Gaden Namgyal Lhatse (celestial Paradise in a clear night) aka the Tawang Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in India. It was built between 1643 and 1647 CE. by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso. It belongs to the Gelug school of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Situated atop a mountain at an elevation of 10,000 feet, the magnificent monastery overlooks the Tawang river valley and lies in close proximity to the Tibetan and Bhutanese border. It is also ranked as the second largest monastery in the world after Borobudur in Indonesia.

Enclosed within the walls of the monastery is a network of prayer halls, assembly halls, a library and accomodation for as many as 500 monks. The festivals held in the monastery are the Choksar, Losar, Ajilamu, and Torgya. Torgya, is an exclusively held annual festival here.
The objective of the festival is to ward off evil spirits and pray for all round prosperity and happiness to the people in the ensuing year. Whenever you plan your next trip to Arunachal, this historical marvel should be at the top of your list.

"Although I deeply love oceans, deserts and other wild landscapes, it is only mountains that beckon me with that sort of painful magnetic pull to walk deeper and deeper into their beauty. They keep me continuously wanting to know more, feel more, see more." – Victoria Erickson

Celebrated by the Nyishi tribe, Longte Yullo is the only festival of the state which does not involve any sacrifice(animal’s). It is one of the oldest and agriculturally significant festivals of the tribe, that ushers in a new harvest season after which sowing of seeds on cultivated fields begins.

The actual meaning of Longte is a large fence/barricade made up of bamboo. This barricade is symbolic of a separation between the realm of humans and that of the evil spirits. An altar decorated with white feather of domestic fowl and bamboo decorated flowers etc on top is erected by the villagers to mark the occasion.

This barricade is also synonymous to the separation of every negative attribute that plagues mankind from the positive ones. Like light from darkness, surplus from scarcity, good from bad and health from illness. This year, in a way, the entire world is celebrating the spirit of Longte. Our houses and the mindful practice of social distancing are the “barricades” that will keep us and our loved ones safe from the fatal effect of the corona virus. Keeping up with the essence of Longtey, let's battle the calamity that has befallen upon the entire mankind together.
