A reminder of what is happening on Friday night!

10/11/2023

It's Friday and, you know what that means? New band announcement time!

So this week we're pleased to welcome GypsyJack as a part of this whole thing! You might have seen them around before, but if not keep a look out for more shows next year and a new record too.

Here's what they say of themselves:

We are Gypsy Jack! The hottest new band from Birmingham. A snarling sound of hard rock and sleaze oozing with melancholic melody and decadent attitude! Notorious for the biggest stage presence; making grassroots venues feel like a stadium. Message us here or email [email protected]

03/11/2023

You might have noticed that both this week and last week, a new act has not been announced. Simply put, everyone has said they want to hold back for one reason or another!

We should be back in the swing of things next week, announcing a band who are playing a headliner in Birmingham tomorrow night and want the pictures from that show as promotional pictures!

Following that, we also have a band who are finishing up a new record and, with that, wish to revamp their online presence ready to move forward with what comes next.

We also have a band who has kind of been informally announced already, but also lacks a name...

And in addition to those, there are at least a couple more to come, so wait until next week to see who else we're bringing along for the ride!

For a reminder so far, our announced line up is:
Kieran Bott Music/Pasalacqua
Basement Orphans
Abhey Aneja

It's Friday so that means a new announcement!

We're pleased to introduce the next artist who is a part of Mellow Raccoon, our good friend Abhey Aneja!

Abhey describes himself as "a singer/songwriter from India performing Soft Rock music covers and originals all around the world. His new Single, Mirror, will be available 30th november on Spotify and Youtube. More songs coming up end of year."

Abhey has been based in the West Midlands for the past couple of years so you might well have seen him around. If not, hopefully you'll look out for him now!

Our very own Basement Orphans rocking out in Stafford last Friday!

After hitting Brighton on 20th October, they will be back in Birmingham at the Sunflower Lounge on 30th October! Tickets are on sale now!

Due to a show yesterday, this week's announcement is a day late! But it's time to announce the second band that is a par...

For the next few weeks, every Friday one of the label acts will be announced, starting with the rather obvious one - and for the more observant amongst us - the one who released a single with the Mellow Raccoon logo on 10 months before the label was officially founded - the label founder Kieran Bott Music/Pasalacqua (me, myself).

It'll keep it short because it's weird trying to big up myself or whatever. But yeah, I'm sure you already know me, but if not I'm a multi-instrumentalist who makes records by myself, playing guitar, bass, drums, singing, occasionally adding other instruments, then taking care of all production and mixing and mastering too. I sometimes play solo shows, sometimes I get Pasalacqua going, a two-piece group where I play a heavily modified guitar that covers guitar and bass, while singing and someone else plays drums.

I enjoy Alternative Rock, make records that sound like the kind of thing I'd listen to if I wasn't responsible for them and I love working with the surrounding musical community to build everyone else up.

A new record should be out in the coming months, a full LP. For now my latest release is the Interplanetary/Nightlight double A-side which can be found on my Bandcamp page kieranbott.bandcamp.com

Ok, here we go!

Today, I'm pleased to announce the launch of Mellow Raccoon!

Mellow Raccoon is a new platform for the local music scene. Part Independent Label, part so much more; but all about making the music happen.

Founded by Kieran Bott, a lifelong Alternative Rock musician and PhD Researcher in the field of the political workings and political engagements of Alternative Rock scenes from Punk onwards, the combination of those two worlds afforded an understanding of both the frustrations and missing pieces of our present musical climate and of the forgotten lessons of noted music scenes that made lasting impacts still affecting the world today. Naturally, combining the questions and problems with the solutions and answers seemed like a logical next step. Taking influence from the likes of Dischord Records, adding one of my favourite animals, making a quick drawing and deciding that he looked "mellow"... here we are!

In a society with very few independent venues, independent record shops, independent labels, independent radio stations - the places that traditionally fuelled Alternative Rock movements, gave us shows, helped us build audiences, helped us record and helped us grow. Without the large student "art school" crowds publishing zines, designing and making posters, artwork, merch, giving us secret, dubious, access to facilities their colleges and universities had that made building scenes and networking around them, self-promotion and merch so much easier. The odds are against us today.

At the same time, since those years have gone by, recording gear, high-quality printing equipment, the means to make a record and to make merch have become significantly cheaper. The internet has made networking and socialising easier, if not by contacting your local area, by making your potential audience the entire world.

Furthermore, the difference an active musical base can make to wider society, giving people a much larger voice, is something everyone is missing today. The Rock Against Racism, the Rock for Choice, the Rock Against R**e movements were all fuelled by local music scenes and all made a fundamental difference to society, propelling large numbers of people into activism that got the messages across, built even closer music scenes and made the world a little bit better every time.

Taking the attitudes, sentiment, and most importantly the lessons from previous scenes - from Punk Scenes, the Seattle Scene, Riot Grrrl - these ideas need to be applied to the present society. Our local scene is definitely the friendliest, one of the most talented and supportive, so let's see where this takes us! In the words of the very much missed bassist of the Screaming Trees, Van Conner, in a conversation we had about how the Seattle Scene became what it did, "Seattle happened because we were all friends. We all helped each other every second."

We won't be the next Seattle and this label won't make any of us big stars. But it will definitely give us records, it will give us merch, it will give us much more power and it'll actually give us a fighting chance to move forward as musicians. Working together instead of alone will give us many, many more opportunities.

So yeah, welcome along on this journey! Keep a look out in following weeks as our launch line up will be announced, as label events, shows and compilations are announced. It'll be great for you to be a part of the ride!
