Tomorrow, August 13, at 12:01 PM (PhST), the sun will be directly passing over Manila once again! For around a minute, vertical objects like poles and sticks will cast almost no shadow, creating what is known as a "Zero Shadow" effect.

A "Zero Shadow" Day occurs 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘇𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲. Because the sun's rays are directly overhead, shadows fall exactly under standing objects, resulting in almost no shadow. This phenomenon can only be observed in the tropics, specifically between the Tropic of Cancer (~23.5° North) and the Tropic of Capricorn (~23.5° South), and occurs twice a year. This 2024 in Metro Manila, the first Zero Shadow Day will occur on 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟵 and another on 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟯.

In the Philippines, the sun's path will be passing overhead of Mindanao around April, gradually moving northward until the June Solstice. After the solstice, it will migrate southward, passing first over Northern Luzon by July.

While this event is referred to as a "Zero Shadow" Day, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿 (𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿) 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 around noontime and is highly dependent on one's location and sky conditions (preferably sunny).

Top gymnasts, like our very own Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, demonstrate the law of conservation of angular momentum by adjusting their arm positions.

When they launch into the air, their angular momentum remains constant. By moving their arms closer or farther from their body, they change how their mass is distributed, which affects their rotation speed. Stretching their arms out slows their rotation while bringing them closer speeds it up. This technique allows gymnasts to perform complex twists and land safely. At the end of their routine, spreading their arms helps slow down their rotation, ensuring they don't over-rotate and fall backward, and also looks impressive to judges.
