This week I'll be adding an attractive dividend payer to the What's in Stock portfolio. In case we see a stock market pullback or correction in the coming weeks, this particular stock should also provide some downside protection for the portfolio.

For those that aren't aware, in the investment community the term correction often refers to a 10%+ decline in the overall stock market. While there are several reasons a correction might happen, one of the most common reasons is for stock prices to "correct" to reflect their fair value. This tends to happen when the market becomes overvalued.

Sticking to our investment philosophy, we continue to focus on identifying undervalued companies, ensuring that we build a well-diversified portfolio with exposure to various sectors that can weather a market downturn.

Since mid-September, we've invested consistently into the What's in Stock portfolio and purchased stocks that will provide over $1,000 of dividend income annually. Yup, the portfolio income has officially hit the comma club! Sticking to a value-based investing approach since Episode 1, the portfolio continues to outperform the S&P 500 by double-digits!

After 20+ weeks, the What's in Stock portfolio is still outperforming the S&P 500 by double digits!

After not dedicating enough time to complete a thorough analysis of any companies last week (and deciding to play it safe by adding a $1,000 cash position to the portfolio), I made some time to dig through some financial statements. I'm happy to report that I think I've identified a stock that has a relatively attractive margin of safety at the moment.

In the investment world, the principle of margin of safety can be summarized by the idea of investing in a stock that has more upside potential than downside risk. In this case, I'll be investing in a stock that I think is undervalued based on some of its metrics.

Sticking to our investment philosophy, we continue to focus on identifying undervalued companies, ensuring that we build a well-diversified portfolio with exposure to various sectors that can weather a market downturn.

In case you didn't see it, the stock market set new record highs this past week (I'm talking about the S&P 500 in particular)! Maybe my conservative approach over the past few weeks was unwarranted, but I still think that certain valuations are a bit stretched and we could potentially see a market correction in the future.

This week's pick for the What's in Stock portfolio is probably the most interesting addition that we've made yet!

Sticking to our investment philosophy, we continue to focus on identifying undervalued companies, ensuring that we build a well-diversified portfolio with exposure to various sectors that can weather a market downturn.

While many investors are still reeling from the chaos that ensued this past week due to the WallStreetBets induced short squeezes on stocks like GameStop (symbol GME) and AMC Entertainment (symbol AMC), I went digging through financial statements to find the next addition to the What's in Stock portfolio! And the good news is that I think I've found a pretty enticing stock to add.

As I mentioned last week, stock market valuations had me a little bit on edge and my intuition ended up being correct. Even though the market pulled back a touch, I still think it could fall further in the coming weeks/months. That's why this week's pick is based on sound fundamentals, an appealing dividend, and a sustainable future. I mean, the company makes money from the wind. How cool is that!

Sticking to our investment philosophy, we continue to focus on identifying undervalued companies, ensuring that we build a well-diversified portfolio with exposure to various sectors that can weather a market downturn.

Saying that we’ve seen some pretty big moves in the stock market this week would be an understatement.

There have been a handful of stocks that have found themselves in the spotlight, namely GamesStop (symbol GME) and AMC Entertainment (symbol AMC). These stocks have been pushed higher by retail investors collaborating on the WallStreetBets subreddit and investors subsequently dumping billions of dollars into these stocks to push the prices higher.

The moves in the stock prices have been amplified further by short-sellers purchasing shares to exit their short positions.

I uploaded a video late last night talking a little bit about how these trampled stocks have soared to ridiculous heights, how the event directly impacted one of the stocks we hold in the What’s in Stock portfolio, and the move I made to capitalize on the opportunity presented.

As the stock market seems to continue setting record-high after record-high, the valuations of certain companies are getting out of hand. It's starting to make me a little nervous, and that's why we'll be adding a rather conservative position to the What's in Stock portfolio this week that should hold up well if we start to see some red in the stock market due to a market correction/downturn in the coming weeks or months.

