i am back to quickly share some thoughts over at Not Too Q***r

first, i am deeply grieved by the news out of Michigan State. the tragedy is devastating by itself, and the impact on mental health in the community only worsens the reality of living where we live

the news came as i was grieving the murder of Brianna G**y, a fellow trans women in the community over in England

if you are at all able to donate to her gofundme, here is the link

https://gofund.me/25376b57

i will continue to grieve the loss in both communities, and hope you can do so healthily as well

best wishes and much love,

Bug

TW // Su***de

My name is Gavin Rector-Brooks, and I run the podcast Not Too Q***r. I am in need of new artwork, a sound designer, a cassette deck, and funds in order to pay for these services.
I am a person defined by my q***rness and mental health struggles. Months ago, I found that my q***r community, locally and nationally, lacked a sense of connection that could only be filled with storytelling. That’s where Not Too Q***r comes in–a communal platform to tell q***r stories. The podcast launched in September 2022 with the overarching goal of discovering how community affects q***rness, and how q***rness affects community.
Since then, the podcast co-host has left the project, and requested all previous work be taken down. I also struggled with various mental health issues in the following months, leading to a su***de attempt on January 10th.
Following the attempt, I decided to relaunch the podcast. The first episode is my story, my coming out. The recording of the episode takes place from Saturday, January 14th to Saturday, January 21st, and post-production work–including all artwork and sound design–done by the following Wednesday, January 25th.
That’s where you come in. I am in need of a new logo for the podcast, if you are a q***r artist, or know of one, I would love to speak to you. The next episode will also need original sound design work. If you are a q***r sound designer or know of one, I would love to talk. For creative purposes, the episode will feature a cassette deck with recording capabilities, if you would like to donate one, please reach out. Lastly, I would love to pay any artists for their work. I will be spending all the money I have to make this concept come to fruition, but do not have enough money to as much as the artists deserve to be paid. If you would like to help cover the costs, let me know.
Thank you all so much for your continued support. See you soon in your podcast feed.

Thank you all so much for the support again. We blew past our initial goal of $500. Upon further budgeting, we realized we need more money to launch the podcast than initially thought. As such, we're raising our goal to $1,500. For full transparency, so you can decide whether to donate or not, here is our budget, including what we have bought and what we need to buy. Thank you all so much again!

Our names are Myla Limbers and Gavin Rector-Brooks. A few months ago, an idea came to us. As q***r youth who lacked a community in an extremely conservative midwestern town, we realized we had to create a community for ourselves. We looked around us, and even as pride events were going on and alliance clubs were meeting, we felt extremely disconnected from the q***r community. We wondered why, and however much time we spent trying to come up with an answer, we always came back to one answer; we did not have any stories of q***r youth to connect to. Although q***r stories are already well-published, they mainly focused around those of older generations; those alive during such things as the stonewall riot, the AIDS epidemic, or the gay liberation movement. In contrast, stories surrounded by q***r youth are few and far between. The stories of what gen z q***r youth went through, for that matter even q***r millennials, are vastly different from those of older generations. As a result, q***r youth like us do not feel connected to the q***r community when consuming these stories.

We, along with others, do not feel connected to our community, a massive problem, all because we do not have q***r stories to connect to. The solution, however, is simple: tell the stories of q***r youth. What better way to share these stories than a podcast? That’s what Not Too Q***r sets out to do, connect those of us in the q***r community by providing a platform for q***r stories to be told. We accomplish this by answering our thesis statement: How does community affect q***rness, and how does q***rness affect community?

We need your help, however. Launching a podcast is expensive, we have to pay for everything from costly podcasting hosting websites, editing software, a laptop, and a microphone, along with so much more. We expect to have to pay over $2,000 for it all. Website and podcast hosting sites themselves cost $50 a month. We have low-paying jobs, and all of our money is going towards the podcast. However, it is still not enough. We would appreciate any money that you can give to help us launch, and hopefully expand the podcast as well. Have no doubt, we will spend any money we receive with the utmost respect and use it to vitally improve our podcast, and in turn, create a space where we can find a community we all connect to. We thank you extremely deeply for any money you donate.
