Tarbela Dam general manager Mohammad Azam Joya said on Thursday that the Wapda was going to implement its country’s first floating solar power project in Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha barrages that would help add 300 megwatts of low-cost electricity in the national distribution system.
He said this while speaking to participants of a workshop held here to discuss the social and environmental impacts of floating solar panel projects.
He said as per project implementation plan two projects each of 150MW capacity would be installed in Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha barrages with a cost of $325 million.
He said the projects would be completed in the next two years with the financial support of the World Bank and they would help add 300MW of renewable energy to the national power distribution system.
He hoped that the project would also help create new job opportunities for the locals who had given their land for the Tarbela Dam project during early 70s. He said that the floating panel energy project would also be helpful in arresting the current trend of outages in the country

International Airlines ( ) has acquired a state-of-the-art simulator for pilot training, refresher courses and air safety.
The simulator would lead to safer training and cost savings for the local airlines, as they have to spend a significant amount of money on training their pilots overseas.
The state-of-the-art digital 7E Evolution Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulator, acquired from L3Harris Technologies, will be installed at the PIA Training Centre in .
Currently, the national flag carrier operates 11 Airbus A320 aircraft. The simulator will not only benefit PIA’s own pilots who fly Airbus A320 but also other Pakistani airlines like Airblue and AirSial that use the aircraft. Pakistan has 670 Airbus A320 pilots.

The Executive Board of the National Highway Authority (NHA) has recommended the PC-I for the construction of the ( Economic Corridor ( Link) to the CENTRAL Development Working Party (CDWP)/ Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) for consideration.
The Board meeting was chaired by Capt. (Retd.) Muhammad Khurram Agha, Chairman, NHA. As per the official documents, the Board had an extensive discussion on the PC-I for the construction of Muzaffarabad – Mansehra (CPEC Link) having a length of 26.6 km. Afterward, the Board suggested the PC-I costing Rs 44.72 billion for consideration of CDWP/ECNEC

In an interview with Chinese Media, Hassan Duad Butt, CEO of KP-BoIT stated that eleven enterprises are establishing industrial units in the Rashakai Special Economic Zone.
He also said that the development of the Rashakai SEZ, which would be commercially launched on May 28, 2021, is on track. Century Steel, a Chinese-owned company that will be a state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facility, is one of the industrial units now under construction.
In addition, 11 businesses have been given 42 acres of land in the SEZ to build industrial units with an estimated investment of Rs11.826 billion and 2,500 job possibilities. In addition, he also said the SEZ will be built in three phases over the course of six to seven years. The zone’s electricity supply has likewise been divided into three phases
In Phase One, 10 Mw was provided in Sept 2020; in Phase Two, 160 Mw will be provided, and 90% of work has been completed and in Phase Three, 50 Mw will be provided.

Govt to wind up CPEC authority
Planning minister passes instructions to begin process of its abolishment
The new government has decided to abolish the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority amid disclosure that Chinese power producers have shut down 1,980 megawatts of production capacity due to non-clearance of their Rs300 billion dues.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has passed instructions to the concerned officials to begin the process for abolishing the authority.
We will move a summary seeking Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s approval to abolish the CPEC Authority, Iqbal confirmed to The Express Tribune. “It is a redundant organisation with a huge waste of resources which has thwarted speedy implementation of the CPEC”, said the minister.
The decision to wind up the CPEC Authority was in line with the Pakistan Muslim League-N’s old policy that was never in favour of establishing a parallel setup. Even the PTI government took over two years to set up the authority but it largely remained dormant as the last political dispensation was too not in favour of having another bureaucratic structure.
The last PTI government had reluctantly enacted the CPEC Authority Act in May 2021 but it never filled the chairman position after former chairman Asim Saleem Bajwa resigned.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday took his government’s first briefing on the state of CPEC affairs and the same officials who in the past used to defend CPEC progress told the new regime how things were bad on the ground.
It was revealed during the meeting that over 37% of the installed capacity of the CPEC power projects, or 1,980 megawatts, was out of order due to non-payment of dues to Chinese investors. The meeting was informed that total receivables of the 10 Chinese IPPs have shot up to Rs300 billion, out of which the overdue amount was Rs270 billion.
The three imported coal-fired power plants, Hubco, Sahiwal and Port Qasim have closed one of their two units due to non-availability of the fuel, a senior former official who was responsible for the CPEC told The Express Tribune on condition of anonymity.
He said that the matter had been brought to the knowledge of the then finance minister Shaukat Tarin but the ministry only made partial payment of Rs50 billion.
Similarly, the establishment of a revolving account was pending since the signing of CPEC Energy Projects Framework Agreement in 2014. A day before departure to China to seek a big bailout, the then government had announced to open the account but when a summary was presented before the Economic Coordination Committee for approval on April 1, 2022, Shaukat Tarin deferred the final approval, according to a briefing given to Ahsan Iqbal.
The CPEC projects were also facing delays due to change in taxation policies by the last government in violation of commitments given to China. The PTI government had last year withdrawn the sales tax exemption on imports.
The Supplementary Finance Bill 2021 had introduced 17% on imports, which affected all on-going CPEC IPPs like Azad Pattan, Kohala, Suki Kinari, Gwadar, TEL, ThalNova, Thar Coal Block-I) and, other non CPEC Chinese IPPs, the minister was informed.
These IPPs were exempted from the sales tax during the construction phase, through various power generation policies.
The planning minister on Wednesday showed displeasure over the “sluggish progress” on the CPEC projects.
“How pathetic the delay on CPEC projects which is the potential game changer for the regions, ‘’ said the minister while directing the officials concerned to hold a meeting to review the progress at fortnight.
He added that there was zero progress on industrial zones being set up at Port Qasim, Islamabad and Mirpur, terming the development “unfortunate”. “When you do not value your investors, why would they come for investment”, lamented the minister.
In 2017, the excitement around SEZs was so high that all major foreign direct investors were lining up to be a part of it. However, due to delay in projects Chinese investors moved away, said the minister.
The minister noted that further delay in projects will not be acceptable while directing the officials to ensure the expedition of the work.
The minister also directed all Joint Working Groups (JWGs) of CPEC to pursue their sector specific projects and initiate work on them immediately. The government is planning to hold the next JCC meeting in May.
As per initial CPEC plan, the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) were supposed to be ready by 2020 but unfortunately, in the last four years, there has been zero progress on SEZs, said the minister while adding that the Interior Division should ensure the fool proof security of the Chinese in Pakistan.
During the briefing, the minister directed the officials to complete Zhob-Quetta Road which was initiated under the CPEC project

