For too long, the Boston sports media landscape has been non-inclusive when it comes to African-American personalities, and their opinions. The cities two stations, 93.7 WEEI and 98.5 The Sports Hub, are pillars in the sports talk world, and tops in the country when it comes to ratings and impact. However, of the 8 shows that air on these 2 stations from 6am to midnight, with almost 14 regular hosts and numerous cycled guests, only 1 regular POC's voice can be heard at this time......former Patriots TE Jermaine Wiggins, who splits time between WEEI's morning show and afternoon program.
For years, I as well as many other Boston born and raised black sports fans, have had to listen to mostly older white men, give opinions about sports played predominantly by people of color. Many times miscasting, misjudging or misinforming the listeners about cultural nuances, and how this different perspective can pertain to sports. The lack of diversity amongst hosts and their opinions, both culturally and otherwise, I find to be nauseating. There are many knowledgeable, credible, qualified sports fans, who come from where I come from, experience what I've experienced, and look just like me, who deserve to be heard. Who deserve to be represented. Who deserve to have a platform...
