Meet Shaina, an artist and activist originally from New Orleans who has found a home with Bomba in Loíza.

“I'm from New Orleans, born and raised through and through. I came to visit during the pandemic when things were slowly opening, with a friend. And from there it was like this world unfolded to me.”

“Soy de Nueva Orleans, nacida y crecida hasta la médula. Vine de visita con una amiga durante la pandemia cuando las cosas se estaban abriendo lentamente. Y desde entonces fue como que este mundo se abrió hacia mi.”

Shaina provides some amazing insight into why our film is so important, and how her relationship with her race has changed in the different places she’s lived and visited💃🏽🇵🇷

“I am a faithful believer that first I have to help my family, which is my community and that is what moves me, to be able to be an agent of change for the people who grew up with me.”

“Soy fiel creyente que primero tengo que ayudar a los mios, que es mi communidad y eso es lo que me mueve, puedo ser un agente de cambio para las personas que crecerion conmigo.”

Later this week you’ll be hearing more from him about the special way he has worked to spread Bomba throughout his community!🎶🇵🇷

Sheila is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Bomba. She shared the story of its history as well as its place in Loíza when we were lucky enough to participate in one of her classes on our trip. Her Taller N’zambi corner of the beach was one of our favorite places to spend time and learn about the Loíza community!

Meet Sheila Osorio Ferrer, a cultural manager who is passionate about educating people about Loízan and Puerto Rican culture.

“When I am dancing bomba I express everything that I possess in my heart and in my mind. It is a connection between my body and my mind. It is a dialogue in which my body dances, and flows as it feels the music.”

“Al bailar bomba o yo como toca ahora no se ve mucho, pero sí lo que es el sentir es yo cuando bailo la bomba expreso, mi sentimiento de lo que tengo en mi corazón y lo que tengo en mi mente. Y ahí es un vínculo, es un diálogo en que mi cuerpo baila, lo dejo llevar, es sentir por la música.”

As we move closer to the release of our film, learning more about bomba is a crucial way of connecting more to the story we hope to share!🪘💃🏽

“Bambulae Sea Ya”
This phrase is one that we heard repeatedly during our time in Puerto Rico, and find ourselves still singing together throughout long days of watching footage and working on our film. “Bambula” signifies the importance of remembrance and connection to the roots of Afro-Puerto Rican culture. It points to the necessity of always staying in touch with the ancestry and history of such a powerful community, allowing it to live on for future generations.🇵🇷🪘❤️

As we move closer to the release of our film later this year, we felt it was important to make sure our audience better understands the people and places whose stories we will be sharing. Loíza has been a main focus of this project since it began, and we want to ensure that it is received in the same way that we experienced and grew to love it ourselves.
