Meet Shaina, an artist and activist originally from New Orleans who has found a home with Bomba in Loíza.

“I'm from New Orleans, born and raised through and through. I came to visit during the pandemic when things were slowly opening, with a friend. And from there it was like this world unfolded to me.”

While we were in Puerto Rico, we had the opportunity to attend a protest for public education, and we we were so inspired by the passion everyone has for the cause. These are a few of the people we met and whose stories we felt were so important to share 🇵🇷✍🏼

Sheila is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Bomba. She shared the story of its history as well as its place in Loíza when we were lucky enough to participate in one of her classes on our trip. Her Taller N’zambi corner of the beach was one of our favorite places to spend time and learn about the Loíza community!

Today is the day! We are so excited to showcase how Windy cultivates her community by serving the people of Loíza based on their needs, and encouraging them all that they are capable of creating. The day that our crew met Windy we watched the program’s theater workshop for older adults in action, and it certainly brightened our day!🎭😊
During our time spent with Windy, we were lucky enough to see for ourselves some of the wonderful programs that you will hear about later this week. This theater workshop is only one of the many ways that she works to help the wonderful people of her community. Getting to both see and learn more about how these women come together to shed light on one another’s true importance and value was truly inspiring to us!✨❤️

“Bambulae Sea Ya”
This phrase is one that we heard repeatedly during our time in Puerto Rico, and find ourselves still singing together throughout long days of watching footage and working on our film. “Bambula” signifies the importance of remembrance and connection to the roots of Afro-Puerto Rican culture. It points to the necessity of always staying in touch with the ancestry and history of such a powerful community, allowing it to live on for future generations.🇵🇷🪘❤️
As we move closer to the release of our film later this year, we felt it was important to make sure our audience better understands the people and places whose stories we will be sharing. Loíza has been a main focus of this project since it began, and we want to ensure that it is received in the same way that we experienced and grew to love it ourselves.
Happy New Year everyone! We hope you all had a happy and healthy holiday season surrounded by the people you love, however that may have looked this year. Today we’re looking back at one of our favorite 2021 memories as a team - our trip to Puerto Rico to film the documentary that we will be premiering later this year!
