The four main areas of federal spending are national defense, Social Security, healthcare, and interest payments, which together account for about 70% of all federal spending. Entitlements is 49% (2.45T) of the federal budget. Entitlement programs include Welfare Programs, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Unemployment.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, in 2020, the federal government spent about $1.1 trillion on Social Security, $900 billion on Medicare, and $450 billion on Medicaid.

To put in perspective the US spends the most on its military in the world relative to its economy size and that constitutes 11% ($754 B)of the federal budget.
