How often should your pet’s heart be checked? 🩺❤️
It’s one of the most common (and important!) questions we’re asked… especially since heart disease in pets often progresses silently.
Here’s what you need to know 👇
🐶 Pets without a known heart condition
• Annual vet check-ups are usually enough.
• During these visits, your vet will listen for murmurs or rhythm changes.
• Senior pets (7+ years) or predisposed breeds, like Cavaliers, Dobermans, and Maine C***s may benefit from 6-monthly check-ups and additional screening such as:
• Chest X-rays
• Blood pressure checks
• NT-proBNP (blood test for heart stress)
• Echocardiogram if a murmur or arrhythmia is detected
❤️ Pets with a diagnosed heart condition
• Rechecks every 3–6 months are ideal, depending on the stage and severity.
• More frequent visits may be needed if symptoms change or medications are adjusted.
• Monitoring may include:
• A physical exam
• Weight and resting respiratory rate
• Blood pressure, ECG, or echocardiogram
🧠 Why it matters:
Regular monitoring helps detect changes early, allowing for timely treatment adjustments and helping your pet live a happier, healthier life.
