EPIC NURSE STORY ⚠ Nurses fill in for family during chemo treatments ⭐

After Wendy Goodine was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, she moved in with her mother and stepfather to receive treatment at the Levine Cancer Institute in Albemarle, North Carolina.

When she arrived at her first appointment, Goodine was nervous, frightened, and understandably, emotional. Due to the coronavirus, she is not allowed to bring anyone with her to her weekly chemo sessions.

Filling in for her family, the nurses provide an understanding ear and continuous support throughout her sessions. When Goodine couldn’t leave her home, RN social worker, Heather Keith, delivered three boxes of food to her every week.

Goodine considers these caring nurses her heroes.

EPIC NURSE STORY ⚠ School nurse provides masks for the community ⭐

The past pandemic closed schools but didn’t keep elementary school nurse Amber Mehrkens from helping others. She continued to check the temperatures of the childcare students at the school and those of the teachers preparing for distance learning.

When she wasn’t in her office, she was home caring for her four children in Mazeppa, Minnesota. During pockets of spare time, Mehrkens began sewing. She created a few hundred masks with the fabric she had on hand, then placed them on her porch for her neighbors to take at no charge.

She quickly depleted her supply of fabric and other supplies. After she and a few friends spent several hundred dollars at a craft store, they asked for donations to cover their costs.

With help from her children and a few friends, Mehrkens has sewn over 4,000 masks and provided them to the local fire department and area businesses.

This year has been full of surprises and unplanned circumstances but through it all I’ve learned to be 10x more grateful for what I have, cherish and unconditionally love those around me and to keep moving forward no matter what. I feel blessed to celebrate another year of life.

What’s it like giving birth during a pandemic? This picture captures the joy, sadness and relief I felt giving birth.

I agreed to being induced at 39 weeks since I was delivering at the peak of the pandemic in N.J. When we arrived our temperatures were checked. To my shock and dismay, my husband's temperature was 100.00. That made him suspected to have Covid and he could not be at the birth. They did not give him an actual Covid test nor did they allow his temperature to get rechecked. An hour later he checked his temperature at an urgent care and it was 99.4 and got tested for Covid and the next day we found out he was negative. If the hospital would have checked him with an actual Covid test he wouldn't have missed Rosalia's birth.

I was so shocked and heartbroken that he wasn't there because we had been so careful. I couldn't stop crying all Wednesday and Thursday morning. I was so emotional and upset that of course labor was difficult, painful and without a doubt the hardest labor out of all three. After giving birth I was not well, I was dizzy and sedated from the medication given to me during labor. I could barely speak or stand up when again the nurses tried to separate my family again and told me they would be keeping the baby away from me. Their reasoning was that because my husband was a suspected Covid person. It didn't make sense and it made me even more upset. I'm not sure how I managed the strength and will to tell them I would not allow it. After a few hours they brought her back to me. I was physically and emotionally exhausted.
I wanted to go home to my family so badly but the stay at the hospital was long because the baby had jaundice. Kevin finally met his daughter outside the hospital when he came to pick us up. He was so emotional that we waited in the car before bringing her inside to meet her brother and sister.
I learned that I am one strong mama and I will always fight for my kids but I also that to heal you have to be open about these painful experiences. This was very difficult for me to share. I just hope to move on. .

At Nyack Hospital, every time a patient is taken off a ventilator lab staff celebrates with a quick dance and by playing “Here Comes The Sun ☀️ ” by the Beatles.
This signifies a patient being able to breathe on their own and on the road to recovery from the coronavirus.
It is truly remarkable the work hospital staffs are performing during this pandemic. Special thanks to Diana Paredes for sharing with us!
