Congo-Brazzaville: Coup Rumors Denied by Government

On Sunday, reports flooded the social media platforms, alleging that the army has taken over from the president Denis Sassou Nguesso in .

The president had just said on X that he had arrived the United States for the 78th United Nations General Assembly, meanwhile rumors of a coup swirl in Congo Brazzaville.

The country's Minister of Communication and Media, Thierry Moungalla, denied the rumors on X (Twitter), calling them fake news, while assuring public opinion that calm reigns in Congo Brazzaville.

Who is Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of Congo Brazzaville ?

The 79 years old Denis Sassou Nguesso has been Congo's president for 38 years. He is a military officer by training who first came to power in 1979, after serving as the director of State security for six years. He succeeded Marien Ngouabi, who was assassinated in 1977.

Nguesso ruled until 1992 when he lost the presidential election to Pascal Lissouba.

During his first presidential reign, Nguesso shifted the country's links from the Soviet block to French, and other Western oil companies, to whom he gave contracts, to exploit oil in Congo Brazzaville.

He returned to power in 1997 following a period of civil war. He later won elections in 2002 and in 2009.

In 2015, Nguesso spearheaded constitutional change, that removed term and age limits, and he was reelected the following year that is in 2016.

In 2021, he won again, extending his long rule.

The National Agency for Information and Communication Technology, ANTIC has developed a new software “Doc@uthANTIC” for the verification of official documents before circulation on social media.

With the advent of Social media, cyber criminality has been on a rise in Cameroon.

The most recent was the circulation of a fake document on platforms declaring a public holiday the day prior to Lion's first match in Qatar.

The Communication body in other to fight against cyber criminality and to ensure the security of Cameroonian cyberspace has created this new software Doc@uthantic to combat the circulation of fake documents online.

According to the Director General of ANTIC, Prof Enow Ebot, the new software has a QR code that will be used for official documents. He says verification can be done using just an android phone to scan the QR code to extract information that the electronic signature has inserted on the document.

He says the creation of this application is for the protection of all state documents and to ensure the authenticity of documents that are published.

The population is called upon to ensure the authenticity of documents before publishing on social media platforms using this new application.

: African dignatories to Queen Elizabeth II's Funeral NOT driven by a head of State.

Viral images showing the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa on the driver's seat, claiming he drove otherAfrican dignatories to the Queen's funeral is FALSE. Zimbabwe was represented at the funeral by the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Frederick Shava.

A Facebook user with over 60,000 followers posted six pictures including a picture of Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa on the driver's seat of a bus. The accompanying write up claimed that "there were no drivers, African presidents were driven by Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa"

The same picture has been shared across different social media platforms with similar caption.

FACT-CHECK

Checkers237 did a search on the image using Lens. We found out the picture was used on the website of Zimbabwean Radio, Nahanda Radio on April 17, 2019. Details in the story revealed the "President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday commissioned 39 of 300 buses Government has secured as part of measures to address the plight of commuters that are being ripped off by unscrupulous private operators."

's team used Yandex and TinEye, both image verification sites, and confirmed, the image of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the driver's seat of the bus was taken in 2019.

Therefore, claims that the President Emmerson Mnangagwa drove his counterparts to Queen Elizabeth II's funeral today are FALSE.
