Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has said he is "making progress" in a mediation mission with junta-led Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, after the trio announced their departure from regional bloc ECOWAS.

"I am making progress with this mission," Faye said on Sunday at the Doha Forum for political dialogue in Qatar.
"There is nothing today to prevent the Alliance of Sahel States from being maintained, since it is already there and is a response to the security situation facing these countries in particular," he said.
He added that "at the same time, this should not, in my view, mean the disintegration of ECOWAS."

The three Sahel countries announced in January they were leaving the Economic Community of West African States, which they accused of being subservient to former colonial ruler France and failing to support them in their fight against jihadist violence.
Their departure becomes effective one year after the announcement, in January 2025, according to the bloc.
The trio have formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) after severing ties with France and pivoting towards Russia.

ECOWAS appointed Senegal's Faye as a "facilitator" in July to try to convince the three breakaway Sahelian states to remain in the bloc.

Mahama, who served as President from 2012 to 2017 and Vice President from 2009 to 2012, is set to return to lead Ghana.

Ghanaians began voting on Saturday for new lawmakers and a president for the next four years.

The presidential race features 12 candidates, with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a leading contender. His main rival is former President John Dramani Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mahama previously served from 2012 to 2016 before losing to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is not running for re-election.

Syria opposition forces have declared that the 24-year rule of President Bashar al-Assad has come to an end, hours after fighters entered the capital, Damascus, following a lightning advance across the country.

In a statement broadcast live on Syrian national television on Sunday, a group of fighters said the “tyrant al-Assad has been toppled” and that all prisoners have been freed from a major prison facility in Damascus.

“The city of Damascus has been liberated. The tyrant Bashar al-Assad has been toppled. All the prisoners have been released from the prison of Damascus,” a leader of the group said.

“We wish all our fighters and citizens preserve and maintain the property of the state of Syria. Long live Syria,” he added.

The opposition said al-Assad, whose family ruled Syria for more than 50 years, had fled the capital. His whereabouts remain unknown.

In a video statement, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said the government was ready to “extend its hand” to the opposition and turn its functions over to a transitional government.

KMC to Receive $26M UNCDF Blue Peace Fund for Development.

Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) is set to benefit from the United Nations Capital Development Fund's (UNCDF) $26 million Blue Peace Fund to support its development programs. During a recent visit to UNCDF headquarters, Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda discussed the status of the fund and addressed bottlenecks delaying its disbursement.

The visit followed Bensouda's participation in the Round Table of Mayors Migration Council meeting, where global mayors and development organizations gathered under the UN General Assembly. The fund aims to enhance KMC's development projects and boost cooperation with international partners.

Meanwhile, Journalist Momodou Justice Darboe was granted bail for the sum of D25,000 last week.

The duo were arrested and detained earlier for an article authored by Journalist Momodou Justice Darboe in The Voice Newspaper which reports that President Adama Barrow has been working on an exit plan and has chosen businessman Muhammed Jah as his successor.

Aliou Cissé, who has served as head coach of the Senegalese national football team since March 2015, is no longer in charge.

According to a recent report from IGFM, Cissé officially stepped down, with the Senegalese Football Federation confirming in a press release on Wednesday that his contract will not be renewed.

The announcement comes just ten days before Senegal’s match against Malawi and only 48 hours before the squad list was to be announced for the 3rd and 4th rounds of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In response to this urgent development, Cissé's assistant, Pape Thiaw, is expected to step in as interim coach for the team’s CAN 2025 qualifying campaign.
