Congo-Brazzaville: Coup Rumors Denied by Government

On Sunday, reports flooded the social media platforms, alleging that the army has taken over from the president Denis Sassou Nguesso in .

The president had just said on X that he had arrived the United States for the 78th United Nations General Assembly, meanwhile rumors of a coup swirl in Congo Brazzaville.

The country's Minister of Communication and Media, Thierry Moungalla, denied the rumors on X (Twitter), calling them fake news, while assuring public opinion that calm reigns in Congo Brazzaville.

Who is Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of Congo Brazzaville ?

The 79 years old Denis Sassou Nguesso has been Congo's president for 38 years. He is a military officer by training who first came to power in 1979, after serving as the director of State security for six years. He succeeded Marien Ngouabi, who was assassinated in 1977.

Nguesso ruled until 1992 when he lost the presidential election to Pascal Lissouba.

During his first presidential reign, Nguesso shifted the country's links from the Soviet block to French, and other Western oil companies, to whom he gave contracts, to exploit oil in Congo Brazzaville.

He returned to power in 1997 following a period of civil war. He later won elections in 2002 and in 2009.

In 2015, Nguesso spearheaded constitutional change, that removed term and age limits, and he was reelected the following year that is in 2016.

In 2021, he won again, extending his long rule.
