City Leaders Announce Summer Programming and Violence Intervention Efforts

Today, City leaders shared strategies to proactively address gun violence in Cincinnati this summer, specifically among the youth population. The holistic approach includes additional summer programming through City departments, engaging youth in problem-solving, and providing additional education and resources around safe gun storage. All of this information is captured in one, easy-to-navigate page on the City’s website called “Summer in Cincy” (cincinnati-oh.gov/summerincincy). Community members will also find resources like summer food locations, emergency shelter options, rent and utility relief, and mental health resources.

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) is pleased to announce Rec at Night, programming specifically designed to target our teens during summer weekends. These activities are in addition to the many services provided by CRC, including day camps, sports leagues, and normal operating pool hours. The Hirsch and Lincoln Rec Centers will be open every Saturday, beginning June 8, from 3–11 p.m. with teen-specific programming and themed nights to offer fun, safe entertainment for young people.

The Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) will host “Safe Gun Storage Week” June 9–15. This is a new initiative to ensure no firearm ends up in the wrong hands. CPD will partner with the WhitneyStrong Organization to provide additional opportunities for community members to pick up gun locks. Gun locks are currently provided for free at all district headquarters to promote responsible gun ownership.

17/05/2024

The Cincinnati Police Memorial Ceremony will begin at Fountain Square at 11:00 am on Friday, May 17th. Afterwards a parade will follow to the Cincinnati Police Memorial in front of District One headquarters.

Local law enforcement members and their families will be honored with a flyover and a 21 gun salute.
