I hope everyone had a good 4th of July. We got soaked in a rainstorm that had the indecency to start just minutes before the fireworks were supposed to go off. They made everyone clear out because of the potential for lighting in the area. So hopefully all of you had a better holiday than ours.

What I really want to tell you about is that the latest episode of Kellogg’s Global Politics has just been published. Ryan and I react to Biden's horrible debate performance and add substance to the tangents of foreign policy mentioned in the debate. The episode also features an interview with Sameer Lalwani, discussing India's Foreign Policy. Hope you get a chance to check it out!

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Sameer Lalwani, a senior expert on South Asia at the U.S. Institute of Peace on India’s Foreign Policy. We touched on topics ranging from how India would likely respond to a Chinese invasion of Ta...

The past few weeks have seen several important elections in India, the EU, and Mexico. We discuss the impact in their respective regions and to the larger international environment.

We also discuss the latest in the EV battery wars. Is there a path forward for the U.S. to decrease dependence on China, and does it come at the cost of meeting U.S. environmental climate goals?

I have been traveling all month, and there are a lot of big stories that have happened in the meantime. We begin our coverage with the surprising passage of a ban on TikTok. Will the social media platform soon be gone for good? And are we already in a Cold War with China? Should we be “managing competition” or pursing policy that will “win the war.”

In the also surprising, but welcome category, an aide to Ukraine bill finally passed. What was behind Speaker Johnson's change in position, and how will the aid change the situation on the ground?

Israel and Iran traded military hostilities and the war in Gaza still rages. What is the significance of the recent events? And what is happening on US campuses, where waves of protests and arrests have been occurring?

Check all of this out in our latest episode

Anita has been traveling all month, and there are a lot of big stories that have happened in the meantime. We begin with China and the surprising passage of a ban on TikTok. We also discuss a provocative article arguing that we need to change our ...

Listen now to the latest episode of Kellogg’s Global Politics:

We discuss all the big wins Putin has received lately, including Navalyny’s demise, the opportunity to spread his propaganda to Western audiences through Tucker Carlson, and Russia’s solid economic growth.

The news keeps getting better for Putin with Ukraine’s struggles on the battlefield, while future military assistance continues to be blocked in the US Congress.

Finally, we look at the continuing conflict in Gaza, frustrating the White House and its hopes for a ceasefire that would see the release of the remaining hostages.

We have a big favor to ask. The downloads of the podcast have dropped recently, and we would like to know how we can improve the show. Please take 5 minutes of your time to complete this brief survey. I know surveys are very low on the list of things people like to do, but it would be a huge help to me. The answers are completely anonymous, so you don't have to worry about hurting our feelings. Even if you have never listened to the show and have no intention of ever listening to the show, your input is valuable. Thanks!

David Maxwell states what many have begun to realize. “Kim Jong-un is not going to give up nuclear weapons. They are critical to every aspect of his rule and survival of the regime. He has no intention of it, and there is no way that we will be able to negotiate [on this]. There are no carrots, and there are no sticks that will cause him to give up his nuclear weapons.” Listen to the full episode at https://www.buzzsprout.com/1656913/12371687 to learn how the US can best accomplish the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. I recently spoke with Bonnie Glaser of the German Marshal Fund on a number of issues affecting US-China relations. We discussed the impact of the spy balloon discovery, whether the two countries can find a way to lower tensions, and under what circumstances China might risk a war with the US over Taiwan.

Also, Ryan Kellogg and I debate whether mainstream news coverage of conspiracy theories can dent their credibility. Specifically, we go over Seymour Hersh's accusation that the US blew up the Nordstream pipeline.

We also talk about the World Bank's purpose, how climate change fits into its mission, and why a shakeup in its leadership is important.

On this episode, Anita speaks with Bonnie Glaser, who is the managing director of the German Marshall Fund's Indo-Pacific program. Our conversation is all about China as we discuss spy balloons, Taiwan, and the conditions that might spark China to...

To Crimea or Bust? Should the US should support a Ukrainian offensive to take back Crimea or would such an action risk a nuclear war with Russia?

Why are sanctions not doing more to hurt Russia's economy?

What message are the Chinese try to send with last week's spy balloon?

How significant is the agreement to expand US military operations in the Philippines to any war over Taiwan?

Will it take a war to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear state?

