88 snakes, monitor lizards, others, found in passenger’s suitcase at airport

Live Samar cobras, Mangrove snakes and vipers, as well as dozens of monitor lizards and geckos, all numbering up to 88 stared officers in the face as they opened the traveller’s luggage after arresting him at the Vienna airport in Austria.

The Austrian man who was allegedly smuggling the reptiles from the Philippines, was stopped as he arrived via Doha on Sunday.

Austria’s Finance Ministry said during screening, the man admitted that the luggage contained poisonous snakes, and then officers decided to transfer the closed luggage to Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo, where experts opened it.

Many of the smaller animals were transported in nylon stockings.

The traveler said that he had planned to sell the reptiles at a fair in Germany.
He faces legal proceedings for alleged breach of Austria’s law regulation trade in protected species.

The zoo in Vienna as well as an Austrian reptile zoo agreed to take in the animals.

I’ll recover all looted funds in Oyo, Makinde vows
Recovered loot to be kept in special bank account

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has wooed banks’ executives to assist the government in ensuring that all looted funds in the state were recovered and used for the overall development of the state.

He also vowed to recovered every bit of looted funds in the state, while such recovered loot should be kept in a special bank account for the use of the state.

The governor made this revelation while playing host to the management of the Unity Bank Plc at Agodi governor’s office.

According to him, the account will be made open to everybody to avoid the recovered money being looted again.”

“We want to recover the money in a very transparent manner and for people to see what the present administration has done with the money recovered.

”People should know how money belonging to them is being spent. The state money seized from individuals by EFCC will be returned to the account,” he said.

Makinde had on assumption of office discovered N1.2 billion being state money seized from a certain government official.

He had since approached the EFCC to refund same to the state government; to support his administrative drive to reposition the alleged comatose education sector.

While assuring that the state’s account with the bank would be used to save the looted money recovered from ‘wrong hands and accounts’, the governor charged the bank to also hold the state accountable because the government should not compromise the trust reposed in it by the people.

He said that his administration was ready to foster a partnership with bankers, processors, agriculture and business experts to develop the state.

”Agriculture is one of the pillars that this administration rested on and that is the tool that is intended to be used to expand the economy, Making said.

He assured the bank management that the government would not discriminate against it because it was not among the first big banks but would give equal opportunity to all partners of the government.

Atiku, PDP deserve prosecution over fraudulent evidence before tribunal - Lai Mohamned

The minister said this in a statement issued on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, where he is leading Nigerian delegation at the ongoing 23rd General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, deserved to be prosecuted.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, deserved to be prosecuted for allegedly presenting fraudulent evidence before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

The minister said this in a statement issued on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, where he is leading Nigerian delegation at the ongoing 23rd General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The statement signed by Mr Segun Adeyemi, the Special Adviser to the minister, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

“Instead of casting aspersion on the judiciary with their poorly-framed reaction to the ruling of the Tribunal, the PDP and its candidate should be thanking their stars that they are not being prosecuted for coming to court with a fraudulently-obtained evidence.

“It is intriguing that a party that trumpets the rule of law at every turn will present, in open court, evidence it claimed to have obtained by hacking into a supposed INEC server.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed [Twitter]
“Don’t they realise this is a criminal act for which they are liable?

“Instead of threatening to head to the Supreme Court, driven more by ego than commonsense, they should be sorry for allowing desperation to overwhelm their sense of reasoning.

“Enough is enough,” the minister who is the Vice President (Africa), UNWTO said.

Mohammed said that Atiku and PDP should apologise to Nigerians for wilfully distracting President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration with a frivolous election petition, instead of appealing the Wednesday’s ruling of the tribunal.

He noted that while the PDP and its candidate reserve the right to pursue their petition to the highest level, “they would be better served by dropping their toga of desperation and realising that there is a limit to tomfoolery.

“Nigerians are tired of this orchestrated distraction, and will rather wish that the opposition, having lost at the polls and in court, will now join hands with the government to move Nigeria to the next level.

“This is more so that the judgement validating the re-election of President Buhari was unanimous that the petition lacked merit, that the petitioners failed to prove any of the grounds upon which their case was anchored and that President Buhari is eminently qualified to contest the poll,” he said.

