ISSUE 5 is OUT now! 🚀

PDF, flip-book, and blog post versions of each article are available on our website (link in bio) 🔗. Audio readings will be posted soon, so stay tuned! 🎙

💙We want to thank all of our contributors — writers, editors, illustrators, graduate student reviewers, e-board members, professors, and so many of you— for making this issue possible.

🤰 — our theme for this issue celebrates the rhythms of renewal and rebirth we experience everyday. As our editor in chief Sam wrote, “this issue… details several lines of inquiry that each reconceptualize some small parcel of neuroscientific knowledge: from integrating new frameworks with classic theories to insights about the brain casting light on how we situate ourselves in this complex social world.” GMCU Issue 5 gen-bod member (yes all 70 of you), we’ve redefined “Renaissance” several times together; our hard work paid off. 💪

Grey Matters welcomes you to discover and rediscover corners of neuroscience with us through Issue 5. 🔎

Swipe to read a message from Sam & names of everyone involved this semester. ➡️

Want to get involved with Research at Columbia as an undergraduate? 🧠🔬
Join us April 4th (Wednesday) at 6:00pm, Lerner Hall Room 569 along with Dr. Davachi, Dr. Harraez, Dr. Gottlieb, and Dr. Behnia as they give us the inside scoop of their labs! 🥼RSVP Allison (our event director) at [email protected]. 📧

Find out more about each of our panelists below:
Dr. Lila Davachi (Davachi Lab, Columbia University) studies how memories are encoded, retrieved, and consolidated and how we build memories that allow us to later reconstruct the episodic details of the past.

Dr. Arturo Torres-Herraez (Kellendonk Lab, Columbia University) studies the neural-circuits underlying misinterpretation of auditory information (phenomena thought to relate to hallucinations in schizophrenia)

Dr. Jacqueline Gottelieb (Gottlieb Lab, Columbia University) studies the neural mechanisms of attention and decision making, with an emphasis on the frontal and parietal cortex as well as the mechanisms of informations sampling, active learning, and curiosity, and their influence in decisions, attention, and cognitive control.

Dr. Rudy Behnia (Behnia Lab, Columbia University) studies how sensory information is encoded within the brain and what this encoding looks like at a circuit and cellular level. Additionally, how these sensory circuits are modulated by internal states such as motivation and attention.

Great way to meet the neuroscience/cognitive science/psychology community at Columbia & Barnard! See you there. Thank you to our lovely event director for putting this together 💓
