Within the Wires is an immersive fiction podcast which tells stories through found audio from an alternate universe. Podcasts are more popular than ever right now, perhaps even more so due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is a great time to start listening to them if you haven’t started yet! Podcasts are perfect for multitaskers, as you can listen to them whilst cleaning or on a walk....

It’s inevitable - podcasts are fast becoming the entertainment format of the future. Podcast listenership has been increasing year-on-year, with an estimated 15.6 million people tuning in to listen in 2020 – a number likely boosted by the increased number of people searching for something to do during lockdown. This development is seen as both a blessing and a curse by the nation’s bookworms....

In response to the recent death of Sarah Everard, University of Birmingham students, through the social media organised a nighttime vigil/peaceful protest on Wednesday 17th March. This event took place on the Vale, with students bringing candles and some bringing signs. Students then formed a queue where they would address the crowd, often talking about their own experiences of sexual harassment or addressing the movement and need for change more widely....

Ever since Lana Del Rey released her debut album Born to Die, I have been in love with her music. She has this kind of vintage, old Hollywood persona which I find so unique and which shaped the entirety of my teenage years. Her music is my go-to for when I want to be in my feelings; I feel like she's captured so many of the emotions of our generation and perfectly captures a sense of nostalgia and the way that this is simultaneously comforting yet also painful to relive....

I feel like one of the defining moments of the first pandemic was the period of harmony following the release of Netflix's Tiger King; people were united in the belief that Carole Baskin did in fact kill her husband, creating a surge in pop culture of Tiger King related content. This obsession with a Netflix original true crime series was experienced several years ago with the release of…...

Content warning: contains discussions of racism and su***de. One of my earliest memories is when I was called a ‘P*ki’ in primary school. I had no idea what the word meant or why the boy said it and naively thought it was a funny joke, as he was laughing the whole time. So I then repeated it back to him, but the teacher heard me and I was punished, missing out on Enrichment....

Nothing over the past year has been normal in the slightest, except perhaps the government incompetence that we all seem to have become so accustomed to. Life for university students in particular now looks vastly different, with a complete switch from in-person seminars to fully online learning, resulting in a lower standard of teaching across all subjects. For so many students who were already struggling, this has caused a plethora of additional challenges – a large proportion of which seem to have been avoidable; yet the extortionate price that we’re paying for this still hasn’t changed, stuck at over £9000....

A children's ballet performance by Alexandre Dinaut via Unsplash The arts provide entertainment, skill, enjoyment, happiness, and for some, above all, purpose. In COVID-times, the arts have certainly played a major role in many people’s day-to-day schedules, whether that be streaming music from their favourite artist, scrolling through Netflix to fill the seemingly never-ending days, or finally picking up that unread book that has been sat on their shelf for months....

To have browsed Twitter over the last few weeks without seeing Music, directed by Sia and released worldwide on 12 February, is unthinkinkable. Describing the musical, Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus states: “offensive in its depiction of autism — and painfully misguided in essentially every respect — Music is a vanity project that begs to be turned down.” The release has garnered thousands of angry responses on social media, however this isn’t to be overlooked as a bandwagon....

During the first lockdown, I found myself stumbling from bed to sofa and back to bed again in the same pair of comfy sweats day after day. It felt appropriate not to care how I looked when there were much more pressing things to be worrying about - like a global pandemic. By Viktor Forgacs via Unsplash Words have power. To ensure society doesn’t get any more dystopian than it already is, that is essential to remember. George Orwell showed us this in his fascinating novel ‘1984’ – his prophetic warning about living under a totalitarian regime. Eerily recognisable similarities are becoming increasingly evident, from being under constant heavy surveillance to extremely biased propaganda, with rising fears of censorship amongst a whirlpool of fake news....

What is MACNE or MASKNE? Mask Acne is caused by long hours of wearing a mask at work, in the library or travelling, causing breakouts in the form of small whiteheads or pimples in the areas covered by your mask. Somaya Critchlow and engaging with a racially exclusive artistic history Kingly. Commanding-yet feminine. This is the striking impression of Somaya Critchlow’s ‘Figure Holding a Little Teacup’ displayed in her solo exhibition in London ‘Underneath a Bepop Moon.’ Sat, legs spread upon a Chippendale chair wearing only a scarf, hot pants and heels, the figure emits an easiness that is singularly masculine....

Jeremy Corbyn in 2017 by Sophie Brown via Wikimedia Commons It is an undeniable fact that in recent years Jeremy Corbyn has become one of the most divisive and controversial members in British politics, even amongst his own party. This seems to have culminated with Labour removing the whip from him, but was this the right decision?...

Music is one of the most universally adored art forms in the world (I think we can all agree,) as it holds emotional power with the likes of which is difficult to truly guess at. Its variety is something that is also very difficult to find in various other art forms, totally transforming itself time and time again throughout the history of humanity: from baroque to progressive alien deathcore (yes that really is a thing) there is going to be a something out there to float your boat....
