iPhone 12 may not support 5G in dual-SIM mode right out of the box. The alleged discrepancy was first highlighted on Reddit over the weekend, following which an internal Apple training document posted by a user in the discussion seems to have confirmed the issue. Apple first introduced dual-SIM functionality in its iPhones with the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max launched in 2018. And the latest iPhone 12 models (the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max) launched on October 14 come with dual-SIM support — a physical Nano-SIM and an eSIM — along with 5G support.

“When using two lines in Dual SIM mode, 5G data isn't supported on either line and will fall back to 4G LTE. If customers are using an eSIM only and are on a 5G supported carrier and service plan, they'll have 5G access,” reads the alleged training document that the poster on Reddit claimed is from Apple's Sales Web resources. Meaning that a user will have to disable 5G on either the physical SIM or the eSim to get 5G speeds on the new phone.

Mac Rumours first spotted the discussion and writes that it has independently confirmed the authenticity of the document.

In subsequent replies to the original Reddit post, another user who claims to have accessed Verizon's training documents, says that the issue with iPhone 12's dual-SIM 5G support will be fixed with a software update later this year. It wasn't immediately clear if all the iPhone 12 models will be shipped with this issue intact. Apple has not commented on the issue or its fix yet.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro will become available on October 23 in the UK, US, China, and more than 30 other countries where pre-orders began on October 16. The iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max in the same set of countries can be pre-ordered from November 6 and will become available from November 13.
In India, the iPhone 12 series starts at Rs. 69,900 for the 64GB iPhone 12 mini. Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro in India begin on October 23 and availability starts from October 30. The iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max can be pre-ordered from November 6 and early customers can expect to get their hands on the new phones from November 13.

Microsoft Teams will soon be getting an AI-based noise suppression feature that will automatically remove unwanted background noise during meetings. This will be an update to the existing noise suppression feature – users will now have control over how much noise suppression they want. There will be a new ‘high' setting users can opt for on Microsoft Teams that will suppress more background noise. The feature will be rolling out in November.

The AI-based real-time noise suppression feature is currently listed as ‘in development' on Microsoft 365 Roadmap. First spotted by Windows Latest, the AI-based noise suppression works by analysing an individual's audio feed on Microsoft Teams and using specially trained deep neutral networks to filter out the noise and retain only the speech signal.

While the listing on the Microsoft 365 Roadmaps says that the feature will be available for desktop worldwide, there is no word on whether or not it will roll out to Android and iOS.

New Version of Microsoft Office Incoming That Won't Be Subscription Based
Popular video-conferencing service Zoom also has an option called ‘suppress background noise' in the noise cancellation feature. Users can adjust the settings to high or low, depending on their needs. Google Meet too, has a noise cancellation feature that is available for Android and iOS. It filters out background distractions such as dogs barking, pen-clicking, typing, closing a door, or sounds from a nearby construction site.

The Microsoft 365 Roadmap also lists more new features for Teams that are in the works. Presenters will soon be able to customise how content shows up for meeting participants, allowing for a more dynamic viewing content experience. They will be able to overlay their video and content or move their content box to a corner of the video screen. This feature is expected to roll out in December. In the same month, users will be getting another feature that will allow them to let others know they are not available by scheduling ‘Out of Office.' Their unavailability status will be displayed every time someone reaches out via chat.

19/10/2020

Samsung has regained its top position in the global smartphone market as of August 2020 after losing it to Huawei earlier this year, Counterpoint's latest report suggests. It also returned to the top spot in India as well, for the first time since 2018, according to the report. In August the Korean giant enjoyed 22 percent of the monthly global smartphone market share – the highest by any manufacturer to do so. Huawei has reportedly slipped into second position globally in August with 16 percent market share, a significant decline from April when it enjoyed a market share of 21 percent. Xiaomi, on the other hand, is seeing a steady increase and it has 11 percent of the global smartphone market share as of August 2020.

There was a temporary downfall in Samsung smartphone sales during April due to the lockdown restrictions in major markets like India, the report says. However, the company seems to have rebounded as India recovered from the lockdown. In India, Samsung adopted aggressive online channel strategy to seize the opportunities arising due to anti-China sentiments, and it has managed to gain the highest market share in the country since 2018. Globally, Samsung's market share has increased by 2 percent since April to August – from 20 percent to 22 percent.

However, the gap between the global smartphone market share of Huawei and Samsung has widened due to decreasing smartphone sales of Huawei. In April, Huawei managed to take Samsung's top spot with 21 percent market share, but it declined to 16 percent in August 2020.

Xiaomi has managed to increase its global market share from 8 percent to 11 percent from April to August 2020, Counterpoint says. The increase is attributed to the company's strong presence in markets like Central Eastern Europe, leveraging Huawei's decrease in market in this region. Apple has kept its momentum steady with 12 percent global smartphone market share since April, all the way down to August 2020. The report says that there should be an increase in sales with the launch of the iPhone 12 series but that rise will only be seen in November. iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020 sales have helped in keeping things steady till then.

Counterpoint research analyst Minsoo Kang feels that Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and Oppo will see a rise in smartphone market share. “Geopolitical policies and political affairs among nations are affecting the smartphone market in many ways. There will be heightened marketing activity to seize opportunities in these regions and segments. As a result, the concentration of top players in the smartphone market will be much stronger. We see players like Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and Oppo benefiting the most.”

Toshiba said on Monday it aims to generate $3 billion (roughly Rs. 22,011 crores) in revenue from its advanced cryptographic technology for data protection by 2030, as the Japanese sprawling conglomerate scrambles to find future growth drivers.

The cyber security technology, called quantum key distribution (QKD), leverages the nature of quantum physics to provide two remote parties with cryptographic keys that are immune to cyberattacks driven by quantum computers.

Toshiba expects the global QKD market to grow to $12 billion (roughly Rs. 880,48 crores) in 10 years with the advance of quantum computers, whose massive computational power could easily decipher conventional math-based cryptographic keys commonly used in finance, defence and health care.

Toshiba Smart TV Range to Launch in India on September 18
The company is hoping to tap global demand for advanced cryptographic technologies as cyber security has come to the forefront of national defence. China is aggressively expanding network infrastructure for QKD, including quantum satellites that relay quantum signals.

The company said it has teamed up with Verizon in the United States and BT in Britain in pilot QKD projects, and is in talks with another telecommunications carrier in South Korea.

Since a crisis stemming from the bankruptcy of the US nuclear power business in 2017, Toshiba has conducted a series of restructuring steps, including the sale of its laptop and television set businesses.

It is now focusing on public infrastructure businesses that are resilient to a global economic slump driven by the coronavirus outbreak.
