Very inspiring presentation by Almaz Negash of the African Diaspora Network network on Diaspora Social Responsibility.

Highlights:
1. It's important for us (in the home country) to understand the needs of the diaspora & their investment decisions. Not just provide what we think they need.
2. Diaspora want a return on investment and the social return on investment (impact on the community).
3. Trust is important. The Diaspora need to trust the person & institution that's asking them to invest.
4. The government needs to create an enabling ecosystem for the diaspora to invest & be innovative with investment products & solutions.
5. Diaspora investments in Africa will go further if we work with and learn from other communities e.g. the Indian Diaspora.
6. We (in Africa) have a long way to go in boosting diaspora investments in the region. We need to be bold and think bigger.

I couldn't agree more.

I'm privileged to be in a place of influence as a former diaspora in the USA and now a Diaspora Banker in Kenya. I accept the challenge Almaz Negash. Thank you for challenging us to think bigger and be bold.

The Global Forum for Remittances, Investment and Development (GFRID) 2023

Today's conversations on remittances focused on:

1. Empowering remittance families
• To make migration a choice & not a necessity for those who rely on remittances
• To enable the recipients to live better lives (good healthcare, quality education, etc)

2. Partnership with stakeholders
• To promote channels that reduce costs and extend reach
• To gather data that will help to find effective solutions for improving remittances into the region

3. Leveling the playing field by improving regulatory framework to bridge the digital divide & enable competition in the remittance market

4. Working with the diaspora (in addition to their financial contributions):
• Through knowledge exchange platforms
• To encourage mentorship initiatives
• To share skills and resources
