Most of the land that makes up present day Rhode Island was once ruled by the Narragansett Nation. The Narragansett Nation consisted of various sub-tribes, each one of them having their own Sachems. All of these sub-tribe rolled up into the most powerful tribe in the region, the Narragansett Tribe. The Narragansetts were led by their Head Sachems, Canonicus, and his nephew, Miantonomi. When Roger Williams was banned from Massachusetts in the winter of 1636, New England was in the middle of a time known as the little ice age. Tempers dropped so low that even the Narragansett Bay froze over. Legend states that by the time Williams made it to the land of the Pokanokets that he was on the verge of death. Thankfully, a Pokanoket medicine woman, known to the English as Margaret, nursed Williams back to health at a large rock before bringing him to their winter encampment on Mount Hope. The rock is known as Margaret's rock today and it's located just over the Warren, Rhode Island border.

People have lived along the shores of Bristol, Rhode Island for at least 10,000 years. During the early and mid-17th century, these shores were ruled by the Pokanoket Tribe. Roger Williams visited the Pokanokets often so that he could trade with their people which helped him to develop a strong friendship with their Sachem, Ousamequin. Eventually, Williams claimed that the English had stolen some of the natives land and began advocating for their rights while still fighting for religious freedom.