As always, Ryan and I have a lot of thoughts about these questions and more on the latest episode:

We begin with the latest updates on the Russia-Ukraine War and how Russia’s sheer numbers in manpower might help it regain momentum. We also discuss the debate over whether the US should support a Ukrainian offense in Crimea and why Western sancti...

Is China trying to push the U.S. out of the Middle East or fill a vacuum created by US troop withdrawal? Jonathan Fulton of Zayed University explains why the answer to both questions is no and how China benefits from the stability the U.S. provides. He also discusses how China’s economic relationships in the region go beyond the need for cheap oil.

Ryan and I talk about the latest updates on the Russia-Ukraine war, including the flow of Western military equipment into Ukraine. We also discuss why Putin is losing the energy war with Europe.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is in Africa this week. We explain why she is there and what the US hopes to achieve. We consider the trip in light of Russia’s and China’s recent diplomatic tours of the region.

Listen here:

On this episode, Anita spoke with Jonathan Fulton, a Professor at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. We discussed China’s relationships in the Middle East and how they go beyond seeing the region as a source...

There is a new episode of Kellogg’s Global Politics! In this episode, we discuss Russia’s growing losses in Ukraine, signs of dissent from Russian elites, and intrigue in global energy markets. We move on to East Asia where North Korea’s Kim Jong-un is vying for attention with a missile launch over Japan. We also discuss Biden’s new economic war with China, particular in light of the recent moves to ban the selling of semiconductor chips to Chinese companies.

We have all the updates! In this episode of Kellogg’s Global Politics, we discuss Ukraine's counteroffensive, a proposal to cap the price of Russian oil, Brazil's upcoming Presidential elections, and consider whether the recent violence in Iraq will lead to a civil war in the country. We also talk about the latest on our own research projects. Ryan shares his proposal on how the U.S. can improve its energy security. I discuss my new research project that explores why China has not been able to use its asymmetrical trading relations (the fact that the Chinese economy is less dependent on trade with most countries who are themselves very dependent on their trade with China) into influencing the foreign policy decisions of its trading partners. As always you can listen to the show on our website or find us on apple podcasts, stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

While democratic backsliding is plaguing most of the world, Joseph Asunka, CEO of Afrobarometer explains why offers an unexpected glimmer of hope.

We also discuss the aftermath of Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan and whether it has led to a new normal in the Taiwan Strait. We look at the specter of populism in Italy, as well as Kenya’s third democratic election and what it portends for the future of East Africa. We wrap up the show by looking at the non-aligned movement and why these countries refuse to take sides in the Russia-Ukraine war.

27/06/2022

Sanctions on Russian oil have backfired, doing little to reduce revenue to Russia, while taking a heavy toll on Western economies. We discuss why sanctions cannot be based on emotional reactions or the need to punish, but must have clear goals with thoughtful consideration of the unintended consequences.

Next we reflect on how Biden’s Summit of America’s was undermined by his insistence that he would not invite the autocratic governments of Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba leading to Mexico and others countries to boycott. Instead of increasing democratic norms, is the US weakening its influence in Latin America?

Now that the results are in we continue to look at the impact of the Colombian Presidential Elections on the United States. Will Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first leftist President, be the next Hugo Chavez or govern as a moderate to avoid upsetting Colombian elites? And how likely is Colombia to wean itself off oil production and exports in an era of high prices?

We conclude the episode with a special guest. When the war in Ukraine began, my colleague at Johns Hopkins (SAIS), Steven Schrage, jumped on a plane to help the refugees crossing into Poland. (Seriously, I showed up to our virtual staff meeting to discover he was zooming in from Poland.) Steven is someone I deeply admire. I am so happy that I was able to talk to him about the Ukrainian refugee situation and the problem of human security. We discuss his experience on the ground interviewing refugees and volunteers about the lack of measures to prevent abuse. He also shares the positive signs of change in implementing procedures that will do more to protect these refugees.

In this episode, we talk about Biden's recent trip to Asia as the US attempts to (re)pivot back to this critical region despite the ongoing war in Europe. We start talking about the Yoon-Biden summit, which renewed and expanded security cooperation between South Korea and the US. Next, we discuss the real goal of the trip: the renewal of policies meant to contain China's growing regional influence. Here we discuss Biden's controversial statement on Taiwan and the announcement of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework–what is it, and will anything of substance come from it?
