Hey all! Amanda here! I LOVE studying human behaviour. It’s my true passion and part of my future work! Jon and I recently recorded a podcast on the different generations. I’d like to share something that relates.
I recently resigned from my current full-time, well-paying, permanent job at halfway to my pension. The differences in initial reactions from Baby Boomers and Gen X vs. Millennials and Gen Z peaked my human behaviour antennae 📡 🤔
Boomers & Gen X, who grew up with a focus on job and financial SECURITY:
- “Really? Those last few years to your pension will fly!”
- “What will you do??? Maybe taking a leave of absence until you figure things out would be the better route.”
- “Here’s a job ad for way less money and that I have no idea if you have an interest in…” repeat
Millennials and Gen Z, who grew up with a focus on job FULFILLMENT and financial FREEDOM:
- “I’m so proud of you for looking after yourself.”
- “You’re really going after what you want, and that’s so admirable.”
- “Life is too short, I’m so glad your chasing your passions.”
- “GOOD FOR YOU!!”
Of course there were exceptions (like my mom, who supports everything I do 🥰😘), but overwhelmingly, this was the response, and I get it. All these people genuinely CARE about me, it’s just the ideas of success and life goals that are different. It’s the way we grew up - in different worlds! Boomers came right after the war and hard financial times, where obtaining ANY job was the goal, and rightfully so for that time period. Because of the hard work put in by boomers, and the betterment of the economy, Millennials and beyond got to enjoy better lives, more choices, and we actually get to pursue our DREAMS ♥️ Pretty cool, right?? Anyway, like I said, this stuff is my bread and butter, so I had to share 🙂 I truly believe each generation gets better than the previous, and that there is HOPE for our crazy world!
While Jon and I are on our Podcast break, feel free to tune into any episodes you may have missed, like this one! And I’d love your feedback too!!
"Back in my day!" You've heard it. Or perhaps you've said it? It seems like human nature to compare ourselves to those before us and those that are coming after. After all, your generation is in fact the best one, right? Not so fast. I know it's h...
