Writing poetry does not have to be excessively hard because there is a probably a style that perfectly fits your needs and creative preferences! If you like short poems, try haikus. If you like longer and more complex pieces with rules try the sonnet. Also check out below for a guide to blank verse, rhymed, free verse, and the epic!

Poetry is everywhere, in birthday cards, books, magazines, quoted on walls, and in plays, TV and movies. Most of us probably studied poetry at school, and maybe we were even encouraged to write a couple of our own at some point - but how do you actually compose a poem? Writing a poem can be

When you start a new story or poem you often need a creative writing cue, or concept to get you started. You sometimes want an idea that prompts you to write a story, or a poem. Something that begins your writing might be as simple as a color, or a smell. However, a creative writing provocation can also be a fully formed plot!

It can take a literary agent a few months to a few years to make an offer. But this can vary dramatically and is one of the most drawn-out processes in the publishing journey. The waiting time causes many to give up.

You’ve submitted your manuscript, and you’re waiting for the agent, or agents, to make an offer on it. But how long can you expect to wait? It can take a literary agent a few months to a few years to make an offer. But this can vary dramatically and is one of the most drawn-out

Publishers don’t always read the whole book or manuscript before giving an author a book deal. They require that the author only send them the first chapter, as they can often gauge a book’s quality and marketability from this alone. If they’re intrigued, then they’ll request more.

Publishers are busy people, so it should stand to reason that around 10% of the books submitted to them are even looked at. When they do pick up a manuscript, they don’t always read the entire book before deciding to publish it. Publishers don’t always read the whole book or manuscript before gi...

Publishers usually do not print books for you because they don’t print books at all. Instead, publishers mostly work with printers, who print the books. Self-published authors choose between offset, on-demand, or short-run printing services.

Getting a book published can seem impossible. Some agents only work with published writers, and many publishers will only look at manuscripts submitted by agents. Is it possible to pay a publisher to print a book? Publishers usually do not print books for you because they don’t print books at all....

You should write a narrator into your play as a single character if you want to create a special connection with the audience. A dedicated narrator is also helpful when the story is told from only one perspective or if you want to mislead the audience with an unreliable point of view.

All narratives have a narrator. However, plays have maintained uniqueness in how stories are shared with an audience, leaving writers with a great deal of freedom and responsibility to choose the best type of narrator. The type of narrator you write for your play dramatically affects how the audienc...

Book reviews count as publications, as any written work created to communicate an idea to the public is a publication. If you’re asked to name publication types, book reviews should qualify, as it communicates an idea to the reader.

In an academic context, a review counts as a publication in and of itself. Remember that as book reviews are generally not peer reviewed, they will not count as peer reviewed publications in the academic context. However, does the same apply to a book review in a non academic context? Book reviews c...

The easier tense to write in is the one that fits your story, so there isn’t a tense that’s better or easier than the other for storytelling. Authors use past tense most regularly to write their novels, so there are more resources and examples regarding past tense writing.

Before you begin to type your novel, you should decide which tense you’ll write it in. Once you’ve chosen, you must use this tense consistently throughout the novel and intercut with other tenses if they add to the story. The easier tense to write in is the one that fits your story, so there isn...