The minister commended the tribunal for not only doing justice to the case but for explaining, in painstaking details that lasted hours, how it arrived at its judgment.

“We also thank Nigerians, who voted massively to re-elect President Buhari, for their continued support,” he said.

Nigerian returnees to receive N40,000 Airtime, 9GB Data

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said Nigerians returning from South Africa will receive sim cards with airtime worth N40,000 and 9GB of valid data for two months.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement through Gabriel Odu for Media Unit of the Commission, when she received the first batch of 187 Nigerians on-board an Air Peace Flight at the Murtala Muhammed Airport.

She also stated that returnees will receive transport stipend to convey them to their various destinations, as well as a soft loan from the Bank of Industry to support those interested in small trade and businesses.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa added that a program of reintegration will be put in place subsequently. Also officials of the Bank of Industry were on hand to brief them.

Commending the Management of Air Peace for the kind gesture, the Chairman Hon Dabiri-Erewa said a total of 187 Nigerians were evacuated, amongst whom over 30 were children.

About 317 were initially billed to return on the flight which experienced over 15 hours delay by the South African authorities.

The development follows a directive from President Muhammadu Buhari to evacuate Nigerians in South Africa willing to return home due to renewed xenophobic uprisings.

The president gave the order after receiving the report of the special envoy whom he dispatched to South Africa over xenophobic attacks.

The Nigerian Returnees with joy and excitement at the reception they received on their return home, all got up to render the National Anthem thanking President Buhari, the Chairman of Air Peace as well as the Consul General in South Africa and the High Commission in Pretoria for their efforts in ensuring a successful return home to Nigeria.

The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa therefore urged other Nigerians in South Africa to remain peaceful and good Ambassadors as the Federal Government is making firmer strategies for their safety and security in that country.

Meanwhile, arrangements for airlift of Second Batch of Nigerians from South Africa are underway.

The Oye-Ekiti Incident: My Story, by Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi (_Wife of the Ekiti State Governor)

Yesterday, September 10th 2019, there was a crisis at Oye town in Oye Local Government, Ekiti State, while I was on an empowerment and advocacy tour to engage with women across the State. The tour commenced on Monday September 9th, with visits to two local governments which were hugely successful and peaceful.

On September 10th, we were billed to visit three local governments – Moba, Ilejemeje and Oye.

The first two stops were just like the ones before – peaceful with no incident. While we were at Ilejemeje, we received a call from our advance security team that students of the Federal University of Oye (FUOYE) were protesting a lack of electricity in Oye town.

We were told that more information would be provided on the situation. Shortly after we received word that the students had dispersed and the coast was clear for my visit.

When my convoy got to the Oye-Isan junction, we were met by a convoy of excited Okada riders who led us into Oye town. We made a stop at the primary healthcare center along the road for me to present delivery kits to pregnant women.

There was no sign of any trouble. We proceeded to the venue of my town hall meeting at the civic center with women in Oye Local Government. The atmosphere was very peaceful, the women were singing and dancing and there was nothing to indicate that anything was amiss.

I stopped at the tent erected for the mobile health clinic in front of the civic center to greet the elderly patients who were being attended to, and I also went to greet the beneficiaries of the Food Bank for the ederly project (Ounje Arugbo), who were assembled under another tent. I then proceeded into the hall for the program.

Half-way through our event, there was a disturbance outside. The FUOYE students (and possibly infiltrated by local thugs) had re-grouped and were trying to get into the venue.

The security officers prevented this from happening. We finished our program, and by the time we got outside, we found that vehicles from my convoy and those of my guests that were parked outside the venue had been vandalised.

As we were driving out of Oye town, we encountered at least two road blocks that the students had mounted to prevent the movement of vehicles. I could see students/thugs throwing stones and large sticks at us as we drove by.

However, the casualties that were recorded did not take place while I was there. There are eye-witnesses, photographs and video footage to confirm this.

There are reports circulating that the crisis occurred because I refused to address the protesting students. This is totally false. I did not encounter any group of students when I got to Oye town.

They had dispersed before my arrival, and when they regrouped I was inside the venue. It is possible, as I stated earlier, that the group that came to the venue trying to gain access with sticks and stones in hand might have included local hoodlums, but there was no way of telling the difference.

