HEALTH MINISTRY APPROVES TWO PRIVATE FACILITIES FOR COVID-19 TESTING

Two private facilities have been approved to commence testing for Covid-19 on Monday, September 7th, 2020.

These are the first facilities which have received such approval from the Ministry of Health as required by the Testing of Covid-19 Regulations which outlines the application process and requirements for those facilities wishing to undertake testing either locally or through the referral of samples overseas to accredited laboratories for testing, a government statement said.

An application process was undertaken in which interested facilities were required to submit documentation outlining standard operating procedures to conduct testing, collect samples, safety procedures, proper disposal of waste, protocols, details of staff training, particulars of equipment to be utilized as well the of submission of other relevant supporting documentation which had to meet required standards, according to the press release.

“Approval was granted on the basis that only RT PCR testing can be carried out and that only asymptomatic individuals i.e. persons who do not have symptoms or signs consistent with Covid-19, can be tested.”

“This does not include testing individuals identified through contact tracing. Other conditions for the approval were also stipulated in writing which included reporting requirements to the Ministry of Health as Covid-19 is a notifiable disease and the management of the Covid-19 pandemic is a Public Health responsibility,” the statement added.

Name of facilities are: AccuView Diagnostics and Grace Bay Medical

InterCaribbean Airways Is Expanding to St Vincent

Fast-growing Turks and Caicos-based regional carrier interCaribbean Airways is expanding again, this time with new service to the island of St Vincent.
Beginning Oct. 1, the carrier will be operating flights between Barbados and St Vincent.

InterCaribbean will be running the flights on Embraer 120 aircraft, the company said.
It’s part of a wider expansion for interCaribbean at Barbados’ Grantley Adams International Airport that also includes new service to Grenada, Dominica and Saint Lucia, helping to fill the void of now-shuttered regional carrier LIAT.
The company now services 27 cities across the wider Caribbean region.

Meet the explorer who paddled across Lake Ontario over 20 consecutive days

Seasoned Canadian-Turks and Caicos explorer Mario Rigby finished a paddle across Lake Ontario earlier this month to promote domestic travel and diversity in the outdoors.
From Hamilton to the Thousand Islands, Rigby travelled 355 kilometres over 20 consecutive days through thunderstorms, 40km/h+ winds, and choppy, empty seas. He compared the journey to his 2018 paddle across Africa’s third largest lake, Lake Malawi, just one of the many feats on his adventure resume.

Mario originally planned to spend his late-summer months working on the Auyuittug Projext— a journey to the most northerly places on the continent, to learn about how climate change is affecting Indigenous communities. But given the restrictions brought upon by COVID-19, he had to scramble and come up with another plan.
“I didn’t have the timeline to paddle all of the Great Lakes, but given Lake Ontario’s proximity to my home, Toronto, it seemed like the perfect challenge to promote domestic travel,” Rigby said. “I wanted to show people that you don’t have to travel around the world to find adventure.”

Additionally, Rigby used the kayak project to partner with Toronto-based My Stand, an organization that works with at-risk-youth.
“When my family migrated to Canada from Turks & Caicos we were quite poor, so I wanted to give back, act as a mentor, as well as a role model in the program,” Rigby explained.
Through raising awareness and money for the organization, as well as organizing camping trips with the organization, Rigby aims to encourage youth to get out and see the world, and act as role model in an outdoors environment that lacks diversity.

Turks & Caicos Shines at Luxury Social Life Hamptons Polo Event

The Turks and Caicos Tourist Board, the exclusive tourism authority for the Turks and Caicos Islands continues to market and promote the destination as the preferred luxury destination in the region. The Tourist Board in partnership with Turks & Caicos Collection, representing its 5-star private island property Ambergris Cay, showcased the very best the destination had to offer at the exclusive Social Life Hampton’s Polo event.

The Hamptons continues to be a core source market for the destination, with a large high net worth audience. With the reopening of the Turks and Caicos borders, this event was a key part of the strategy used to market and promote the destination as a luxury destination. The Tourist Board also used this platform to promote the new TCI Assured procedures. Emphasis was placed on both pre-travel entry requirements and the on-island health and safety protocols. The Tourist Board continues to advocate for sustainable tourism growth and development that puts both the safety of visitors and residents at the forefront.

The Hamptons Polo event was a part of the holistic campaign to target the Hamptons and the higher-end East Coast area. As a part of the campaign, the destination was also featured in the July 2020 issue of the Premiere Luxury Social Life Magazine. The campaign looks to not only reach the audience for high-end accommodations and natural beauty but also reach the destination’s new niche market of Private Jets, which is a key component of Tourist Board’s strategy to attract visitors during the pandemic and beyond.
Both the Hamptons Polo event and the magazine issue garnered rave reviews for the destination and are predicted to positively impact tourism arrivals to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

18/08/2020

On this Tuesday morning, there are two areas of concern over the Atlantic Ocean that are being closely studied by NHC for potential development.

One is a tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean Sea producing an area of disorganized thunderstorms and gusty winds. Significant development of this system is unlikely during the next couple of days while it moves quickly westward at about 20 mph across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea. After that time, however, the wave is forecast to move more slowly westward, and a tropical depression could form late this week or this weekend when it reaches the northwestern Caribbean Sea. It has a low (20 percent) chance of formation during the next 48 hours and a medium (60 percent) chance during the next five days.

