Happy New Year!!! This year brings the debut of our Album Focus show!
On this day in 1982, one of my favorite “live” albums was released. In 1982, I had only recently started listening to Ozzy. Buying Diary of a madman (still my all-time favorite album).
Randy Rhoads was tragically killed only a few months after I bought the Diary album. I remember hearing that he was releasing a live album of sabbath songs. I had only heard a little of Dio Sabbath at that point, so the Speak Of The Devil version was all I had known.
I absolutely love the performance from each musician, and Ozzy’s vocals, while not live, were fantastic. I regularly take a lot of criticism for this, but I prefer these versions of the Sabbath songs over the original versions. There’s an energy present in these versions of the songs missing from the original, and I prefer Ozzy’s vocal tone on his solo albums.

On this day in 2007, we lost Kevin DuBrow, lead vocalist of Quiet Riot.
I remember when Metal Health was released, and how I listened to it over and over again. Kevin was actually underrated. He was a great singer, and could deliver live—right up until the end.
Thunderbird was a tribute to Randy Rhoads, who was actually supposed to play on the track, but today I think it also serves as a fitting tribute to Kevin and Frankie, as well.
It is in Kevin Dubrow. He started on a journey to the origin of Randi. R.I.P.

I LOVE the Speak Of The Devil versions of the Sabbath songs so much! was in his prime during this time. Yes, I know the vocals were redone in the studio, but it's still a great performance! The band were incredible on this album!

Remembering the late, great Randy Rhoads on his birthday today. Born on this day in 1956, Randy began his career as a founding member of Quiet Riot, and would later find fame-----and cement his legendary status----with Ozzy Osbourne.

This has always been one of my favorite KISS songs. It's an instrumental off of their first album, so I was amazed that Ace plays this one live. It's really the Ace Frehley band, but still.
Been listening to Mötley Crüe’s Generation Swine today.
Though not in their traditional style, it does sound like an updated version of their sound, and is quite underrated, and often overlooked.
I really wish they had pursued the sound they created with Primal Scream, though. If Vince had never left, I think that song represents the logical next-step for them.
Still, Generation Swine is a better album than is often remembered. It would be interesting to put it in a throw down with the ’94 S/T album.

Sad to hear of Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins' passing.
I loved his drumming style, and have been a fan of the Foo Fighters for a long time, and even covered their songs in bands I was in years ago.
He was always smiling, having a great time, and so full of life. This is a sad day.

On this day in 1986, one of the greatest Van Halen was released. 5150 was a phenomenal album, and the title track stands as one of the finest examples of Edward Van Halen’s rhythm playing.
While I prefer the Roth-era, the Van Hagar era produced some fantastic music, and this stands as one of the best.
10 years ago today, Van Halen released their "reunion" album with David Lee Roth, A Different Kind Of Truth.
I think this album is quite underrated. The lyrics are some of Roth's best, and just when you thought Eddie had done all he could on guitar, he surprises us with his ferocious, inventive playing on this album that reveals a guitarist still in his prime.
This is probably my favorite track off the album, She's The Woman. This is Van Halen at its best!

RIP Meat Loaf.
He was an extremely talented singer/performer who always gave 100%, and beyond, whether in the studio or performing live. As music moves more into the land of samples, using tracks live, and auto-tuned vocals, an artist like Meat Loaf is a dying breed. He will be missed.
