frequent in that spot and began flashing to the left of my framing. By this time the lightning was striking within 1-2 miles of my location and I was starting to get nervous about being out of the car. But I thought I'd give the new lightning hotspot a try and panned my camera to the left. With bolts striking so close I opted to leave my camera running and hop in the car. Flash... outside the frame again. Another flash... just outside the frame. It was starting to rain and I was about to give up on the shot, but I decided to give it one more minute. Then, directly down the center of the frame, huge bolts struck less than 1 mile away in rapid succession. Within a few seconds I heard that glorious crackle and concussive boom. Success! I ran out, grabbed the tripod and stuffed it into my car just before the heavy rain moved in. It was a fun, short local chase and a great reminder of why I love doing this so much.

*Side note: As are the joys of using new gear, my video settings weren't set correctly and the clip as a whole isn't very useful. I did manage to salvage this freeze frame which was a nice consolation prize for trial by fire. I'll be ready for the next time!"

One year ago today, Category 4 Hurricane Ida slammed into southern Louisiana with sustained winds of 150mph. It was another assault on the LA coastline, one in a series of devastating storms over the course of two years. Our team set up in Houma, LA where we watched first-hand the destructive force that a Category 4 storm can unleash on a community. After striking Louisiana, Ida marched northeast over the Eastern United States. Even though it was no longer a hurricane, Ida's remnants wreaked havoc producing a tornado outbreak and catastrophic flooding in the Northeast. Ida is the 5th costliest tropical cyclone on record, causing an estimated $75.25 billion in damage.

Two years ago Hurricane Laura made landfall in Cameron, LA as a destructive Category 4. It was the 10th strongest U.S. hurricane on record to make landfall in the US with peak sustained winds of 150mph. The storm struck during the hyperactive 2020 hurricane season and caused over $19 billion in damage. Tragically 81 people lost their lives. Six weeks later, as recovery efforts continued, the same area was ravaged by Hurricane Delta.

Despite the name, our team is as determined to intercept and document hurricanes as we are tornadoes. We have intercepted every category of hurricane (1-5) including the last Category 5 storm to hit the US mainland, Hurricane Michael (below). The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season is quiet for now, but long-range forecasts continue to show an active season.
