Keeping it on a literary note we are featuring two NAACP award winners from this past weekend! These are two reads that have been added to our collection and hopefully to yours as well. Congrats to Tracey M. Lewis-Giggetts & on your win!

Here’s a quick synopsis of the two books ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Take my hand: Inspired by true events that rocked the nation, a searing and compassionate new novel about a Black nurse in post-segregation Alabama who blows the whistle on a terrible injustice done to her patients. It shines a bright light on reproductive and healthcare injustices that black women, particularly those of low socioeconomic backgrounds, have and continue to face.

Black Joy: With this book, Tracey aims to gift her community with a collection of lyrical essays about the way joy has evolved, even in the midst of trauma, in her own life. Detailing these instances of joy in the context of Black culture allows us to recognize the power of Black joy as a resource to draw upon, and to challenge the one-note narratives of Black life as solely comprised of trauma and hardship.

Dr. Maya Angelou is an epitome of perseverance. She grew up around Jim Crow and also faced sexual assumptions. Despite all of the trials she went through she was determined to be heard and heard she was. She went on to become one of the best poets of our time. Her words are not just filled with pain, but they consist of love, endurance, sadness, vulnerability, and a plethora of other emotions. Why know her? She set the way for black openess. In a time of “family business is family business” she aired out the problem and sought her healing. May her example continue to push each of us of our generation to admit problems and seek help.

An excerpt from her book “ You gotta live, make your own goals”.

Jenifer Lewis is one of Hollywood’s most familiar faces, with more than 300 appearances in film and television. I picture Jenifer Lewis as the auntie that doesn’t mess around but is also a good time. Also with being a fabulous actress and activist she’s a social media sensation. Jenifer Lewis has had a wide-ranging and varied career in music and theater.Jenifer has presented more than 200 concerts, performing in 48 states and five continents.

In her book she lays everything out! You will laugh, shed a couple of tears and have numerous takeaways from reading her book. She’s doesn’t sugarcoat anything! She reveals that she finally acquiesced to getting therapy and it was there she found a name for what ailed her—she was bipolar. I love how she outlines her process of healing, a process that was far from perfect. I admire her for having the courage to face her demons and to not give up. Jenifer wrote this book in hopes to help others who suffer from depression. This book helped me to see there is a brighter side when going through a tough situation. It’s okay to be patient with yourself and allow yourself to heal. Seeking help is okay and it’s doesn’t matter at what age you try. When I read her memoir, I felt like I knew her personally and didn’t just see her as a character on a tv screen. I like how honest and brave she was in telling her story; good and bad. This book is a true inspiration!

Michelle Obama aka Chel Bae. This lady embodies the term “strong black woman”. Her book is a rollercoaster of emotions. She starts off by tell us about her humble beginnings and the functionality of her family. As her narrative progresses Mrs. Obama not only tells us about her wins but also her losses. She talks about all of the trials she went through to get to where she wanted to be in life. She does spend a considerable amount of time talking about the scrutiny that she faced as the FIRST black FIRST LADY of these United States of America. The fact that she was able to withstand and tolerate the media and yt people constantly demonizing her family, calling her a monkey, and still love with grace is just BEAUTIFUL. I think every black teenager should be required to read “Becoming: Michelle Obama” in school. This book is not controversial but rather an embodiment of grit and determination. Thank you for such a great book, thank you for aspiring young black girls to do better, and thank you for you 8 years of service for a job many did not appreciate you being apart of. We read, we appreciate, and we respect you  Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama!

Black authors are critical in literacy! I remember as a kid reading all of these ebooks by white authors that depicted people who looked like me as slaves, servants, and always looking for hope in places it did not exist. Black authors definitely have changed that narrative. This week we will talk about our favorite pieces of black literature. The 1st goes to the phenomenal Toni Morrison. This lady is one of the greatest authors of our time. A few of the reasons why I love her pieces of work is because all of her main characters are black. In a workd where you are told “you can’t be exclusive in a story” she proved differently. She is a world renowned authoress and most of her books have become film or tv shows. One of my favorites by her is “Tar Baby”. This book is about two people from totally different classes trying to make a new life in America but find challenging situations due to their background and pigmentation. It shows how life and race relations in the Caribbean are totally different here in America. If you haven’t had a chance definitely check this book out!

WE LOVE YOU MAWMAW’s. Grandmothers in the black family circle are crucial; they love us beyond measures, they accept us for who we are, they promote us to achieve our dreams, they discipline us in a stern loving way, and they cook like no one who’s ever cooked before. Today’s person you should know is Clementine Hunter. She created beautiful art to show us the beauty in our grandmas.

The thing about our grandma’s though is that they grew up in a different time than us. They faced adversities that we did not have to go through. They experienced working hard and getting nothing in return, possible abusive relationships, having children early and having to grow up early, jim crow and racism, being constantly limited, not being able to see beyond the lights, or held back. But they saw beyond that and they still chose to love us.

Sometimes we take for granted what they have given us. We take advantage of their kindnesses, and we often don’t appreciate them or show them their worth until they die and we’re at the funeral acting a fool because we know mo one else will lov eus like them. So today we am giving our mawmaw’s along with all the other mawmaw’s out there a BIG THANK YOU. Thank you for loving us and helping raise us to be the proud, unapologetic, BLACK woman/man that we are. Even though we at times see some of you being taken advantage of for many, many years by those who are supposed to equally love you, we understand the why. It’s your pure love.

The 1st day of Black History Month is dedicated to Tyre Nichols.

I am sorry that the precious gift of life was stolen from you and you weren’t able to accomplish the dreams you envisioned in you mind and heart for your future; I apologize that life is much harder on us simply because we are black. I hate that this is an ongoing issue that seems to be justified through a majority of white eyes but even more sorry that it happened to you through negro lies. This month is all about reflecting on the purity, the excellence, & the resilience of African-American people who turned a destiny of misery into creative prosperity.

We can’t reflect on that without thinking of the hard consequences they all had to face. So Tyre, MLK, Tamir, Harriett, Ronell, Nathaniel, George, and all others: WE SAW YOU, WE HEARD YOUR CRIES, WE SAW THE PAIN OF YOUR FAMILIES, AND WE GRIEVED TOGETHER.

The goal now isn’t to win, we’ve won. We are hated for not being allergic to the sun, we are hated for easily being #1 instead of swimming in mediocrity, we are crucified for being bodacious, we are dehumanized for being passionate.. WE HAVE WON. the goal is to love and rise above the hate and jealousy.

LOVE ENDURES ALL THINGS.

Wednesday may be the day you just see as another ‘work day’ and you’re ready for it to be over. WHATEVER THE REASON, we want to change the way you see this day of the week and make it a so we can feel more fulfilled during the week!
🏆
🏆
🏆
💯 One way we can improve our Wednesday is by squeezing in an activity that will give you time to meditate. This should be something that will not overwhelm your day. Try a 15-30 minute meditation walk. This walk is to help clear your mind of the stressful things in our minds, that we know we can’t change, and focus on the things we can accomplish. You can do this while listening to a song (discover a new genre of music), listening to a great PODCAST ( — link in bio! 😉) or something else. Whatever you do, create a sanctuary for you mind, so you can retreat to it when you’re able. Wednesday will no longer be a long day, rather it will serve as purposeful day in your life. The time when you generate your brilliant ideas. Set goals for your passion(s) and give yourself time to UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS!!!Hope you all have a great ‼️ .
