Our names are Myla Limbers and Gavin Rector-Brooks. A few months ago, an idea came to us. As q***r youth who lacked a community in an extremely conservative midwestern town, we realized we had to create a community for ourselves. We looked around us, and even as pride events were going on and alliance clubs were meeting, we felt extremely disconnected from the q***r community. We wondered why, and however much time we spent trying to come up with an answer, we always came back to one answer; we did not have any stories of q***r youth to connect to. Although q***r stories are already well-published, they mainly focused around those of older generations; those alive during such things as the stonewall riot, the AIDS epidemic, or the gay liberation movement. In contrast, stories surrounded by q***r youth are few and far between. The stories of what gen z q***r youth went through, for that matter even q***r millennials, are vastly different from those of older generations. As a result, q***r youth like us do not feel connected to the q***r community when consuming these stories.
We, along with others, do not feel connected to our community, a massive problem, all because we do not have q***r stories to connect to. The solution, however, is simple: tell the stories of q***r youth. What better way to share these stories than a podcast? That’s what Not Too Q***r sets out to do, connect those of us in the q***r community by providing a platform for q***r stories to be told. We accomplish this by answering our thesis statement: How does community affect q***rness, and how does q***rness affect community?
We need your help, however. Launching a podcast is expensive, we have to pay for everything from costly podcasting hosting websites, editing software, a laptop, and a microphone, along with so much more. We expect to have to pay over $2,000 for it all. Website and podcast hosting sites themselves cost $50 a month. We have low-paying jobs, and all of our money is going towards the podcast. However, it is still not enough. We would appreciate any money that you can give to help us launch, and hopefully expand the podcast as well. Have no doubt, we will spend any money we receive with the utmost respect and use it to vitally improve our podcast, and in turn, create a space where we can find a community we all connect to. We thank you extremely deeply for any money you donate.
