Project Title: Four Eyes House - Coachella Valley

A weekend desert residence for a family and their
dog, the Four Eyes House is an exercise in
site-specific "experiential programming". Rather
than planning the house according to a domestic
functional program, the building was designed
foremost as an instrument for intensifying a
number of onsite phenomenal events.
Four "sleeping towers" are oriented towards four
spatiotemporal viewing experiences: morning
sunrise to the east, mountain range to the south,
evening city lights to the west, and nighttime stars
overhead. Each tower contains a compact
top-floor bedroom, sized only for the bed, and each
with a unique aperture directed towards the view.
These bedrooms are equally-sized and unassigned,
such that the family's sleeping locations can be
rotated based on each individual's desired viewing
experience. Vertical circulation within the towers is
similarly particularized (e.g. ladders, spiral stair,
switchback stair, or shallow-riser stair).
Ground-floor common spaces form a loose
connective field between the discrete tower
volumes, and offer a more permeable relationship
to the landscape.

Project Title: De Los Alamos Ressidence by James Glover Home, Inc.

Nestled on the cliffs in San Clemente, this remodel
was driven by a desire to create a home that
allowed for seamless integrated living. The
segregated rooms that existed needed to be
broken apart to create a home that is perfect for
family living and easy to use as a place of
entertainment. The upstairs great room is a perfect
example of multiple rooms now integrated as one
large open zone. This seamless living is enhanced
but the use of the same minimal materials,
throughout the house. The connection between
interior and exterior was also enhanced by the use
of large sliding and stacking doors. This allowed
for a greater use of the exterior space. With
clusters of gathering spaces now dispersed
throughout the home and garden space, this home
is
a unique setting for entertaining and the perfect
example of how to take full advantage of the
California climate and life style.

Project Title: NAHB The New American Home 2017

This 8.753 square-foot home is designed for
graciousliving and as a multi-generational home
that takes advantage of Florida's year-round
climate. The home includes indoor/outdoor space
and a design to accommodate homeowners of
various ages and abilities.
Designed in the international architectural style, the
golf-resort inspired home design is influenced by
the great midcentury-modern homes located in
Florida and California. The home, styled as "pod
living", has rooms that are connected by both
breezeways and halls, but can be closed off when
not in use. There are three detached pods and
three attached pods.
The furniture, finishes and details of this home are
crafted to be visually quiet to allow majestic
interior views and world-class art collection to take
center stage. In some cases, the materials
themselves become art, like the great room
fireplace and powder rooms. The home is designed
to have a spa-like, resort feel. It achieves this
through the use of soft textural materials, indirect
lighting and warm plush textiles

Project Title: South Island Ressidence by KZ Architecture

An expression of Modernism in the tropics, this
Residence was one of the last single family
enclaves along South Florida's coast line. The
residence was developed for a family of six on an
infill island lot fronting the Intracoastal Waterway.
With adjacent homes to the North and the South,
the house is designed around a Western courtyard,
with all the rooms organized around it. A series of
outdoor spaces was developed to weave a
continuity of spaces and materials from the street
to the water. The house has sensibly designed
spaces taking the site into consideration, both the
single height outdoor terrace and the double height
terrace under the intended metal canopy shelter
the home from the strong West Florida.
Overall, horizontal and vertical planes of glass,
stone, wood and white stucco are activated by the
pervading light to accomplish an indoor-outdoor
integration of spaces and form. In both outdoor
and indoor spaces, the two slate walls-the one
framing the entrance and the one in the rear that
cloaks the BAR-B-Q -are in dialogue with each
other to emphasize the continuity from front to
back. The sequence culminates with the wooden
dock which evokes the entry courtyard of the same
material. The same wood, Ipe, also frames the
geometry of the balconies on the second floor.

Vuecrest is a community of mid-century modern
homes in Bellevue, Washington. Design covenants
require that all roofs be gabled or hipped, with not
less than 3:12 slope. Our clients sought a
distinctive design that would still be approved by
the community review board. Turning the gable to
the broadest elevation, facing the street, created
the desired drama and was embraced by the
neighbors. The resulting interior volume allows for
high, cedar faced ceilings. Exterior materials-dark
gray brick, cedar, concrete, metals-were also
selected to fit with community standards. Large
sliding glass doors disappear into wall pockets to
create a continuous indoor-outdoor flow to a
terraced yard with play area, gardens, and swim
spa.

Project Title: The Pierre

The Pierre | Olson Kundig Architects.
2014 Recipient | Institute Honor Awards for
Architecture
There is a seamlessness between the natural
environment and the interior of this project. It is
unique. The Pierre, French word for "stone" is a
2,500-square-foot residence inspired by the
owner's affection for a stone outcropping on her
property and the views from the site. Conceived as
a bunker nestled into the rock, from certain angles
the house - with its rough materials, green roof,
and surrounding lush foliage - almost disappears
into nature.
To set the house into the site, portions of the rock
outcropping were excavated using a combination
of machine work and handwork. Excavated rock
was reused as crushed aggregate in the concrete
flooring throughout the house and as a boulder
wall in the carport. Excavation marks were left
exposed on all the stonework to serve as a
reminder of the building process.

Jury Comments:
This is a "wish you had done it" project; great
concept, well built, and well executed.
The juxtaposition of the built and the natural forms
is very well done and well detailed.
The excavation of the building inside the living rock
on this site is really quite incredible; the drilled
stone exposed to the interior is amazing.
This is a house that challenges convention and
succeeds.
This project is a beautiful design response to
beautiful setting. It has a fascinating
medieval-modern feel; exquisitely crafted.
