• It is often heard and repeated in various Christian spaces (predominately in more charismatic, Pentecostal, Word of Faith, and non-denominational. This is not to say that all in these spaces are secluded to this objection, but that it is more prevalent among those that adhere to these doctrines and theologies) “name it and claim it” or “speak-it into existence.” Both, and more of these common sayings, should not be attributed to Kenneth Hagin Sr (dad Hagin as referred to by many in the Word of Faith churches) but rather to the founder of the movement, E. W. Kenyon who was largely influenced by the metaphysical cults (i.e. Christian Science, New Thought, Unity School of Christianity, and Science of the Mind) and taught such teachings as “positive confession,” “positive mental attitude” (pma), and Sense Knowledge vs. Spiritual Knowledge.
• In all regards, the common monikers: “name it and claim it,” “manifesting/manifest/manifestation,” and “speak-it into existence” are all derivates of E. W. Kenyon’s “What I confess, I possess.” As D. R. McConnell defines in his book: “A Different Gospel” confession in the Word of Faith (WOF) is “affirming something we believe. . . testifying to something we know. . . witnessing for a truth that we have embraced.”
• Consequently, metaphysical cults (plus other ancient and current occult groups) taught, and are currently, teaching the same confession. Charles Fillmore (founder of the Unity School of Christianity) says: “What we think, we usually express in words; and our words bring about in our life and affairs whatever we put into them.” A once prominent teacher in the New Thought movement (founder?), Ralph Waldo Trine echoes the sentiments of Fillmore when he would teach that “a man’s state of mind - what he believes and confesses - will eventually produce a corresponding reality, whether good or bad.”
• God’s Sovereignty: Scripture repeatedly emphasizes “the absolute sovereignty of God’s will (Ps. 115:3; Eph. 1:4, 11;Acts 4:27-28; Job 42:2; Isaiah 45:7-9; Col. 1:16-17). God is not bound by any formulas nor what YOU confess. His reign is an autocracy (e.g. Dan. 4:34-35; Eph. 1:11).
