It is widely recognizable that “Beethoven is the towering figure in the history of the sonata” (Miles Hoffman), and, in Sophia Gorlin, a famous piano teacher's opinion, his piano sonata No. 17 in D minor, op. 31, No. 2 (hereinafter defined as the Tempest Sonata), composed in 1802, can be considered the “towering” work in the history of the sonata form. In Early 1957, Zubin Mehta made his performance debut, conducting Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet with the Tonkunstler Orchestra. He prepare himself in the months before the Liverpool International Conducting Competition in 1958. In the competition he conducted Stravinsky's Peterushka very well but fell sharply in the ratings when he attempted to conduct his next pieces without a score and mistakenly confused a Schubert symphony of one by Mozart. Eventually he won the competition with his assertive performance of Beethoven's Symphony No.5. It remains a fascinating coincidence that the first Indian musician to became world famous in Western classical music. Celebrated pianist Gleen Gould was born in Toronto and lived here at 32 Southwood Drive throughout his childhood. His visionary approach to musical interpretation brought him international stature. A child prodigy, he gave his first public concert on the organ at the Eaton Auditorium 12 December 1945. He made his debut as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at age 14. Orfeo ed Euridice by Franz Josef Haydn, is not as famous as the same title comproserd by Gluck, but it is considered to be his finest opera. The Opera was completed in 1791 for a performance in London but it was never produced. The opera's first stage presentation took place 1951 at the Florence May Festival, Erich Kleiber conducted. Richard Bonynge made this recording in 1957 for Private Record now issue in Beeping Classics BGO 001.
