2023 – A New Year – new endeavors, new goals, new and beloved friends, time with families, appreciation and gratefulness for life and the art form we share, and additionally for us, a NEW DIRECTION.

Features: Our Cover Girls this issue are some of the Icons featured on the GREAT AMERICAN DANCE ICONS – The Who’s Who in the Belly Dance Cabaret World – DVD produced by the amazing Amaya. Inside is the article Are you an ICON? What makes an ICON? by MaShuqa Mira Murjan with photos by Carl Sermon, featuring those who had the joy of gathering at Carl and Ma*Shuqa’s beautiful home in California in September 2022 to celebrate together in performance with the warmth of delightful guests and to enjoy Amaya’s wonderful workshop. Sahlala – Past, Present and Future of one of America’s premier International Dance Companies (originally created by Jillina and now led by Jill Collins) by Tori King, and the SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD presented to Jillina Carlano by The Isis Foundation, complete our three features.

We’re always excited about the stunning photos of events! Terrific Yalla Raqs the Palace 2022 – Yellow Rose of Texas Competition Winners with photos by Tammye Nash, Beaucoup de Bellies and BABDAMA Fall Festival photos by Carl F. Sermon Photography. These photographers are the backbone of every dancer and drummer’s history of performance – we can never thank you enough!

Wonderful articles: Spotlight on Invaders of the Heart 2023: The Radiant Tarot by Tori King; Refresh, Reclaim, Rebuild by Stasha Vlasuk; Meeting at a Distance by Dallas "Columbia Strawberry Cunha" Martin; Why do I write? Can anyone be a Thought Leader? by Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan.

Two of our favorite continuing writers: Nizana El Rassan brings us two events – both the Dinner Showcase at the Sheridan Market (Seattle WA) and Night in the Global Village – Live from Spokane (WA), and Ma*Shuqa gives us a fascinating article with a Music Review of the CD - “Safar Band”. And, of course, we are so proud to have the continuing support of our marvelous advertisers – thank you so much for your support!

NEW DIRECTION: We are excited to deliver the BELLY DANCE CHRONICLES new NEWS! Beginning after this first issue of 2023 (and after publishing the most-read Middle Eastern Dance Magazine for nearly two decades), beginning in print, then digital (and read in up to 30 countries), we will now be transitioning to a new (soon to be announced) platform. Please go onto Joomag by February 15, 2023, to download and save any issues published on Joomag. We will advertise and notify everyone when decisions are confirmed. We love and appreciate you all!

Love and hugs, Isis and Del

The September issue is now available!

We hope you have warm and loving Holidays to round out the end of 2022 with families and friends and in your chosen careers. In Texas, we’re so excited about FALL – it’s been a weather challenging year! We wish you new inspirational experiences in your creative endeavors – we’re ready for new ideas and growth.

Our Cover Girl this issue is multi-trained, creative, funny and talented Saqra from Washington State and now TEXAS – welcome back beautiful. This interview by writer and dancer Nizana El Rassan, showcases one of our favorite and most entertaining and knowledgeable dance and music performers.

Events and all the wonderful photos are back! Terrific Hot Raqs 2022, Carnival of Stars 2022, Cairo ShimmyQuake and ManiFest Unity Festival photos by Carl F Sermon Photography. Plus, Yalla Raqs the Palace in July 2022 with photos by Carl F. Sermon Photography and Tammye Nash Photography. These photographers are much-loved, much needed, and much appreciated recorders of our dance and musical performances – thank you to all our photographers from our hearts.

Arabic Words Defining Tarab by MaShuqa Mira Murjan is so informational, and Ma*Shuqa also shares with us a Music Review of the just released - “Sound of the Sultans”: with Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Ibrahim Turmen, Amin and Raymond Khoury, Sherif Sarakby, Nick Mouganis, and Hadji Tekbilek - the Sultans band.

Amaya, in 10 Things Every Belly Dance Should Know, brings you great input for those of you who might think you are ready for the next level in the dance business. And then a step on the wild side; Stasha Vlasuk gives us a comprehensive look at Snake Dancing – an ancient tradition in modern performance.

We hope you support those all-important ads of upcoming Events and Journeys to spark your imagination and increase your skills! Our sensational Vendors who create, advertise, stock and offer music and so many costumes to make it possible for us to look sensational and dance to great music.

It’s been wonderful, especially through the Pandemic, to be a recorder of so many of you who have continued to grow in music and dance, to present your art form to family, friends and the also all-important public – in person, on Zoom, on Facebook. YOU are amazing and are why we do what we do.

