*ADULT STS 1001 - LOVING AND SERVING THE BODY OF CHRIST*
*MEMORY VERSE: “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only uses not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”* (Gal 5:13).
*TEXT: Galatians 5:13-15; Romans 12:3-10*
Today’s topic titled, _*“Loving and Serving the Body of Christ”.*_ The body of Christ depicts the people who are called out of their sins and washed by the blood of Christ and through their repentance from evil works; the Lord had mercy on them and they became the saints of God and formed the body of Christ which is also known as the Church of Christ or the Bride of the Lamb. Christ therefore is the head of the Church.
*1. THE UNITY OF BELIEVERS IN CHRIST*
_*Rom 12:4-5; 1Cor. 12: 12-14; 10: 17; Gen 3: 26-29; John 17: 20-21; Eph. 2:10-22; 4:4-6*_
The scripture in 1Cor. 12: 12-14 captures the correct position of unity among believers to Christ "For as the body is one, and hath many members, all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we bound or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many".
The unity of the Church has greatly added to the success of the Church in the New Testament including our own assembly today. Every member therefore must live in unity with one another to enable the Church to progress.
_*Question 1: How can one become a member of the body of Christ?*_
By repentance and forsaking of one’s sin and faith in the atoning blood of Christ for our sins.
The Church ought to be one: just as members of the physical body. Christ has placed each member in his body for a specific purpose. As we are baptized into Christ (when we are born again) all our tribal, national, social, professional or academic discriminations are set aside and we are fused into one identity – the body of Christ.
_*"Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all".*_ (Eph. 4: 3-6). Here we see very clearly how the Holy Spirit emphasizes the unity of the body. This is the purpose in John's gospel. _*“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that thou has sent me”*_ (John 17: 20-21).
_*Question 2: Mention some attitudes that can affect Church unity.*_
Church unity will be strengthened when members do not have tribal consideration in their relationships, including the marriages and businesses. When the members do not allow their nationality, social status, professional or academic qualification to determine their association but Christ. It takes humility from each member of the Church to keep the unity of the brethren.
Cooperation from all members is required to enjoy unity. _*"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body and all members have not the same office; so we, being many, are one body in Christ and every one member one of another".*_ (Rom 12:3-5)
*2. UPHOLDING LOVE AND UNITY IN THE CHURCH*
_*John 13: 34-35; 15:9-12; Rom 12:9 ,10; John 17: 9-11, 19-21; Gal 5:13-15; Acts 2:44-47; 1Cor 6:5-8; 12:23-26*_
Problems are test of unity in the Church. When there are no problems, almost all members profess love, unity and friendship. But when problems arise real unity is proven. This happened in the Corinthian Church _*"I speak to your shame. Is it so, that these is not wise man among you? No, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren".*_ (1 Cor.6: 5-8).
_*Question 3: Mention the reasons some brethren despise others in the church.*_
It is the time of offense and disagreement we know true Christians. How do we respond when somebody steps on our toes, cheated us or there is a clash of interest? All these are settled amicably when there is unity. Such problems are settled in families or by the leader of the local Church (Matt 18:18). The Bible says offense must come (Matt 18:7), whatever the offense and wherever the source, we must endeavor to keep the unity of the spirit in the home and in the Church in the bond of peace. _*"A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another”*_ (1 John 13-34).
_*Question 4: Why must we love the brethren?*_
Love is the principal thing in Christendom. It is the heart of Christianity. _*"He that says he is in the light and hateth his brother is in darkness even till now”.*_ 1 John 2:9. Jesus Christ did not only gave us the commandment to love, he also show us the example of love by loving wretched sinners. We must love as Christ loved us.
*3. UNDERSTANDING AREAS OF SERVICE AND MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH*
_*1 Cor. 12: 27-31; Rom 12: 4-8; Acts 6:1-6; 8:6-8, 26-40; Gal 5:13 Acts 9:36-39; Titus 2:3-5*_
_*"Having the gifts differing according to the grace of that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness".*_ (Rom 12: 6-8).
_*Question 5: Mention some ministries and areas of service available in the Church.*_
Preaching the gospel is number one, and a must for all believers, however, having brought the people/converts to the Church there are various responsibilities in form of services towards believers. The following are some of them:
1. Teaching and caring for the Children - *Children Worker*
2. Teaching and caring for Adults - *House Leadership.*
3. Singing for God's glory - *Choir Member.*
4. Taking care of people's movement in the Church - *Ushering Work.*
5. Praying for the need of the Church - *Prayer Warrior.*
There are others not mentioned. It will be difficult for a sincere Christian not to find anything to do among these. The book of 1 Cor 12:29-30 says _*"Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?”*_ This is to say that we cannot all be Pastors but whatever the Lord has put in our charge, we should be faithful at it.
_*Question 6: What is wrong in seeing some services in the Church as unimportant?*_
It is wrong to classify some works in the Church as carnal and unimportant, because God places high premium on every ministry in the Church because He sets up all the ministries. The Bible also says whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your heart (Eccl 9:10) we should not idolize any ministry or look down on any assignment in the Church. Giving, visitation, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and giving water to the thirsty are as rewarding as any other ministry or position in the body. (Matt 25:31-46). Whatever we do for God in sincerity, holily and will certainly be rewarded one day. One thing the Lord requires in service is our faithfulness.
