Further Background FYI....
Over these past three or more months we have all been and we are all still in the same Boat. Actually, not really the same Boat. More accurately we are in the same Sea.
It might be better to say that the Boats we are each in differs depending on our own unique circumstances.
The way our lives have been impacted will range anything between it having been a significantly negative or significantly positive experience. In the same way, some might feel just a temporary inconvenience or pain, while others will be permanently effected for the rest of their lives. Many might not yet even know or have yet realised what this shared experience will result on ourselves.
For those in the situation such as ours, the only certain conclusion is the world, as it was for us before Covid 19, will not be returning. The world, as it was for us, has gone for good. This isn’t necessarily to imply negativity. It all depends on whether Mandy & I could see the pros of this situation to be greater than the cons.
From one perspective, following almost a decade of struggling to rebuild our business to a level of success we previously enjoyed 10 years ago, just us we felt we were back, Covid 19 destroyed it all in a sudden instance. Our entire source of income and all future prospects appears to be lost forever.
Yet on the other hand, like a rabbit caught in a fox’s grasp we became resigned to accept a reality we were powerless to avoid. By setting our losses aside, the period of lockdown these past months has transpired to be one of the most fulfilling positive experiences of my entire life. I think Mandy would also agree it has also been so for her too.
Past 10 years Summary
One can’t begin to guess how many different business directions I have taken over the past ten years, and how, for each new idea, we had to first overcome the disappointment of the previous failure, again having to accept defeat with the reflection in the mirror and to have to face up to whatever further attributes I might lack or need to improve on.
The start ups included a new innovational Video DJ concept, A Food Festival, An Events Award Event for the Jewish Event Industry, A Volunteer Programme in Israel, A Video Tape Transfer service, becoming a Toast Master, Returning to be a Mobile DJ and many more.
Still driven and determined to achieve financial stability and security so needed in my life, the most recent business was “Make This Happen Ltd”. Starting a new idea once again, I must continue to hope that all ideas also need an element of good luck to succeed and that I might have better luck this time.
Around the middle of last year I had begun arranging small public music based events in my local area. Following the success of those first events, we gradually built it up, taking the event concept to other locations around the South East of the UK.
By the end of January we had secured a schedule of over 200 events for 2020, many of which were already selling well. Some were even sold out within days.
So cautiously optimistic as I tend to be these days, in early February I repeatedly asked myself, my wife and associates within the business, if they could think of how the prospects of the business could possibly go wrong. The answer constantly received was a confirming ‘Nothing’.
The Lockdown Weeks
In the first couple of weeks, despite immediately enjoying prolonged time of hanging out with my wife and daughter, my initial response had been to remain transfixed on the TV, positioned on the sofa in the same clothes night and day, watching every news update. I could not find any comfort when others tried to make me understand that everyone was in the same boat as us.
Forward to around week 3 of lockdown, I was now more accustomed to our new new routine. I started to develop an adaptation of the events we had been organising prior to the Lockdown, accommodating the new distancing restrictions being imposed on public life. The concept was called “2 Metres Apart” and the intention was to plan a Drive In type event, to be launched as soon as it was appropriate to do so.
Around the same time I began to re-explore a previous interest of mine, to stream music on-line. I always had a desire to perform a radio show as a Radio Host. Coincidently, just as I began to look into the concept, MixCloud launched a unique facility that offered precisely what I required to stream the kind of radio stream I had envisaged. This new platform was the only one of its kind. I started using it just days after it was launched.
Eventually I applied the 2 Metre Apart brand to a Live Steam I have been presenting every day since mid-April. I present my breakfast show every morning and, over recent weeks I have also arranged other DJ type events on-line, attracting up to 6,500 listeners. Via my breakfast live stream I have established a small but loyal group of listeners, all of who re-enforce the opinion that the shows I produce are of a far greater standard of appeal and professionalism than most other live streams other DJs are doing.
The Evolution of 2m Live Steam
The natural evolution of the live streams have developed to incorporate my wife being included as a significant part of the video content. Typically she is seen preparing breakfast, cooking other meals or performing other domestic work as I present a music show, consisting of different theme or genre each day.
Our daily radio stream has now been going on for almost three months and has therefore become a significant part of our daily life. Our only motivation for doing this is simply we love it. For me, especially, I have realised how extensive my music knowledge is and I have a natural talent to be able to host a radio show as I do. It has been so fulfilling to share my love of music, especially with a loyal audience who continually express their enjoyment of being part of our unique live streams.
On a few occasions we have also had guests at our home becoming part of our radio show on that particular day.
The most important outcome of the 2m Apart Live Streams is that it has helped my wife and I to remain distracted from the reality that soon awaits us when the whole health crisis eventually comes to an end. It has been the reason we have managed to keep our spirits high. Even on days when I have woken, feeling very low, the show has enabled me to share my thoughts with my listeners, and together we have kept us distracted for reality and to all feel better to face another day.
If it wasn’t for the growing financial pressures in our daily life, our only desire would be that this lockdown period would never end.
