CONFIRMED: ASUP Suspends Strike, Directs Lecturers To Commence Academic Activities On 30th May.

Lecturers in public polytechnics across the country will resume on May 30, 2022, following a directive from the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.

A statement by the national publicity secretary of the Union, Abdullahi Yalwa, stated that within the two weeks of the definite strike, significant inroads were made in four (4) of the items on their list of demands.

The union urged the federal government to quickly attend to the remaining five demands to allow industrial harmony to continue to thrive in the nation’s polytechnics.

“The two weeks definite strike of the union will be rounding off on the 29th of May, 2022, as agreed by the emergency meeting of the NEC. Consequently, the union is requesting members to resume duties effective 30th of May, 2022, while hoping that government will take advantage of the window to address the five outstanding items.

“Further directives/ updates shall be released after the 103rd meeting of NEC which is scheduled to hold in the month of June, 2022, during which the situation shall be reviewed,” ASUP stated in the statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Abdullahi Yalwa.

Poor Working Conditions, Unfavorable Environment, Reasons Why Lecturers Are Leaving For Ghana, Other Countries – Osodeke
......

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke who spoke to newsmen on issues surrounding the ongoing strike by university lecturers among others, made it known many lecturers are leaving for other countries due to the poor condition of service in Nigeria.

Osodeke, when asked what he thinks is responsible for the massive brain drain of lecturers, (making reference to the NUC's 100,000 lecturers to over 2.1 million students in universities.) He replied saying;

“... we have less than 60,000 lecturers and not 100,000. The ratio is much wider than what was said by the NUC. What do you think is responsible? It’s because we can’t recruit. Because of our condition of service, lots are leaving the country for other countries, but nobody is coming here. That’s the problem. That’s why we recruit people who are not fit to be lecturers. We need to improve on our condition of service so that we can attract lecturers from all over the world, so that those who have left due to brain drain can come back; we will not be moving forward if we don’t do this. We have to upgrade the condition of service in Nigeria in such a way we can attract lecturers all over the world”

On what he thinks is the way out? He said; “For you to get the best, you have to improve the welfare package. A lecturer is earning about $600 a month here, but $10,000 a month abroad. Nigerians are running away in droves because of the poor working conditions and environment.

On the issue of foreign universities coming to advertise to Nigerians? He said;

“People will come from outside to take our people away. We were told by the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) that every year Nigerians pay N1.6tn to foreign universities. So, they are coming for marketing. People come from the outside to come and take our people away because they know that we have the money to pay. Nigerian lecturers are leaving because of the poor learning condition.

Nigeria should do the right thing and implement our agreement, upgrade the university system and fund universities appropriately so that we can attract students from all over the world.”

When asked if he thinks the government will heed his advice? He responded, saying;

“If the will is there, they will do it. Remember in the 1980s, we were telling Ghana to go; now, we are the ones going to Ghana. Budgetary allocation to education in Nigeria is 5.4 per cent, but in Ghana’s is 16 to 20 per cent. So they should work on that. If we upgrade our own, people will come here. Increase in budget will suffice. For you to attract those people here, you have to increase the welfare package of lecturers.”

Emefiele Should Be Fired Over Naira’s Declining Value, Political Ambition – ASUU Vice President Blows Hot
........

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said on Saturday that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, be fired over the naira’s declining value.

The CBN governor, according to the organization, should be sacked for disappointing Nigerians and plunging millions into poverty.

Dr Chris Piwuna, ASUU’s Vice President, said this in response to reports that the naira had declined further, trading at N420.33 versus the dollar.

He said, “For how long is the government ready to tolerate Godwin Emefiele? For how long are Nigerians going to tolerate him? Can our Naira continue to breathe under him? Is our nation living in isolation of the global economy?

“Our naira is in tatters under his inept leadership. The President must fire him because he has fired our collective desire to progress and plunged millions into poverty and lack. It’s time for him to leave.”

The Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State has said it would join the forthcoming two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.

According to the Deputy Registrar of YABATECH, Mr Joe Ejiofor, told NAN that the management of the institution does not have control over the decision of ASUP which YABATECH happens to be a chapter under it.

“I have since communicated this decision to the President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“My constituents, political associates and well-wishers across the country are by this statement informed of this latest decision, which also has the blessing and support of the overwhelming majority, hence supersedes any other interest, personal or otherwise.”

We Are Not Suspending The Strike, Govt Haven't Done Anything Yet – Osodeke

"On what ground? What have they done? If we should suspend the strike now because of their plea, they will end up not doing anything later which is tantamount to us having wasted 3 months for nothing. If they will do anything, let them do it now, we're not suspending the strike."

– ASUU National President, Emmanuel Osodeke on whether the union is considering taking the offer of Federal Government which is to suspend strike for a period of time.

2023: ASUU Strike Not Acceptable. We'll Spend Resources Necessary To Move Education Forward – Tinubu Promises

Tinubu said this when he met Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari and APC delegates in the state, on Monday, May 9, 2022.

During the meeting, the former governor of Lagos State condemned the incessant strikes of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying the lingering industrial action by university lecturers is not acceptable.

The presidential hopeful maintained that he has the experience to turn around the “sorry” situation of the country.

Speaking about his chances, Tinubu said, “Anybody can run but not everybody can become President. You have to have the track records, experience, vision, training and the developmental programme — a vision of changing a nation from poverty to prosperity. I’ve it all; I’m different from them. They’re candidates, they’re aspirants but I’m an aspirant.

“It happened when Mr President was contesting. They said he (Buhari) cannot win the presidency. We worked together and he won. The second one, they all abandoned him, we say no; he has his second term. And he said the thing is over anybody who wants it can run.”

On the ongoing ASUU strike, the former governor of Lagos State promised to bring an end to incessant industrial actions by lecturers.

“Four years of university should be four years. Some of our children are spending six to 10 years in school. The strike is not acceptable. We will spend resources and investment necessary to move education forward in this country,” he said.

It Doesn’t Make Sense To Earn Salaries When You Have Refused To Work – Nwajiuba Tells ASUU

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has said it doesn’t make sense for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue to earn salaries while on strike.

Speaking to journalists in an interview, Nwajiuba said, “The lecturers have continued to earn salaries while on strike; it doesn’t make sense to earn salaries when you have refused to work.

“If you refuse to even pay them, by the time they call off the strike, they will still come back to fight for the payment of the period they refused to work.

“You can air your grievances, come to the negotiation table without refusing to work. The issue of the strike has become a thing of concern. I have four children; two have graduated while the other two are still in public universities. I feel for them, I feel for other students who are at home. I feel the same way other parents feel, but can I bring money from my house and give it to ASUU?

“The Ministry of Education isn’t the employer of the lecturers, we are a supervisory body, and there is no way we can fire or hire someone. Universities have governing councils that supervise the activities that go on, our job as in the ministry is to supervise, we can’t meddle in.”

FG Spends N5.9b To Train Youths On Phone Repairs, Why Not Fund Our Engineering Departments In Universities? – Odidi

Odidi Princewill, a host of the Nigerian National Conversation and social-political commentator, has taken to his social media handle to berate the Federal Government over its move to spend N5.9b to train youths on smart phone repairs.

The author and social media commentator, urged the government to channel such funds to establish a few fully equipped smartphone manufacturing companies, or fund engineering departments in Nigerian tertiary institutions instead.

He wrote:

“Federal government spends 5.9 billion Naira to train youths on smart phone repairs. Unimaginable! This same amount is sufficient to establish 3to 5 fully equipped smart phone manufacturing companies.

“You can imagine how our clueless leaders reason. Dig deep you will be amazed how many people were even trained. 5.9 billion to train for phone repairs. What is the budget of engineering departments in universities?