A loving shout-out to Amaya, Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan and Carl Sermon for a fabulous weekend of food and love, honors and great dancing, and fascinating conversations with additional Icons Tamalyn Dallal and Karen Barbee plus wonderful evening show dancers Jamilla Al Wahid and Phaedra Darwish, and a supportive and special audience. And, oh yeah, Siberian Huskies!!!

With love from Isis, Del and The Belly Dance Chronicles team

The May issue is available now!

Our Cover this issue spotlights A NEW BEGINNING for the Producers of Yaa Halla, Y’all and the Isis Foundation … Yalla Raqs the Palace … NEW locations … 3 days of workshops at the NEW Vine Arts Center with some of your favorites, and exciting Shows at the beautiful Palace Theater as well as NEW additional Competitions. We, like everyone else, are moving forward, creating a new life, a new way of doing things, while keeping our passion for dance and music alive and shared with the people we love. More new beginnings are coming for all of us.

Our feature article is an intensive look at Princess Rajah, striving for authenticity in a sensationalist environment by Stasha Vlasuk, with numerous historical photos. Welcome to It’s a No Brainer! by Amaya MariaElena, supporting dance movement, a life skill, for organic sake; and Mask Wearing Made Beautiful from MaShuqa Mira Murjan, looking glamourous while keeping you and others safe in the continuing Covid-19 climate. Ode to a Shimmy, a book review by Youssef Rakha of Sherifa Zuhur’s Popular Dance and Music in Modern Egypt, is a much-appreciated reprint with permission.

8 Belly Dance Performance Tips to Improve Your Public Speaking Skills by Kelli Nottingham, is an enjoyable read with terrific tips about your audience getting the message you’re trying to share with them; What Makes You Happy?, by Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan with photo by Carl Sermon Photography gives you a short clinical perspective for deep thought; and then she brings you a touchingly personal Part 2 Fifteen Years Later, Healing and Recovery, and Dealing with Self-doubt, updating her resilience, mantras and advice for healing and recovery with dance.

Showcasing some of those stepping up to perform with support of their studio and community during these “challenging” times: AUSTIN: The Story of one studio and a collective community by Bahaia Betsi Robins, a wonderful story of survival of studio and community; and Blue Lotus World Dance Company’s Sweetheart Hafla, a coming back from the Pandemic article by Nizana El Rassan with photos by Tony, Sarah, and Alex Sanchez. We do love photos!!! Which brings us to Beaucoup de Bellies March 2022 with photos by Carl F. Sermon – thank you, thank you.

Don’t forget, let’s continue to help keep those sensational Vendors in business, who create, advertise, stock and offer music, instruments, and so many costumes that make it possible for us to look and sound sensational. The Belly Dance Chronicles is grateful for the opportunity to support those who are advertisers and encourage you to check them out and support them also.

And a reminder: We truly look forward to receiving your articles and photos – if you have a passion for what you know and/or do – pass it on – be one of our terrific beloved writers. If you have an event, and you’re back in person performing or vending or you have a special zoom article of zoom photos and performances and want to promote one of those fabulous photographers you know by sending us your favorite photos, we’d love to see them. Now is the time to use that amazing creativity for which you are famous and give us a unique look at what you do and how you do it (dance AND music ideas) … on-line, in person, outdoors, and at event locations … live music, recorded music – we want it all!!!

Love,
Isis Bartlett, Del Bartlett, Cassie Dance, Heather, and The BDC Staff!

Our Cover Star this issue spotlights an inspiring life journey of the incredibly talented and beautiful Bozenka Arencibia, interviewed extensively by journalist, Tammye Nash. Bozenka’s challenges, her life’s story, and her incredible successes have created the warmth and joy she brings to her life and dance choices and her shared performance skills. Bringing her in from her life in Greece boosts our happiness!!

A special feature of a YHY favorite person and performer – Frank Farinaro, one of the premier male dancers – Culture, Heritage, History – Dance … an interview by Tammye Nash, is reprinted with permission from Dallas Voice and with photos also by Tammye Nash.

Preventing and Recovering from Mishaps by Nizana El Rassan, gives great suggestions for overcoming and dealing with mistakes; and Happy New Year from Bellydancer of the Universe Competition®, included separately a list of their last year’s competition winners.
If the Shoe Doesn’t Fit – Must We Change the Foot by Amaya MariaElena, is a terrific article on discovering who you are as a dancer; Overcoming Fear & Stage Fright, a truly helpful article by MaShuqa Mira Murjan with photos by Carl Sermon; and then rounding out the articles: Costume Inspiration – Yvonne De Carlo, Hollywood Harem Girl by Stasha Vlasuk, who also provided photos of Yvonne De Carlo’s harem girl movie career.

