We’re all going to fail and each failure is a rung on the ladder to success. Sometimes those failures will be grand while others they’re just little slips on the way up. And the best part is that the more you fail, the more amazing that achievement will feel when you get there!

Teens today grow up bombarded with messages about what success looks like, from social media to peers to teachers and parents. Enmeshed in this achievement culture, they are struggling to find their way. Dr. Beth Cooper Benjamin has spent her career researching and working with adolescent girls to identify ways to support them in embracing the process and define their own version of success.

Dr. Benjamin has also learned how in her own work she, too, can let go of the idea of perfection.

In our conversation, Dr. Benjamin and I talk about how to help teens shift away from achievement culture, the expectation of perfection that adults push on teens, the role of parents and educators, and the importance of celebrating the process of growth and learning.

Culture has shown us that perfection is something we should strive for. What that perfection looks like and what we’re aiming for depends on who you are and where you are in life.

This week on the podcast, Dr. Beth Cooper Benjamin shares why we need to shift away from achievement culture, especially as it pertains to our youth. But even the teacher has a lesson to learn.

“Every time I shared a draft of my work with my writing group, I would fantasize that they would all say it was perfect and I shouldn't change a thing...and every time I had to brace for the inevitable ego blow of learning that they had substantive critical feedback to offer (and learning to trust that the feedback always made my work better!).” - Beth Cooper Benjamin

Beth and I talk about the impact achievement culture has on our teens’ mental health, the role parents and educators have in this, and how we can start celebrating the process (and failures) that come with reaching toward a goal.

It’s always surprising to hear of incredibly accomplished people who still live in imposter syndrome. It happens to all of us, that fear of being found out as a fraud or that fear that we’re not living up to someone else’s expectations of us.

I think the most important thing is to find joy in what we’re doing and in our own lives and remind ourselves that we ARE experts in our own right.

Easier said than done. I’ve done a lot of work around this over the years, and the job is never done.

If you haven’t already tuned into this week’s podcast episode, you can hear Christine Alvarez and Eileen Springer talk about some ways through this.

As ambitious women, we like to be in the driver’s seat of our lives and careers. It’s often difficult to know which way we’ll turn when we get to the next intersection. When we’re driving a car, navigation will tell us where to go. But in our careers, we should be our own navigation system.

This week on the podcast, I’m talking with executive coaches Christine Alvarez and Eileen Springer about how to show up for yourself, do the hard work, and start to create the career and opportunities that light you up. For some, that might mean growing in your current organization and for others it might be deciding how to re-enter the workplace after a long hiatus.

The beauty of passing years is that we truly are wiser as we progress through life. We can look back at our experiences and understand the meaning behind some of them and use our wisdom to help us make decisions about our future.

This week on the podcast, Christine Alvarez and Eileen Springer are sharing from their combined experience in the executive coaching and leadership spaces about combatting imposter syndrome and growing into your next best self and professional.

“I have a much stronger sense of my weaknesses that helped me understand my career better.” - Christine

“We are more resilient than we think…Do not go it alone.” - Eileen

This week’s episode is a bit different from any others so far in this podcast because not only did I get to interview two experts but I was also able to do it in person. It was so much fun sitting down with both Eileen and Christine in real life.

We all see opportunities every day, but we don’t always act on them. Lauren Demarest did, and she’s now built two businesses simply because she wasn’t able to book an exercise class while vacationing in Greece. On this week’s episode of Good Enough for Now, she shares how and why she took this big leap of faith.

Through the process, Lauren combatted imposter syndrome and mental health challenges that only helped her in her personal and professional growth.

In our conversation, Lauren shares what it’s like to build a business in a country where she doesn’t know the language or culture, how she’s learned to trust herself and her gut, why creating an inclusive wellness community has been such a big priority for her, and how she’s managed her inner critic.

Adversity is all around us and letting roadblocks, even massive ones, get in the way isn’t an option for many of us.

“I used to think that I could do anything, but going through loss, anger, change, and disappointment, I realize that’s more true than ever. The world is yours for the taking!” - Lauren Demarest

This week on the podcast, Lauren Demarest shares some of her own roadblocks as she built a business in the wellness industry that relies on tourism just as travel shut down. But she didn’t give up and even thrived through adversity, loss, and navigating a culture that is the opposite of how she operates.

Lauren and I talk about redefining success, building a business to sell, finding the right team members, and taking a leap of faith.

A lot has changed in our culture around working from home and there’s a long way to go, and much of that work is within our own vision of success. Along with it the definition of stay-at-home moms needs updating, with many moms trying to stay connected to their professional ambitions while being present and involved with their children.

In this episode of Good Enough for Now, Neha Ruch discusses the gray area between motherhood and work and shares how to stay connected to your professional identity even as you choose to stay at home. Tune in to hear more about exploring the challenges of motherhood, embracing the present, and accepting and trusting yourself as a parent working in or out of the home.

Most often, our roadmap for success comes from our upbringing and societal norms. It’s up to us to create our own path, which means doing a lot of self-reflection and learning to trust ourselves.

This week on the podcast, Neha Ruch shares her own story, from watching her mom go back to work to letting go of what her 20-something self sought out, to discovering her own values and sense of self-trust.

