I hope you are doing well and taking deep breaths and processing out loud with all the inner work happening this week. Dr. Monique Perry (Please listen to her wisdom in episode 1 of the podcast!) taught me that this is heart work, and it takes a lot of energy and reflection. As a part of my own reflection, I wrote a blog post and recorded it as a podcast episode to share my personal process of confronting my own internalizes biases, and how you can do the same. I also share some of my research on:
⭐️ Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and how it illustrates the effects of oppression of the Black community
⭐️ Statistics that show where systemic racism is leading to the deaths of Black people besides police brutality, including Black maternal health, COVID-19, and long term health issues.
⭐️ Examples of implicit bias and guided questions to process the short term and long term effects of fighting the racism you find in yourself and others.
I don’t want this to detract from the Black voices sharing their stories and tools for how to actively identify and speak up against racism. If you’re not following already, I highly recommend learning from and supporting Rachel Cargle (https://www.facebook.com/rachelecargle), founder of The Great Unlearn. You can support her on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/thegreatunlearn.
I have updated the links at https://www.grownupguidepodcast.com/instagram to include the donation page for the NAACP, and a link to their campaign. I explain why supporting the NAACP is an important step for me in this episode.
I know a lot of creators were pausing on sharing content last week to make space for important discussions, but I hope those discussions will continue this week, next week, next month, next quarter, and next year. This shouldn’t be a one time thing and the Grown Up Guide community will always be a place where we can talk about important topics, especially where it pertains to the success factors for all people, starting with the Black community.
