Essex on Film Mostly by drone but also ground based.

A personal account of our travels around the Essex countryside and beyond visiting and filming various towns, attractions, historic buildings and places and generally anything else we find of interest.

A flight over my hometown of Rayleigh in Essex. Rayleigh is a market town and civil parish in Essex, England, between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea, 32 miles (51 km) east of central London. It had a population of 32,150 at the census in 2011

An hour and twenty minutes out in the sun with the drone this morning over at Wallasea Island & Marina and this is the end result. It may look tranquil but boy was the wind blowing up the river at times. Still got some good flying time in though. Had a glorious all day breakfast and a pint at The Wardroom too.

Enjoy, share and if you haven't already please like and subscribe.

An early start this morning and a road trip up to the Suffolk/Norfolk border for a few hours of aerial videography at Somerleyton Hall & Gardens. A special thanks to the 4th Baron Somerleyton and those in the estate office for granting permission for the flight. Two and a half hours spent capturing as best I could the sheer splendour of this spectacular Tudor/Jacobean country house and its garden. The video really doesn't do it justice.
Enjoy the video. Please leave a like, comment and if you haven't already please subscribe to the channel.

The next drone filming project and this one I'm really looking forward to. The owners of Somerleyton Hall estate in Norfolk have very kindly given me permission to spend the day filming on their land 🙂 So, a day off next Wednesday and I'm seriously worried three drone batteries may not be enough 😃

So, 6am on a Sunday morning found me down on the Essex estuary coast in the little old town of Leigh on Sea. Well, more specifically along the foreshore in what is locally known as 'The Old Town'. A place I know well as I spent many many days and nights there in my youth in either one or all of the three pubs that sit in this wonderful part of the Essex coast.

The weather and wind finally allowed a little time at this stunning 16th century Tudor palace today. Set in the Essex countryside in between Colchester and Maldon and set to open its gardens to the public again on May 19th with the planned reopening of the buildings later on in the year.
As you can see in the video the barn is currently undergoing extensive period restoration and refurbishment.
A very special thanks go the the owners Nick and Sheila Charrington for allowing me free reign to roam around the grounds and the cup of tea.

A second trip out to Maldon on the River Blackwater today after last weeks visit was cut short by the sheer amount of people making the most of the gorgeous weekend sun we had. This time I got to spend a little more time in the air. Filmed in 2.7k and 4k UHD

The historic maritime town of Maldon is located at the mouth of the Blackwater Estuary and is known across the world for its connections to the Saltmarsh Coast, with the famous sea salt, iconic Thames Sailing Barges and the infamous mud race. It is the second oldest town in Essex and received a Royal Charter from Henry II in 1171.

Maldon's Hythe Quay is a historic working waterfront that is home to the largest collection of active Thames Sailing Barges. From the quay, you can take a trip on one of these barges with Topsail Charters and the Thames Sailing Barge Trust, or you can also take a cruise aboard the Viking Saga pleasure boat and take in views of the Blackwater Estuary.

A short video of todays trip out to Bradwell on Sea in North East Essex to visit one of the oldest Christian churches still in use to this day, The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall and on the way home a stop off for a bite to eat and a quick flght up the promenade at Maldon. Unfortunately I couldn't stay airborne to long as it was extremely busy so err'd on the side of caution and called it a day after 15 minutes. No auto piloting used, all manual controls. Which was one of the main points of the trip. A big thank you to Julia Ferrant for giving me the heads up on this idilic little piece of history.

A rather overcast and cold flight over the River Colne at Wivenhoe in Essex. Somewhat reduced quality due to a SD card error on the drone so all the video you see was recorded at 1080 HD at 30fps straight to the phone.

The River Colne is a small river that runs through Essex, England and passes through Colchester. It is not a tributary of any other river, instead having an estuary that joins the sea near Brightlingsea. (Wikipedia)

With the weather on the turn and brighter and longer days upon us I recently spent a glorious couple of hours or so down on the Thames Estuary at a place I'd never been to before, despite living within 7 miles of it all my life.

Run and maintained by the Essex Wildlife Trust and Essex County Council, Two Tree Island is a small island lying north-east of Canvey Island and south-west of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, England. It covers 257 hectares (640 acres) and is connected to the mainland at Leigh by a single span bridge.

It's 9am on a rather grey and overcast Sunday morning in Essex giving the new DJI Mini 2 drone it's maiden test flight just getting used to the controls, the camera and overcoming the initial apprehension and nerves.

Wat Tyler Country Park is a country park located to the south of Pitsea, Essex.[1] The area was inhabited from the Bronze Age onwards and at one time was the location of the Pitsea Explosives Factory.

The park is named after Wat Tyler, the leader of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381, which started in nearby Fobbing before spreading to London. The Revolt failed and Tyler was killed, but he is remembered as a people's champion against the rich and powerful.

Facilities include the RSPB Wildlife Garden and Visitor Centre, and a miniature railway

I've got two new projects coming out in the next couple of weeks or so. The 1st one will be a 100+ pictorial history of Southend on Sea from 1900 to 1990, which I'm already working on and the 2nd will be films off our time spent away next weekend down in Wiltshire at Avebury and Stonehenge and will include the time spent in the small market town of Royal Wooten Basset.

Lots of time spent editing in front of the computer but I guarantee they'll be worth it ;)

With quant little red brick riverfront cottages and centuries old pubs with views across the river it's a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours or so on a Summers afternoon.
