Earlier this month, I had promised to hold a virtual meet & greet + information session for all incoming Bangladeshi students at the University of Alberta. I was amazed by the overwhelming response I received from all the students. After reviewing the responses, I tried to figure out the most necessary things and reached this conclusion. Do let me know if you wish to hear about something else! Keep all your questions for the Q&A session.
Most Bangladeshi students will be leaving for Canada between the first week and mid of August: I feel that Monday, 28th August would be a perfect date to host this session. 1️⃣ All incoming Bangladeshi students at the UofA — whether you are a freshman or have taken a year of classes online, are welcome to join. Additionally, incoming Bangladeshi students to NAIT, MacEwan, and Concordia will also find many segments of this session informative.
2️⃣ This session is geared towards clearing the awkward confusion / answering the FAQs, and fixing the common mistakes every Bangladeshi student makes upon their arrival in Alberta. Plus, you shall find some invaluable tips to save money, avoid the (common) traps in Canada, find your convenience, and help yourself settle in Edmonton.
3️⃣ This session is designed to highlight the matters that are not usually covered in the formal orientation(s) hosted by the UofA. I learnt all these the hard way so I'd really love to help out my fellow citizens to carve out a smooth transition path.
4️⃣ However, this session will *NOT* cover any admission information for prospective students.

In a remarkable display of ingenuity and dedication, Team Viridian, a group of exceptionally talented Bangladeshi high school students, has captured the spotlight by clinching the coveted Outstanding Achievement award at the esteemed British International Education Association (BIEA) 2023 Youth STEM competition. The Bangladeshi students have emerged as the sole representatives from their country to achieve recognition on the award list this year. The commendable achievement has earned them an exclusive invitation to participate in the competition's grand international showcase scheduled for October.

The BIEA Youth STEM competition, located in London, UK, serves as a platform for young minds to channel their innovative prowess toward addressing pressing global environmental concerns. It encourages these bright minds to utilize their creativity to devise solutions that hold the potential to shape a sustainable future.

Hailing from diverse corners of Bangladesh, the prodigious Team Viridian comprises Samiha Sultana Jahin, a student leader from Halishahar Cantonment Public College, Sabiha Ulfat, an A-level candidate from Chattogram, Anika Akram Orpi from Gurudayal Govt. College Kishoreganj, Subruka Mahabub Arpi from Narayanganj Govt. Mohila College, and Musfiquzzamam Mahim from Dhaka Residential Model College. Guiding these young talents on their extraordinary journey was Professor Dr. Mohammad Muslem Uddin, former Chairman of the Oceanography Department at the University of Chittagong.

Hello everyone,

We are back with our motto of making your "Application journey" mess & fuss free. Today we are gonna give you guys insights into one of the most important, underrated and misguided parts of College Application - Documentation.

Before starting your college applications, you will need a number of things to be ready beforehand to avoid any further complications. And we are here to make sure you don't forget those.

• Passport:

Starting with the basics - The passport; something that's often neglected by us but consumes a lot of time if done later. It is a misconception that a passport is needed only for visa purposes whereas even just for registration of standardized tests like SAT and IELTS, the passport is required. Sometimes to apply to some universities, you will need a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport. So all in all, a passport is a must if you decide to apply for abroad studies. So make sure your passport is ready with up-to-date validity.

• Academic Transcripts/Certificates: Most Foreign universities require you to submit your academic transcripts/ mark sheets from class 9 to class 12. Your high school certificates are also required, for example, HSC and SSC certificates or O-levels & A-levels certificates.

• SAT/ACT:

SAT/ ACT is a key part of the application if your aim is the United States. Although recently, many universities have gone SAT/ACT optional but it is always wise of you to submit your SAT /ACT scores to increase your chances of getting in.

• English proficiency Tests: If you reside in a non-native English-speaking country e.g, Bangladesh, you are required to give a proficiency test of your English skills. This is mainly because your classes will be taken in English so it is required for you to have prior knowledge about it.

The test scores are almost needed everywhere including the USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia etc. IELTS and TOEFL are one of the two most commonly used English Proficiency Tests. Each university has its own minimum IELTS or TOEFL scores required to get accepted into its program. So make sure before applying, to check the minimum IELTS band / TOEFL score required on their website.

• Recommendation letter / LORs: Recommendation letters play a pivotal role in your application. The main role of this letter is to get to know about you, your skills and your achievements on a personal level from your peers and teachers. Depending on your course, you might be asked to submit two or three LORs.

• Statement of Purpose/Essays: This is a game changer for those who know how to utilise the opportunity well. You will be given different prompts, among which you need to choose one and write about it. A statement of purpose especially in the States is a significant document. It can talk about your Personal background, Financial background, academic details, immediate and long-term goals etc.

Along with the Statement of Purpose, there are some other essays you might need to submit. For instance, supplementary essays and also an Essay to describe your extracurriculars.

• Bank Statement: This is a financial statement which will prove your sponsor (the one who will pay your tuition fees) have sufficient funds to provide for you.

• Curriculum Vitae/CV: This will give an overview of your entire profile highlighting your extracurriculars, skills, internships and work experiences.

• Portfolio: This is not mandatory for all majors. If you are applying for art, design, architecture etc related programs, a portfolio can be pretty useful to showcase your skills to university officials. They will also increase your chance of getting into the university.

These are all the necessary documents required for you to apply to Foreign universities but there might be some other documents needed, so always make sure to check the requirements on the university website before applying. We wish you all the best in your journey!
