Grandad was in Hong Kong searching for an unusual gift. He found a strange old trunk of endless song. August, 1983. He was searching out a gift for my birthday.

My Grandad was at a dusty little oddities shop in Hong Kong. The old shopkeeper dug through his wares. He wore deep wrinkles and ragged clothes. He holds up a basketball, his grin showing a motley crew of rotting teeth. "No, he's not really the sporting type..." He puts away the basketball and holds up a Sony Walkman. "No, I want something unusual. Something he can't get at home. Something differe

nt." The old man gets up, walks to the shop door and locks it. He grabs my Grandad's arm and looks into his eyes. "I can offer you something very different. Something very unusual." He draws back a curtain, motioning for Grandad to follow. Grandad was skeptical. "Come. Take a look... You won't be disappointed." He follows the man up a narrow, dark set of stairs. At the top, they enter a room. The old man turns on a dim bulb hanging from the ceiling and pulls an old trunk from the corner. A low pitched hum echoes from inside the trunk. The old man rests the trunk on a stack of crates. He claps his hands and the top opens up. Grandad looks inside then pulls back, unimpressed. "It's just ... papers. Papers with nothing on them." Grandad says. "No. Not just papers with nothing on them. Papers with nothing on them YET. Inside this trunk is EVERY SONG NEVER WRITTEN. Every melody not realized since time began... Infinite hits." "I'll take it." That was 40 years ago. It's since given me thousands of songs. I would often ask Grandad what he paid for it. He would usually mumble something about owing someone a favor one day. I'm sure it's nothing I need to worry about. We offer all musical creative writing services.

THE LEGEND

"No, he's not really the sporting type..."

He puts away the basketball and holds up a Sony Walkman.

"No, I want something unusual. Something he can't get at home. Something different."

The old man gets up, walks to the shop door and locks it. He grabs my Grandad's arm and looks into his eyes.
