***MEDIA ALERT***
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DAVID GELB February 5, 2024 [email protected]
DAVID E Gelb whom is running for Congress in Ohio’s 8th District, announces his support for the Bipartisan Senate border bill
Yesterday, the US Senate released its bipartisan border deal and a much-needed foreign aid package. This bill would implement a strict limit on individuals attempting to enter the US southern border. It would severely curtail asylum seekers and just about anyone else trying to enter the US legally or illegally. This bill would be a significant change in the decades-old immigration laws and would be the first of its kind put together by a bipartisan coalition on immigration.
All that being said, after months and years of Republicans complaining about real change on the border and Republican members of Congress visiting and making a plea to the American people and President Biden to do something about the border, House Speaker Mike Johnson has declared the deal “dead on arrival.” Last time I checked, congress was responsible for legislation on immigration. Instead of trying to impeach Homeland Secretary Mayorkas for doing his job set by Congress, perhaps they should pass something of substance to help secure and fix immigration issues.
Instead of fixing immigration problems, the house members, which includes the likes of Warren Davison, like to scare Americans and Ohioans’ 8th District members. Instead of helping to cure the problem of people coming across the border, Warren Davison introduced a bill to Congress, and I quote him saying, “Congress represents American citizens, not illegals living in our country,” which is an absolute lie and not what the constitution says. He goes on to say, “The Biden administration’s open border policies necessitate our legislation to ensure fair representation for US citizens. Further, our bill guarantees equal protection under the laws of Congress and protects the value of US citizenship.” How does this help the situation of people coming across the border legally and illegally? Once again, it is simply fear-mongering with no action. His suggestion does nothing but propose something unconstitutional and, at best, a racist dog whistle.
One part of the current Senate bill going to the House would allow the Homeland Security secretary the ability to decide to bar migrants from seeking asylum if they crossed the border unlawfully, which is precisely why they want Secretary Mayorkas to be impeached. He does not currently have the power to do this, yet Warren Davison wants him to break the law but won’t sign on to fixing the law.
I support the current legislation, which would help curb immigration and illegal entry over the border, as well as give much-needed funding to our allies in the fight against terrorism. As a US congressperson, I would work bipartisanly to help secure the border while doing what’s best for the Americans and the people of Ohio.