We’re so delighted that our terrific photographers have again shared some excellent Event Pictorials that showcases some of those stepping up to perform during these “interesting” times: Babdama 2021 photos by Carl. F. Sermon Photography; The Wings of Isis Belly Dance Company Halloween Hafla 2021, photos by Tammye Nash; and Beaucoup de Bellies Fall 2021, photos by Carl F. Sermon Photography. We love photos!!!

Don’t forget, let’s continue to help keep those sensational Vendors in business, who create, advertise, stock and offer music, instruments, and so many costumes that make it possible for us to look and sound sensational. We can’t wait to welcome those wonderful vendors back to our new THE EVENT – Yalla Raqs the Palace 2022 – Setting Our Dance World on Fire in North Texas.

The Belly Dance Chronicles is grateful for the opportunity to support those who are advertisers and encourage you to check them out.

We’re so excited to see that the world of dance “in person” is opening up a little bit. And the event photos are back! We’ve missed your faces, and we’ve missed seeing the wonderful Event Reviews our photographers so generously share. We are always delighted to focus on your events and photos … our hearts are with you always. We were ecstatic to see your events and to be publishing all the wonderful photos of your performers in a few in-person photo event reviews. Can’t wait for the glorious return of EVERYONE.

We hope you enjoy the photos in this September Fall issue as much as we do. Yeah, photos! Hot Raqs 2021 by Carl Sermon. Sirens Fest 2021 by Carl F. Sermon. Yaa Halla, Y'all Belly Dance Event & Competition – Yellow Rose of Texas Competition Winners 2021 by Tammye Nash. Yaa Halla, Y’all’s Instructor Stars 2021 by Carl F. Sermon. Love you!

Our Cover this issue is the original, beautiful, and continuously creating Kaeshi Chai of Bellyqueen. She’s an exquisite performer, a warm and loving instructor. We’re so happy to always welcome her to our events as she’s one of our favorites – she’s so supportive, kind, and knowledgeable, and a joy to work and be with.

Due to unforeseen life happenings, we are missing some of our wonderful writers this issue, but we are thrilled for the support by our additional, always appreciated, esteemed contributing and staff writers, and always love to welcome new writers: Prepare Smart for Your Performance: Nutrition and Hydration by Stasha Vlasuk has wonderful suggestions for self-care. MaShuqa Mira Murjan gives you much-needed core information in Seven Core Strengthening Floor Exercise with video by Carl Sermon. Don’t miss Helpful Tips and Hints for Dancers by Nizana El Rassan – it also includes wonderful photos. We have a meaningful poem Dancing Delight by Dorothea Rourke-O'Regan, and a fun article that all dancers will enjoy – I had a Talk with My Veil by new writer, Lisa Thomas.

We hope you are encouraged to be involved in the wonderful Course – Raks-ology Self-Paced Study Course in Middle Eastern Music, History and Dance by Jamie Lynn Shelton – reviewed by Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan.

We are missing Amaya in this issue, but it was magical having her gorgeousness at Yaa Halla, Y’all after all – she looked wonderful. We’re still sending prayers, love and hugs for quick healing for her and Pete. AND she’s back to teaching and traveling!! And we’ll be excited to have Fahtiem writing again.

Don’t forget, let’s continue to help keep those sensational Vendors in business, who create, advertise, stock and offer music, instruments, and so many costumes that make it possible for us to look and sound sensational. We enjoyed shopping with many of our favorites at Yaa Halla, Y’all 2021 – traveling is still difficult so we were truly grateful to the Vendor Team who was able to step up to the challenge – it was a special and joyous time.

The Belly Dance Chronicles is grateful for the opportunity to support those who are advertisers and encourage you to check them out.

And a reminder: We truly look forward to receiving your articles and photos – if you have a passion for what you know and/or do – pass it on – be one of our terrific beloved writers. 01/06/2021

How are you doing? Is 2021 working for you? How are you handling going out in public? Are you wearing your masks, still distancing, still wiping every surface with practically every touch? Whoaaaaa … we are and we have extensive safety plans for the “new” way of doing Yaa Halla, Y’all’s 20th Anniversary celebration IN PERSON, and of course, with the always present ZOOM! And adding Gala Shows, Competitions, and shopping in our NEW additional venue. Can’t wait for you to see it and to dance on the beautiful stage and watch shows in the plush seats.