I am scandalized and shocked beyond words to hear that I instructed security officers to shoot at students.

EFCC, FBI arrest 30-year-old Nigerian for $4m Internet fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, in collaboration with United States FBI, has arrested one John Ani Chukwuebuka for his alleged involvement in Business email compromise fraud.

The suspect, a 30-year-old graduate, was arrested on August 5, 2019, in the Jakande-Lekki Area of Lagos during a collaborative operation by the EFCC and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.

A Nissan car was recovered from the suspect at the point of his arrest.

The suspect will be arraigned in court soon.

Accept defeat, Ohanaeze tells Atiku, says Buhari’s victory shortest way for Igbo Presidency
…Congratulates Buhari

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has on Thursday advised the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 23, 2019 presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to accept defeat, noting that President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory is the shortest route for an Igbo Presidency come 2023.

The group through its President General, Mazi okechukwu Isiguzoro congratulated the victorious Buhari and asked Atiku to concede and accept defeat even though he has the constitutional rights to appeal the decision of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
:
“We accept this validation of President Buhari’s mandate as the shortest route to have an Igbo man succeed him as President in 2023.

"It’s historic that during the 2003 Presidential campaign when General Muhammadu Buhari was the flag bearer of ANPP with late Senator Chuba Okadigbo, Buhari came to Umuahia during the 2003 ANPP gubernatorial flag off campaign of Chief Enyinnaya Abaribe, and said, "I’m destined to be the man that will handover to an Igbo man as President”, 20 years later by 2023, the prophecy is sure to be accomplish".

“President Muhammadu Buhari should give massive projects and empowerment to the South East as a prompt response to some few Igbo detractors who erroneously see him as a tribalistic leader who hates Igbo.

“He should reward the South East with projects and we urge Igbo to work towards getting Nigeria President of Igbo stock in 2023 by being less critic of him.

“It’s time to genuinely build bridges ahead of 2023".

*TINUBU speaks on BUHARI’S Victory at the Tribunal.....*

"With the unanimous ruling of the Court of Appeal, dismissing the Presidential Election Petition of PDP candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku today (yesterday), the rule of law came to the defence of democracy by affirming the sovereign will of the people.

“Their will was expressed during the February 23 election when a vast, compelling majority of the electorate cast their ballots for President Buhari to serve a second term as Head of State and Commander-in- Chief of our beloved nation.
“Whatever partisan side one might take, all must agree that Thursday, was a bright day for the administration of justice. The Court of Appeal rendered a comprehensive judgment of extraordinary thoroughness, reason and breadth on the many issues presented in this important matter. The court did so in the open air and before the television cameras that gave eyes to the entire nation to watch this fine moment for the Nigerian judiciary. The court did its job by following the law of the land wherever it might lead.

“As a Nigerian, I was proud to see both sides of this dispute behave with utmost civility and decorum despite the weight of the matters at stake and the intensity of the legal arguments presented. It is in this spirit that we must always seek to resolve even our most stubborn differences that we may emerge a stronger yet more peaceful nation.

“Former Vice President Atiku and his legal team put forth some imaginative, if desperate, arguments as was their right. They fought vigorously for their positions and were allowed to do so without pressure and without fear. No one used the power of the state to intimidate them in court just as no one used the power of the state to intimidate them during the election. As the Court affirmed, the election was free and fair and the final result should stand.

“The PDP claimed that President Buhari was unqualified to run for office. To his credit, President Buhari took this assault against his character with customary grace. The court thoroughly vindicated him. Based on his education and the experiences gained through his fine career, the court determined the evidence presented by Atiku showed that the President was “eminently qualified” and had done nothing untoward in his election filings with INEC.

“Atiku also placed unfounded reliance on the assertion of the use of card readers to send election results to an imaginary server. The court found that the operative law did not provide for the alleged electronic transmission of polling booth results. Atiku could not present evidence that such transmissions ever took place. In fact, such transmissions were technologically unfeasible. Card readers were not meant for this task and the purported mystery server was but a phantom in the PDP’s mind.

“To their credit, Atiku’s team argued and pressed their case energetically; but in the end their claims were based on things that existed only in their minds. They were arguing what they wanted to have happened not what actually took place. The court, on the other hand, can only deal with facts at hand not the imaginings of the mind.

