Publicly declaring that I was turning 34 was at first difficult for me. Why?

Because of so many reasons but a few are…

As a woman the older you get the less desirable people perceive you to be. And then comes the whole respectability culture of people that have been free with you suddenly calling you aunty or Ma. I hate it so much!

People will want to equate your age with achievements. “So you are 34, what have you achieved in your life?” As if they are God's personal assistant appointed to keep record of your life.

Yet it doesn't end there…

When some people throw insults at you they start with age shaming you…”Look at this old cargo”

When you dress young (whatever that means🙄) they shame you to “dress your age.”

Some will first ask you “how old are you?” Before they decide whether to respect you or not.

Unfortunately this has had adverse effects on people behaviour (especially women)making them feel uncomfortable disclosing their age. Some either reduce it to gain favors or increase it for respect.

And there is also the pressure of wanting to have achieved certain things at a particular age that it seems as if you are not doing well if you haven't achieved those things at a certain age.

Me: The power of age shaming has lost its hold on me! Thank God and thanks to self awareness- and the knowing that age is just a number and shouldn't be a measure for success.