Our Cover this issue is Yaa Halla, Y’all’s 20th year, showcasing the famous and outstanding talent we (Del and Isis) are, and have been, honored to present over TWENTY years. And this twentieth one isn’t at all the way we planned it – thanks to a pandemic! But we’re here, we’re standing, dancing, sharing the music and love, and keeping the passion for this Art form growing and inspiring. Thank you, to everyone coming this year and being a part of these 20 years of hard work, laughs, tears, sharing, showcasing, competing, friendship, music – it was so hard to not see your beautiful faces last year - you are so much an important part of our lives. And we are eternally grateful for the “Red Shirts”, our patient, talented and hard-working Star Dance Studio team over these many years.

We hope you enjoy the photos in this May Spring issue. We’ve really missed during 2020, and the first part of 2021, the many gorgeous photos shared by our outstanding photographers of Events around the world.

Thank you Carl F. Sermon, Joe Hill, Julie Adoranti and Tammye Nash for the beautiful photos in this issue of YHY and to Cassie Quinn for the layout of the gallery of performers. And to all the photographers who have shared their amazing photos of our dancers and drummers through the years – I cannot mention a few and unforgivably miss one – just know you are loved and appreciated.

Such a variety of Articles: The Athenian Corner Restaurant - an interview by Dorothea Rourke-O'Regan – shares the history of the restaurant from its very beginning as a “dream” into the current “being a dream destination”. Core Stabilization: Strengthening Exercises for Posture and Dance, by Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan with photos by Carl Sermon – gives you much-needed core information. And How to Endear Yourself to an Event Producer by Nizana El Rassan addresses the real-life work and that there truly is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that goes on behind the curtains, and how YOU can be a part of making the event overall better for everyone.

Thank you, Amaya, for the article “What’s in a Name?” – Prayers, love and hugs for quick healing for you and Pete! Performance Professionalism – Part 9 by Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan offers a problem-resolution on your Gait and Its Effect on Body Posture and Dance Movement Quality. Motivation to Dance During Pandemic, an article by Nizana, addresses the challenges of dancing online. My Journey Through Belly Dance “Dorothea” – “The Irish Belly Dancer from Lowell, MA” by Dorothea L. Rourke-O’Regan, is a fascinating memoir.

Yay, more photos! A Flashback of Rakkasah West 2010 by Carl F. Sermon. And yes, Ren Faires have opened in Texas – masks while in the audience, no patrons on stage, masks can be removed while on-stage with your team. We received photos from Scallywags Raqs Bellydance at Sherwood Forest Faire (photos by Robert Self & Vance Strickland), Shunyata at Texas Renaissance Festival (photos by Richard Butts, Caleb Pickens & Vance Strickland), and numerous photos of the large troupe, Wings of Isis and the Star Dancers who shared the stage at Scarborough Faire five at a time, different each day of eight weekends (photos by Scott Fischer and Jennifer McCoy).

Book Review – Dancing with Life: A Young Woman’s Quest for Art, Love, and Freedom, A Travel Memoir by Dhyanis Carniglia – is an “oh my gosh, I didn’t know any of this” review by Ma*Shuqa Mira Murjan.

Don’t forget, let’s continue to help keep those sensational Vendors in business, who create, advertise, stock and offer music and so many costumes that make it possible for us to look sensational and dance to great music. We will be so grateful for them if they’re still there when we’re actually able to perform regularly again! And some of our favorites and scheduled for Yaa Halla, Y’all 2021 – traveling is still difficult so we’re truly grateful to the Vendor Team who are stepping up to the challenge.

We are also always delighted to focus on your events and photos and are crushed at the continuing unexpected closing or postponed events. Our hearts are with you. We’re so grateful for our writers who have included photos … we’ve even included a few photos from the Ren Faires that Texas has been courageous in opening recently – BUT we miss hearing about your events and publishing all the wonderful photos of your performers – even the on-line ones!!!

And a reminder: We truly look forward to receiving your articles and photos – if you have a passion for what you know and/or do – pass it on – be one of our terrific beloved writers. If you have an event, promote one of those fabulous photographers you know by sending us your favorite photos. Now’s the time to use that amazing creativity you are famous for, and give us a unique look at what you do and how you do it.

With much love,
Isis, Del, and The BDC Staff

Thank you to Carl Sermon, MaShuqa Mira Murjan, Dorothea Rourke-O'Regan, Nizana El Rassan, Amaya, Tammye Nash, Julie Adoranti, Joe Hill, Robert Self, Jennifer Saule McCoy, Vance Strickland, and Scott Fischer.