“Most importantly, the court found that the election was properly conducted and that President Buhari won by the wide margin counted and recorded by INEC. Atiku was given the chance to prove his case. In the end, he did not produce the requisite evidence. This failure was not from lack of trying; the failure was because such evidence simply does not exist. President Buhari won the election openly and honestly.

“I congratulate President Buhari for this resounding judicial vindication of his personal character and of his electoral victory. I know Mr. President as a magnanimous person who will reach out his hand in friendship to Atiku in the spirit of reconciliation, national tranquility and progress. We may disagree and argue as brothers but never as enemies who cannot resolve whatever difference that has come between us.

“The next step lies with Atiku. He can decide to continue with these claims or he can take the more prudent approach by accepting the express will of the people and placing his ample talents in the service of the nation in his private capacity.

“In the meantime, this day shall stand as a proud day for Nigeria, a day when the rule of law stood in full support of democratic elections and of the sovereignty of the Nigerian people to select the leaders of their choice”.

REMINISCENCE

Sola Aremu, Commander, SARS, Oyo State Command: Epitome of Diligence, Dedication (3)

Jubilation in Oyo town, as SARS arrest gangs of armed robbers.

By Bode Durojaiye.

Three notorious gangs of armed robbers that terrorized residents of Oyo town and its environs were today apprehended by men of the Oyo/Ogbomoso Annexe of the Special Anti-robbery Squad.

The notorious robbery kingpins whose age range between 21 and 33 years specialize in motorcycle sn**ching, cement stealing, house burglary, and goats stealing.

They dispossessed defenceless residents of their belongings at gun points, while many, in most cases have fallen to the bullets of men of the underworld.

For panic-stricken residents, going to bed at nights with their eyes closed remain impossible, as the fear of attacks by these criminals usually lead to burning the midnight oil.

However, as an adage says that “every day is for the thieves, but one day is for the owner”, the untiring efforts and selfless service of men of the anti-robbery squad came to limelight when the criminal gangs were rounded up at different locations, while embarking on their nefarious operations.

The first three-man gang robbed an unsuspecting middle-aged trader at a weekly village market near Oyo town of a sum of N60,000, and sn**ched away two motorcycles from their owners at gun points.

Leader of the gang, 23yearold Nuru Tesimiyu, told the NATION that nemesis caught up with him when he ordered his men to go away with the stolen items, while he stayed behind to sn**ch more motorcycles.

“My plan to sn**ch another motorcycle was unsuccessful, as the traders were suspicious of my movement. So, I decided to escape through the bush path. On getting out on the other side of the road, I saw a pick up van and begged the driver to take me to the town. He agreed, but while passing through the market he saw people lamenting on the stolen motorcycles. The driver came down, sympathize and discuss with the people, not knowing that they suspected my movement and alerted the police. That was how I was arrested.”

The second four-man robbery gang specialize in house burglary at Isale-Oyo, Sakutu-Ogbegbe, Saabo and Akesan areas. Scores of residents have been killed, while property running into millions of naira carted away.

According to the 30 year old gang leader, Segun, a.k.a “dey go”, they were caught while on robbery operation at Isale-Oyo area.
There was wild jubilation in the community as soon the gang was arrested, as thousands of residents were full of praises to God, and thanked SARS men for their efforts.

One of the residents, Semiu Alani, who bursted into tears when the gangs were being arrested told the NATION that “some of them have decided to relocate to Ibadan because of the terror unleashed on them by the criminal gang, who are always blood thirsty”.

The last three-man gang mastered in stealing large quantities of cement from dealers at midnight, and transport them to some designated uncompleted buildings, in readiness for unsuspecting customers to come and buy.

Nemesis caught up with them when they robbed a dealer of some tonnes of cement in the ancient town.

The NATION authoritatively learnt that the buyer found by the gang was dissatisfied with the consignment, and accordingly alerted men of SARS, who promptly swung into action and apprehended the criminals.

Speaking in an interview, the Officer-in-charge of SARS, Deputy Superintendent of Police Olusola Aremu, who disclosed that the suspected criminals would be charged to court after the completion of investigations, commended the people for their support and cooperation in crime prevention.