The second is a broad area of low pressure located about 900 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, producing a concentrated area of showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are conducive for further development, and a tropical depression is likely to form within the next couple of days while the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the central and western portions of the tropical Atlantic. It has a high (70 percent) chance of formation during the next 48 hours and a high (90 percent) chance during the next five days.

A native woman representing Turks and Caicos as a finalist in Miss Caribbean UK

A young Turks Islander woman has been named a finalist in the Miss Caribbean UK competition and she wants to highlight her home country Turks and Caicos.

Farrah Grant, 22, is passionate about supporting education for people in underprivileged communities and that was solidified when she did a youth volunteering trip in Nepal in 2016.

She said: “When I was there I saw the disparity between the children and I wanted to do something to help.”
She raised more than £1,000 for VSO ICS, which supplies educational programs around the world, and for the Mills Institute, a school in Turks and Caicos,
Farrah has never entered a pageant before but she said she was drawn to the mission of Miss Caribbean UK - “positively promoting the Caribbean”.
The finals will be held in the fashion district of Fonthill Road in Finsbury Park on September 27.

NEW TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMS OVER THE TROPICAL ATLANTIC OCEAN

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

NHC is issuing advisories on newly formed Tropical Depression Eleven. At 5 p.m. AST, the center of the depression was located over the tropical Atlantic Ocean about 1110 miles (1790 km) west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and about 1450 miles (2335 km) east of the Lesser Antilles. It's moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through Wednesday. A west-northwestward motion at a similar forward speed is forecast to begin Wednesday night and continue through the rest of the week.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast to take place during the next 48 hours, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm by Wednesday night. When that occurs, it will be named Josephine.

Barbados welcomes InterCaribbean Airways

On Monday, August 4, the Government of Barbados officially welcomed interCaribbean Airways, which has set up a Southern Caribbean hub in Barbados.
Led by Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, the Hon. Kirk Humphrey, the delegation which included officials from the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), were on hand to witness an interCaribbean Airways flight arriving from Grenada.
Initially, two Embraer 120 30-seat aircraft will be based in Barbados, with two additional aircraft arriving towards the end of August 2020. interCaribbean Airways will offer double daily air service from St. Lucia to Barbados, as well as a once-daily service from Dominica, and 10 weekly flights from Grenada, with St. Vincent to be added soon. Discussions are also underway for the addition of services from Barbados’ top source markets in the region, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, by the end of 2020.

Trevor Sadler, Chief Executive Officer of interCaribbean Airways, stated that “the launch of this double daily service between Saint Lucia and Barbados is in direct response to our growth plans derived from LIAT’s current challenges. The airline business is about providing a service that our customers want and this flight, is a welcome addition to our network, to serve their needs.”
Speaking on the new partnership which came after months of Government meetings with several airlines, Humphrey said that “I am thankful to be able to have this partnership with you, to be that hub for you in the Southern and Eastern Caribbean… It is always my belief that partnerships that are forged in difficult times are often the ones that last. Thank you for choosing Barbados.
“This partnership will be about bringing people closer together because we are strong believers in regionalism; strong believers in the idea that we are stronger together… bringing Barbadians closer to other people in the Caribbean, bringing Caribbean people closer to Barbadians,” Humphrey said.

THREE HARTLING GROUP RESORTS IN TURKS & CAICOS HAVE REOPENED TO GUESTS

The Hartling Group, award-winning owners and operators of The Sands on Grace Bay, The Palms Turks & Caicos, and The Shore Club Long Bay Beach, proudly announce all 3 resorts are open to guests as of Wednesday, July 22. The resorts introduce extensive new protocols and procedures to encourage the well-being of staff, guests, and the community at the resorts in this new age of travel. The executive team at The Hartling Group has spent countless hours learning, training, and preparing to create “Health in Hospitality”; the team has implemented new ways to enhance the sanitization and safety process without sacrificing the high level of service and personalized luxury experience that guests love and expect at the resorts.
At the forefront is the introduction of a Hartling Group Sanitation Officer, a newly created position that will be responsible for the quality maintenance of the sanitation protocols to ensure guest and staff safety and health. This person will check that all new protocols are executed at the highest level at each of the three resorts on a daily basis. The Sanitation Officer will have a toolkit on hand, providing things like sanitizer, masks, and more on-demand, and will be easily identifiable by guests and staff for assistance or questions as needed.

As a bespoke boutique organization, The Hartling Group is taking this opportunity to shape the future of luxury travel in the region with thoughtful and well-executed new measures. Guests will find staff who are more intuitive and anticipatory than ever before, as they’ll be managing much of the day with low to no contact to align with social distancing expectations. Since early May, there have been daily training with every department, and new PPE materials and equipment have been purchased for the three resorts. Staff won’t enter guest rooms while occupied, and housekeeping has a 24-point checklist that must be satisfactory before a room is turned over to a new guest. There will be an increased amount of time between check-ins and outs, and guests can book with confidence knowing that the experience will be exactly as described: restful, relaxing, an escape, all while recommendations from global health leaders are being followed and implemented.
