There are thousands of British Columbians who are homeless, mentally ill and addicted. It is generally agreed that this is the tragic legacy of the closure of Riverview Hospital, a provincial institution for those with mental illness, without properly funded housing and supports to replace it.

The phase-out began four decades ago, and it finally closed in 2012. But it’s over those decades that people have been falling through the cracks and dying of neglect.

Violence and chaos on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has increased, with those problems migrating to other parts of the city.

Sgt. Steve Addison said Vancouver police allege Singh was badly beaten in her home near Queen Elizabeth Park — about six kilometres from the homeless camp — by two men who gained entry by posing as police. She was found several hours later and taken to hospital with grave injuries, but died Tuesday.

Police said 41-year-old Pascal Bouthilette has been charged with second-degree murder and 47-year-old Sandy Parisian is accused of manslaughter. Bouthilette was arrested Tuesday evening near Main Street and Terminal Avenue, where he lived in a trailer. Parisian, who lived in a tent at the homeless camp, was arrested near Strathcona Park.

VANCOUVER -- A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a fatal stabbing at a single-room occupancy hotel in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood Sunday morning.

Vancouver police said in a news release that they were called to the Gastown Hotel around 5:30 a.m. and discovered two people who had been stabbed.

One of the victims, a 40-year-old from Vancouver, died at the scene. The second victim, a 28-year-old also from Vancouver, was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

They were asked what help they needed or wanted. Their lists included food, dental care, bank accounts, addictions treatment, counselling and, yes, friends.

Housing First was never just roofs over heads, Somers said. Just as he insists that the other big idea embedded in the trial — distilled to the catchphrase harm reduction — was always intended to be more than needle exchanges, supervised consumption sites and substituting pharmaceuticals for street drugs.

VANCOUVER -- For six months now, employees at a dental office and a barber shop in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood have had to clean spit off their storefronts.

“I’d show up on a Sunday morning, and there would be big glob down my window,” said Denzil Wood, owner of Kitsilano Barbers.

Every two weeks, someone spat on their shop doors and windows, and now the incidents have been reported to Vancouver police.

The statistics are based off findings from a 2021 report by Rentals.ca, the National Rent Report and Bullpen Research & Consulting.

The reports shows that Vancouver ‘s average monthly rent for a one-bedroom was $1,855 in December, while Toronto’s was $1,832.

On Jan. 9 a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officer was on a bike patrol when he tried to stop a man carrying a long metal saw from jaywalking across an intersection at Dunsmuir and Richards streets.

"When he asked the man to stop, the man responded by punching the officer in the face with a closed fist," write the VPD in a statement

While there was a scuffle, the man wasn't able to use the saw as a weapon and the officer was able to call for backup.

The unholy trinity of homelessness, addiction and untreated mental illness on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has created a humanitarian crisis.

But it also poses an economic and existential threat, with vandalism, graffiti, break-ins, open drug use and overdoses pushing it to a tipping point.

The unholy trinity of homelessness, overdose deaths and untreated mental health puts Vancouver's liveability and viability at risk.

VANCOUVER (CityNews) — The Vancouver Police low-level crime task force has seized a sizeable haul of weapons and has also conducted numerous outreach checks in just a few weeks.

Some of the 210 weapons taken off the streets of downtown Vancouver in the past month and a half include tasers, bear spray and replica handguns.

Const. Tania Visintin explains an increase in street disorder reports prompted the VPD to create the Neighbourhood Response Team last month.

The City of Vancouver approved Tuesday an operating budget of $1.6 billion for 2021, which includes a five per cent property tax hike.

Council had been asked to consider hikes of three per cent, 4.3 per cent and five per cent. The lower increases would mean fewer city services and projects, and the lowest would mean layoffs, those behind the report suggested.

Councillors opted for the highest hike, which will account for a half per cent property tax change going from non-residential to residential buildings.

Mobility pricing for the Metro Core area is deemed as one of the “game changer” strategies outlined by City of Vancouver staff’s Climate Emergency Action Plan (CEAP), which will be presented to city council in a meeting on November 3.

City staff want to charge vehicles entering the region’s Metro Core — the geographical area that contains downtown Vancouver peninsula and Central Broadway — with a user fee to reduce carbon emissions, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the use of public space.

VANCOUVER -- A third-party commissioner has already found a Vancouver city councillor breached the city’s Code of Conduct and recommended that he step down, and now, a group of citizens is taking the councillor to court to make sure that happens.

Michael Redmond first filed a complaint that Coun. Michael Wiebe was in a conflict of interest when he voted on May 13 and 27 in favour of an outdoor patio program for restaurants, bars and breweries.

VANCOUVER -- After considering three options for possible tax hikes next year, city staff are recommending Vancouver property owners pay five per cent more next year.

The highest option – which council will be voting on – would involve deferring some capital projects, but will allow more of the council's priorities to be met.
