Hight Court orders concerning the 'Sumila Ronghangpi' case

The upper caste control of Assamese media creates an Assamese identity that is inimical to the interests of Assam's tribal communities.

🙏🏼

CW: VIOLENCE

Progressive Igorots for Social Action is one with the concerned people of Northeast India in demanding justice for Sumila Ronghangpi, an indigenous Karbi girl who was allegedly tortured, impregnated, and burnt to death.

The victim’s employers were pointed as the perpetrators of the gruesome killing, but they have denied these despite evidences being presented by concerned organizations and individuals (who mentioned that the perpetrators have a record of sexual exploitation charges against the Karbi girl). The case is being silenced by the authorities.

We stand in solidarity with the call for an appropriate investigation and punishment to the culprits of such crime. We believe that this is a step forward in stopping this kind of violence.

JUSTICE FOR SUMILA RONGHANGPI!

Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), Network Of Indigenous Women In Asia - NIWA and Asia Indigenous Youth Platform - AIYP strongly condemn the gruesome killing of an Indigenous girl, Sumila Ronghangpi, in Assam, Northeast India. It defies human conscience to have murdered the innocent Indigenous girl who was allegedly tortured, impregnated, and burnt to death. She was just 12 years old, employed as domestic help at an affluent, high caste family of mainstream society at Nagaon district in the state of Assam, Northeast India. She comes from West Karbi Anglong district, Kudam Ronghang village, and belongs to the extremely poor Karbi Indigenous community.
