Toy-Ventures is a quarterly publication from PlaidStallions press, who brought you MegoZine and Rack
Group shot of some of the 8" weirdos in my collection for our "Mego-Knock-Off-HQ" Facebook group. I posted it hoping others would follow suit and share their collections, and I was right! I saw a whole bunch of cool stuff that I don't own. A simple thing but one that raised my spirits in a time where they needed it.
First Look: 50th anniversary The Spectre by Mego
In honor of Father’s Day, here is a sneak peek at one of the new DC 50th anniversary superheroes – the Spectre – who first appeared in More Fun Comics #52 in 1940.
A member of the Justice Society and the Justice League, the Spectre is a major part of the magical DC universe.
As someone who grew up reading those amazing 100 page giant DC Comics, the golden age stories of the Spectre made me wish he was part of my MEGO line-up.
Now he joins the wave 19 characters, hopefully in time for this holiday season.

I rarely buy new toys, but I need to talk about McFarlane Toys Super Powers right now.
This is my custom Blue Beetle figure. It was made in my dorm room at Stong College (Kaiser House,Woooo!) in 1991. It's made using a Toy Biz Dare Devil figure, which was the style at the time. It won me a prize in Wizard magazine!
I remember painting it (including my initials on the feet, something my mum did on all of my toys) on my dorm desk, listening to Dee-Lite on my grandfather's stereo and dreaming of a toy company making the Bug vehicle to go with it.
The immediate thought was, "That's never going to happen." My love of Blue Beetle came from the Giffen/DeMatteis era of Justice League comics. Ted Kord was the Bill Murray of the DCU and Bobdammit, my superhero role model, but, let's face it, he wasn't popular.
Flash forward to now, and McFarlane released not only a beautiful Ted Kord Beetle figure but this amazing vehicle that exceeds my expectations. This is a brilliant toy; it hits me where it should, and I want to celebrate it. I've put my custom Beetle in its proper home and will now see it every day as I enter my workspace.

The past few weeks have been tough and my wife took me away for a quick weekend away hunting for stuff in Buffalo.
At one of my favorite flea markets in the world I noticed this Toy-Ventures ad on a billboard.

80s Mego Lion Rock KO in an amazing karate GI. I'm not sure who released it, there are no tags or body markings. I'm going to guess Fleetwood toys as they made figures like this for the action movie "The Patriot" in the 80s but I could be wrong. I love the outfit!

Thanks to the help of my friend Jerry, Stretch Monster creator (and legendary Kenner toy designer) Tim Effler was presented with issue 12 of Toy-Ventures magazine at this weekend's "Rogue Fun" Star Wars gathering in Atlanta. The latest issue features Tim's memories of working on the Kenner Stretch Armstrong line and it was honour to work with him.
