On November 30th, Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix stopped along the off-ramp of Interstate 15 in Las Vegas to check on a driver who appeared to have fallen asleep behind the wheel. As the two troopers activated their emergency lights and were standing next to the car, a passing vehicle being operated by a drunk driver struck them at a high rate of speed and fled the scene. The impact caused the two men to fall from the off-ramp to the road below. Both of the troopers suffered fatal injuries and were rushed to UMC Trauma Hospital where they passed away.

Las Vegas Metro PD Officers began a grid search to look for the vehicle involved and quickly located a matching truck with major front-end damage, consistent with striking a pedestrian. According to the arrest report, detectives conducted a search of the interior and found a Nevada State Police badge inside; presumably belonging to one of the fallen troopers. Officers responded to the registered owner’s residence, where the driver who was behind the wheel was taken into custody. Through the investigation, it was determined the suspect had been drinking at a Las Vegas casino and was escorted out because of how intoxicated he was. Surveillance video in the area showed him enter his vehicle and drive away. Sergeant Abbate and Trooper Felix were killed in the collision just a few minutes later.

37-year old Sergeant Michael Abbate was a 10-year veteran of the Nevada Highway Patrol and had just been recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He leaves behind a wife and young son.

54-year old Trooper Alberto Felix was a 4-year veteran of the Nevada Highway Patrol, and previously served his country in the United States Air Force. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
