Ambracian Gulf, Gulf of Actium or Amvrakikos Gulf (Greek: Αμβρακικός Κόλπος)
🔹🔹🔹
One of the largest enclosed gulfs and one of the National Parks in Greece.
Known for the Battle of Actium (31 BC), in which Octavian's forces defeated those of Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra, and for the last days of Kostas Karyotakis' life. He was one of the greatest Greek poets and after 33 days in Preveza he committed su***de at age of 31 (1928).
🔹🔹🔹
Some places to visit: Preveza (popular historical area: Nicopolis), Lefkada (one of the Ionian Islands and a great summer destination), Arta (Bridge of Arta; the folk ballad "The Bridge of Arta" tells a story about a human sacrifice during its building).
🔹 🔹 🔹
The easiest way to get there is by airplane, since Aktion International Airport (PVK) is built near the Gulf's entrance.
Other ways: by bus (from Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities as well) or by car (there's a developed road network).
