What is your one golden rule in life?
After doing software engineering, I feel completely lost. Although, I scored 3.6 GPA (I understand GPA doesn’t define you). Everyone in my family, friends, and professors is confused why I am not applying for jobs.
I clearly remember when I meet with one of the professors from the university after 1 year of graduation.
Professor: Hina, what are you doing nowadays?
Me: Ma’am I am teaching at school.
Professor: Shocking stare at me, really, did you forget you’re Software Engineer?
Me: Whenever I read job descriptions for software engineers, they always require 10- or 5-years’ experience or a minimum of 2 years. They want someone how is an expert in coding and handling projects. They don’t want book knowledge, they only welcome practical knowledge. After reading this job description, I don’t feel I am fit in this job description.
Professor: Clueless face – If you want to become a teacher then why you waste your 4 years in engineering. You can become a teacher even after college?
Me: Ma’am… I am about to give the answer but.
Then the assistant of ma’am comes into the office and our conversation ends there. Although, I say goodbye to ma’am and leave the office. But the question in my mind is still there.
How someone degrades the profession of teaching when he is also a part of it?
Whether it’s the Education system or companies they both teach students and employees, that the world is a difficult and scary place to leave.
The education system shame students who find difficulty in learning and companies mistreat interns.
That’s the reason people never able to find their true purpose and meaning in life. For me, purpose or meaning is something that you enjoy, or you feel energized by doing it. But again TV, YouTube videos, and some Books present the definition of purpose in such a wrong way.
You don’t have to invent SpaceX and tesla like Elon Musk, Microsoft like Bill Gates, Apple computers like Steve Jobs to have a purpose. Your purpose can be different, let say you find happiness by planting trees, by making your family happy, and writing.
But then you watch the interview of Elon Musk where he is determined to invent SpaceX and Tesla. After watching it, you feel lost and question your ability, like he is inventing such big things and you just want to plant trees.
You feel shame having such a small purpose and you abandon your purpose.
Whether it’s my professor or some YouTube video, there is always someone who tells you that your purpose is small, or you need to do something else.