This week we'll be investing some of our hard-earned dollars into Fulton Financial Corporation (symbol: FULT).
We'll be adding a company from the financial sector to the What's in Stock portfolio to continue our diversification efforts. FULT has displayed solid dividend growth over the past decade and it has shown incredibly consistent earnings growth over that same time period. This particular company has a sizeable exposure to commercial and industrial real estate as well, which makes for an interesting play.
If you have any thoughts on the company, let me know in the comments!

I've been hosting a series on YouTube called What's in Stock since mid-September where I share what stock we'll be investing in for the upcoming week. Since inception, we've purchased stocks that will provide over $900 of dividend income annually! Sticking to a value-based investing approach since Episode 1, the portfolio continues to display strong performance.
So far, the portfolio is outperforming the S&P 500 by over 20% (as of market close 01/08/2021).

This week we're investing some of our hard-earned cash into Cisco Systems, Inc.(symbol: CSCO).
We believe the company is well-positioned in the current digital environment due to the various products and services offered to help other businesses succeed online. Looking at the current price, the stock appears that it might be undervalued when taking earnings into consideration. In addition, the stock has a dividend yield over 3% currently, (as of market close on 01/04) and has displayed a focus on dividend growth over the last decade!

In my opinion, credit cards undeservingly get a bad reputation.
Like most other things, a credit card is nothing more than a resource, a tool to help you accomplish a goal. How you use that tool is what really matters.
When used responsibly a credit card can provide great benefits! There are cards that offer cash back, travel perks, and some even offer incredible sign up bonuses (more on this later)!
When someone tells you credit cards are dangerous, take their comment with a grain of salt. There are plenty of people out there that have never paid a Nicholl of interest on their credit cards (huh? see what I did there?)!
Instead, they're getting rewarded for buying things that they already planned on buying in the first place. Are you?

To be a successful investor, you certainly don’t have to be the smartest person in the room.
You do, however, need to ensure you aren’t making your investment decisions emotionally. A lot of investors get into trouble when they get too emotionally involved.
For example, investors might get caught up in market-euphoria and make a rash investment decision or they might liquidate a substantial portion of their investment portfolio by panic-selling when the market is down (can you imagine how you would feel if you sold off all your positions back at the end of March?)
I like to think of myself as a very level-headed individual (sometimes to the point of annoyance according to my wife). As difficult as it might be to admit, I occasionally let my emotions get in the way of my investment decisions. It doesn’t happen often, and I always vow that it will be the last time, but it nevertheless happens again.
Thankfully, we've implemented a helpful strategy to combat emotional investing.

Except for the mortgage, we are officially consumer debt-free!
Regardless of whose advice you’re listening to while on your journey toward financial independence, one item that finds its way to the top of nearly every list is eradicating debt, especially consumer debt. In most cases, consumer debt is slowing your progress toward financial independence by delaying repayment, encouraging you to live above your means, and incurring additional interest charges along the way. I’m very excited to report that, except for our mortgage, Nicole and I are officially consumer debt-free!
Last week, we made our final car payment for Nicole’s vehicle! That means the number of creditors we owe shrunk from two to one, leaving just our mortgage lender. No longer having to make that car payment will free up $200 in our budget each month! As I mentioned in last week’s blog post, to reach our annual goal of $10,000 in dividend income for 2021 we are going to need to drastically increase the amount we invest each month. Even though it would be nice to throw that $200 into our vacation sinking fund each month, that’s probably not a realistic option at the moment.
In general, consumer debt includes items like credit card debts, student loans, vehicle loans, mortgages, and other personal borrowings. When you take out a loan for that new car you’ve been eyeing or when you put a new pair of shoes on your credit card, you’re incurring additional consumer debt. Since business-related and investment-related debts are used to generate income they don’t typically fall under the consumer debts umbrella.
For those of you thinking it, I agree that there are various situations where using debt can be a good decision, even for some types of consumer debts. For some examples of those scenarios, check out this previous post about using debt to your advantage.
I firmly believe that the easiest path to zero consumer debt is by. . .