A 25-km long patch of the realigned Karakoram Highway has been opened for light traffic in the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project vicinity.
According to information shared by WAPDA, the 25 kilometers long section of the newly constructed road will be opened for heavy traffic within two weeks.
The Karakoram Highway is being realigned and relocated in this part of Diamer district because the existing road will be submerged by the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project.
The realigned/relocated section of KKH lies between Shatial and Minar Nala.
WADPA says that the diversion of traffic at the main dam site to the new road will further accelerate construction activities.
Those traveling between Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad on the Karakoram Highway will now be able to travel without waiting at the dam site. After the resumption of traffic, tourists and locals coming to Gilgit-Baltistan will be able to continue their journey on the relocated KH without stopping at the dam site.
The carriageway of the highway was constructed at a cost of over Rs. 5.78 billion, is between 7.3 and 9.8 meters wide.
At present, construction work on eight sites on Diamer Bhasha Dam is in full swing. The height of the RCC dam, which is being constructed for water storage and access to cheap energy, is 272 meters. The dam has a total storage capacity of 8.1 million acre feet. The dam will generate 4,500 MW of affordable and environmentally friendly electricity, says the WAPDA communique.

آج بلوچستان کے وزیر اعلیٰ کا بھی کہنا تھا کہ ریکوڈک میں بہترین معاہدہ کرکے وسائل کا تحفظ کیا گیا ہے، ہم وزیراعظم اور آرمی چیف کے مشکور ہیں کہ انہوں نے ہماری تلخ باتوں کو برداشت کیا۔
یاد رہے کہ بیرک گولڈ کمپنی نے صرف وزیراعظم عمران خان اور آرمی چیف پر اعتماد کے باعث 11 ارب ڈالر کا جرمانہ معاف کر کے وہی 10 ارب ڈالر اب بلوچستان کے ریکوڈک منصوبے میں سرمایہ کاری کرنے کے لیے لگانے کی یقین دہانی کروادی ہے
اگر یہ 11 ارب ڈالر کا جرمانہ پاکستان پر لگ جاتا تو پاکستان مزید 20 سال پیچھے چلا جاتا شاید بینک کرپٹ ہوجاتا پر وطن کء رکھوالوں نے پاکستان کو اس ہزیمت اور بڑے نقصان سے بچا لیے اور اللّٰہ کا خاص کرم ہوا کہ اب وہی 10 ارب ڈالر بلوچستان پر خرچ کیے جائیں گے

Well, you all are about to multiply the frenzy and excitement by 10 because the holy month of Ramadan is happening twice in year 2030.
January 6th to February 4th, 2030 will be the first spell of Ramadan, followed by December 26th, 2030 to 24 January the second spell. Two Ramadan months in one years.
We'll tell you how! The reason for this unusual occurrence is that Islamic Calendar follows the lunar cycle (cycle of moon) not the Gregorian calendar (cycle of sun). A lunar year has 354 days, shorter than the 365 days of solar years.
It means lunar years appear to move back 11 days every years and with that phenomenon, in 2030 Ramadan will occur twice because of lunar cycle.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has handed out 100 contracts to junior cricketers between 13 and 19 years age bracket as part of the Junior Development Programme.
Barring a few players who are currently busy with their academic exams, most of these 100 players are watching the final at the HBL Pakistan Super League 7 final between Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Alongside the financial support, the PCB will be investing in these youngsters to develop their complete personality, including cricketing skills and providing education to them. With the contracts coming into effect the 100 contracted players will be earning monthly retainers of PKR 30,000 each.
Scholarships will be provided in top schools and college/universities. Technical education will also be provided besides comprehensive cricketing skill acquisition plan will also be followed by the youngsters.