It’s okay to shift how we define our career ambition while being present with our children. At the same time, it’s okay to stay connected with our professional life in whatever way makes sense in our own lives.

And I’d be here for this! One of the things I love about the Good Enough for Now podcast is that I get to talk to women (and men!) at all stages of life transitions. It’s about taking our experiences and learnings from our first 40 years so we can make the back half exceptional.

Many women reach a certain point in their careers or lives and start looking for their Plan B. Rather than wait for someone else to decide what that looked like for her, Georgina Moore shares how she created her next chapter, literally, on this week’s episode of Good Enough for Now.

Leveraging some “extra” time she found during the pandemic, Georgina took pieces of life and work experience to write her debut novel, The Garnett Girls.

In our conversation, Georgina shares what it was like to go from book publicist to author to now publicizing her own book and how this experience will help her to be more effective and empathetic with her own clients. We talk about the importance of portraying characters of a certain age in novels and television, how to find time for mothering and doing what brings us joy, and much more.

As we age, we come to terms with the fact that time is finite. And it’s time to script opportunities for ourselves.

This week on the podcast, Georgina Moore shares where she found the time to write her debut novel and how she made a mindset shift so she’d have the courage to put it out there in the world.

“The most important part was having the nerve to put my manuscript out. I wasn’t going to waste my opportunities...This is something you get really sensitive about as you enter middle age.” - Georgina Moore

It’s always hard to put yourself out there, and it’s our experience in our industries and maturity in our 30s, 40s, and beyond that can help us take the first step.

We’re not perfect and we can’t expect our family members or teammates or employees to be perfect either.

It’s a hard concept to wrap your mind around, but the more we strive to be perfect the more miserable we’ll become. Trust me. I’ve been there!

There’s a lot to be discovered about yourself and others through mistakes, and every imperfection is an opportunity for reflection and growth.

I recognize my privilege as a white woman living in North America. I was raised to expect that I can be anything. The trick is reminding myself that I don’t have to. It’s okay to ask for help or to let go of things that don’t serve me…or that I simply don’t want to do.

This week’s podcast episode is a great reminder of some of the stories we tell ourselves as women and that we need to let go of some of those limiting beliefs.

Many women shy away from leadership roles or calling themselves a leader because of how they’ve been conditioned. We’re taught that leaders are masculine and demanding and that women should focus on their feminine gifts.

If you’re reading this, you know this isn’t true. But is that what you’re telling yourself? This week’s podcast guest, Ashley Cox, helps develop women leaders as they hire productive and resilient teams. And she reminds us of the truth behind leadership.

In this episode, Ashley shares about the importance of intentional leadership, why accountability isn’t a punishment, and her own journey in finding herself and her own power.

We all have events in our lives that have made a big impact and laid the path for where we are today. For this week’s podcast guest, Ashley Cox, it was an experience with a manager:

“A manager once told me I needed to ‘toughen up’ because my ‘team would run all over’ me. I think that was the catalyst for teaching leadership development to women and being a champion of not having to change who we are in order to fit some arbitrary mold and be great leaders,” she says.

This is so true, and I think the sooner we learn (or remember) that we’re all unique in our work and our leadership styles, the sooner we can do the work we’re called to do.

On this week’s podcast episode, guest Anne Pillsbury shares a story of trying to help her eldest daughter after she was diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade. As a high achiever, Anne panicked and grieved all the amazing things her daughter would now never be able to do. She started helping her with projects and pushing her expectations on her.

In the end, Anne did more harm than good.

After learning to let go of control and let her daughter advocate for herself and develop her own tools, her daughter flourished. And today, she’s on the dean’s list of veterinary school.

Listen in to Anne’s interview about letting go of her pattern of control and where she focused her energy instead.

This week’s podcast guest, Anne Pillsbury, wanted to go back to work as her children got older and found that her role at work and at home didn’t always fit her vision. Until she did the work and made it happen.

In this episode, Anne shares her journey as she re-entered the workforce and the challenges she felt at home and work through the process. She shares how she stopped trying to solve her kids’ problems and the resilience she saw from them as a result. If you’ve had some life experience, you know that once we surrender and accept the things we cannot change, our lives change. The only thing we have control over is our choices and thoughts.

This week’s podcast guest learned this as she navigated her eldest daughter’s dyslexia. And she was reminded of it after a few challenging tries at getting back into the workforce. Today she’s coaching other women in reinventing themselves to do the same.

One positive that came out of the last few years is the ability for large organizations to innovate and find creative ways to have employees work remotely. Now that we know it’s possible, we need to continue to offer flexibility so our families can thrive and everyone can live a life that aligns with what’s important to them.

A lot of people are shifting priorities to create more work/life harmony, including ambitious and top-performing dads. This week’s podcast guest, Paul Sullivan, wanted to evolve his role as dad and help other men to do the same. So he left his job as a New York Times columnist to create a community to support dads like him who want to be the Lead Dad in their families.

In this episode, Paul shares why companies need to trust their employees more, how working from home can offer the flexibility that so many people need, and why striving for an A+ life is unrealistic. He also shares his own personal journey in leaving his full time career so he could be more present in his role as Dad…and why 2022 was the right time to do it.
