Student nurse loses marriage over underwear remark
A STUDENT nurse of Lusaka is on the verge of losing her marriage after she loudly wondered why her husband was obsessed with his torn old-fashioned bambas (pants) when other men had moved on to wearing classy boxers.
Mwape Mwenda aged 31 of Lusaka's Garden House Compound spoke herself to singleness when she innocently advised her husband Godfrey Daka, 45 to move with fashion trends and emulate other men in wearing boxers instead of 'bambas" but the remarks did not sit well with him.
Being an experienced police officer, Daka's detective and investigative instincts kicked in and took his wife through an interrogation session to understand how she came to how she came to know that other men loved to wear boxers.
In the end, the couple's 12 year old marriage took a downward turn after Daka concluded that his wife had been seeing other men.
But in a effort to bring the marriage back on course, Mwape brought the matter before the Lusaka Boma Local Court seeking reconciliation.
Mwape explained that although her husband was a womanising alcoholic who sometimes did not provide for her and the couple's three children, she believed that he would change with court counsel.
She denied ever laughing about her husband's pants saying he was just trying to create false reasons to divorce her.
She insisted that she had no idea what men loved to wear under their trousers.
"He even stopped me from talking to my male cousins, I don’t even have their contacts because he is too protective and jealous over me. I told him that my parents wanted to seat us down, but he refused saying he cant listen to useless people. He has no respect for my parents and his family doesn’t listen to me because he is the bread winner,” complained Mwape.
But determined to leave his wife, Daka insisted that he had no intentions of going back home with her the very day.
"Just give us a divorce today because I don’t want to go back home with her today, let her parents get her, she is too boastful for me,” said Daka.
He said Mwape was big pretender who changed her ways the moment she got into nursing school.
" She started comparing me with other men. Can you imagine, one day, she laughed at me after seeing my torn underwear, when I asked her why she never bought me new pants since she’s the one I give my card, she told me that pants are old fashioned for men so I should start buying boxers instead because they are trending. Up to now, am still wondering were she saw the trending boxers from,” said Daka.
Daka also accused his wife being violent and boastful saying she always bragged about how she would not suffer even he left her because she was beautiful.
“When I found her, she was just a grade 12 failure with only a pass in English, I had to pay for her GCE which she re-wrote for 5 good years. Now I have spent K17, 150 for her first year in school. But I don’t want her anymore because she has changed and I don’t want to be among the many police officers in the media for killing their spouses,” said Daka.
In passing judgement, Senior Local Court Magistrate Mpundu Mwape Fwambo advised the couple to convene a family meeting to resolve their problems but Daka refused.
“As court, we do not advise divorce. The children will be the one’s effected. Your issues are something that can be resolved once you seat down. Your children are too young to grow up with separated parents. But since one party does not want, we can not force you as the court. Therefore, this reconciled has failed, aggrieved party to sue for divorce,” said Magistrate Fwambo.