“While China invest in engineering in her schools for kids to build small industrial complexes, our leaders invest billions to train artisans who will never be empowered. 5.9 billion!

Someone Who Should Be Focused On Providing Funds For Striking Academic Unions – Reno Fault Nwajiuba Presidential Ambition

Nigerian lawyer and bestselling author, Reno Omokri, has tackled Nwajiuba, Nigeria's State Minister for Education, over his 2023 Presidential move.

The former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, expressed concern over the ongoing industrial actions, while questioning the source of his income for being able to buy the party's Presidential nomination form.

He wrote “ ASUU is on strike due to lack of funds. NASU is on strike due to lack of funds. ASUP is on strike due to lack of funds. NUT is on strike due to lack of funds.

“Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, whose salary for the seven years he has been minister is not up to ₦100 million, and who is prohibited by law from running a business while he is in government, and who should be focused on providing funds for these striking educational bodies, just bought a ₦100 million APC Presidential nomination form? ASUU Don't Need To Embark On Strike For Their Demands To Be Met – Nwajiuba Speaks As He Joins Presidential Race

On the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Mr Nwajiuba made it known that financial autonomy was the only solution to addressing the incessant strikes by the union.

He acknowledged that the impact of ASUU strike was huge on the Nigerian students.

Nwajiuba said that the federal government had continued to appeal to ASUU to seek redress to its means of payment on Integrated Personnel and Payroll System (IPPIS) rather than the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

The minister used the occasion to call on the Academic Staff Union Of Universities,ASUU, to call off its ongoing strike, saying they did not need to embark on strike to be attended to by authorities.

He urged the union to return to classrooms so that students can go back to the classroom as the federal government looks into their demands.

He said it is the duty of the government to give life to the 2009 agreement signed with the union to make sure that the universities that the federal government owns were properly funded even as he said “government’s funding is very limited.”

I Have Done What Napoleon Could Not Do, ASUU Can’t Sweep Away My Untiring Efforts – Ngige Boasts

Ngige, according to a statement by Labour and Employment Ministry’s Acting Head of Press and Public Relations, Patience Onuobia, said he feels for his children and their contemporaries affected by the strike.

His words: “In the ongoing ASUU imbroglio, I’m the conciliator. I bring them to negotiate with their employers – the Ministry of Education and the National University Commission as well as IPPS, the office of the Accountant -General of the Federation, all under the Ministry of Finance.

“At the end of every negotiation, we put down what everybody has agreed on in writing and add timelines for implementation

“When conciliation fails, the Minister is under obligation... to transmit the results of the negotiation to the Industrial Arbitration Panel or to National Industrial Court of Nigeria...”

”But let me tell you. There is nothing new about ASUU strike. It has been a recurrent decimal. In the last 20 years, ASUU has gone on strike, 16 times. So, there is nothing new as such.

“What is new however is that I have done what Napoleon could not do . You can ask them”

“I’m sure that in the innermost part of their hearts , they can’t sweep away my untiring efforts. I’m the only conciliator lately, who has conciliated and put timelines on agreements and pushed all the parties, the government side to implement and stick to the timelines. Such fidelity wasn’t there hitherto.” he disclosed.

ASUU Needs To Be Called To Order – Special Adviser on Education to Lagos State Governor, Wahab Disclosed

The Special Adviser on Education to the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, when receiving a letter written by EWAN on behalf of the governor, explained that the state’s tertiary institutions were running before strike. He also called for a change of narrative on the part of ASUU.

“In Lagos State, you can confirm that our institutions are up and running. However, I feel the pain of parents across board.....”

“With due respect, you can count how many times our children have been in school. It is not good enough. However, let’s look at why things are not working? ASUU needs to be called to order.

”It is not every time we go through this narrative. What have we done to our system? We are churning out half baked graduates, they are not even half baked, but quarter baked or not baked at all. And these are questions we should be asking ourselves which are affecting the whole strata of our education, except in Lagos.” part of his statement reads.
