Individuals who have undergone a total laryngectomy (removal of the entire larynx or “voice box”), now breathe through a hole in their neck called a “stoma”. This has many functional implications including for emergency situations. For instance, it is imperative that CPR is performed through the stoma, not the mouth - otherwise you would simply be pumping air into their esophagus!
