A couple of more Offical Selections for Remembrance! The Hang Onto Your Shorts Film Festival in New Jersey and the Vegas Cine Fest International FF.

When I was asked to work on it, I was to do so in the capacity of film mixer. I ended up adding a ton of supplementary ambiences and foley to further enhance the picture. It's always been a dream of mine to do some work on sci fi (being my favourite genre!) So the chance to work on one was a dream come true!

Got to mix this awesome film. There are some drop dead gorgeous sequences in this with some spectacular night footage and striking visual design. It's really interesting to approach something with so little dialogue from a mix perspective, but it's wonderfully satisfying to see it pulled off! In a great festival, give it a watch!

'Aggie' is a story of connection. A Polish girl meets an Australian at a coffee shop and they go on an adventure. It's a beautifully shot picture by Abhishek Samariya (who still shoots incredible films), and had some beautiful music by Lewis Ingham (who still writes incredible music!)

I got to edit an episode for the coolest podcast on the planet. I've been listening to Tonebenders for about 4 years now and I did a little chop chop to this one.

It's about Game On, a place of SERIOUS talent and equipment in Montreal. They do a whole host of AAA video games with Mo-cap and audio. It's super impressive and you should check it out.

We visit Game On in Montreal to get a tour of their massive Motion Capture stage and recording studios. Sam Giradin tells us about their audio workflow recording on the stage and in the booth when pus

Meet Kristina Kraskov, an engaging Documentariot I met a few years ago and have worked with a few times. Kristina writes stories about some difficult subjects, and works autonomously in the pursuit of some crazy goals! The last film we worked on had her travelling thousands of kilometres across the largest deserts in Australia to capture the work of some of the women behind our trucking industry.

Check out some of her work here!

Heavy Haulage Girls presented me with some fun challenges for Sound Design and Mixing. What do you do when you have one microphone stuck to a camera, no sound person, and you're in a HUGE truck driving across the desert? Bust out Izotope RX and learn the crap out of every function! Taking out all the truck noise, before adding it back in, in small doses becomes a good way of controlling the uncontrollable.

A great documentary about the women behind heavy haulage trucks that you can watch here;

Meet Ali Mozaffri. A filmmaker I almost stumbled into, as I was referred to by a former client. I couldn't be happier that I did so, as I found Ali one of those filmmakers with a truly unique outlook on film. Ali takes reverence from the masters of cinema, so working with him suddenly throws you into a very different place. We had a great time in the studio agonizing over Rigoberto's breathing, and used his performance as an amplifier for our sound design decisions.

Prisoner. A challenging film for sound. Sucking the air out of the room and focusing the audience on what it is like to be locked in a room for days on end. A stunning picture with some incredible shots in it. I really enoyed working with Ali Mozaffri on this, as he pushed me to think of sound in a really lateral way, and for the payoff to always be subtle and poignant.

Some of the process I've been playing with to split field recordings into multiple fields.

The process.
1. Find a suitable Recording
2. Decide layer deliniation of recordings
3. Use spectral copy/paste to remove outliers, while keep most of the recording intact
4. Use find similar and the brush tool to remove other elements
5. Silence or remove any other noise to avoid phase cancellation and other weird effects.

Colony. Sci-Fi film with a "blood in the water" backstory. All of the waves in this film are reversed, giving the entire picture an element of un-ease. Creating the acoustic ecology for this film was really interesting, as it's another planet and you can't exactly just drop in "forestambience.wav"! A sci-fi film that has gorgeous VFX and is supported by incredible makeup and prosthetics.

Lately, I've been working with Melissa Pons, an Audio Recordist out of Portugal. Together, we've been exploring methods of listening to some of the gorgeous recordings she has created of (now extinct) forests in Sweden. We've been working on an app to display these in, and in programming it, I've split the sounds into some layers of various frogs, birds and rain, so the listener has control over the various elements.

I've done this with some spectral editing in Izotope RX, and it's developing into something quite beautiful. I'll be keeping you all posted regarding the development of the app itself!

Meet Alexandra Galloway, a creative involved in Documentary, Drama and Music videos. We've completed work on Forbidden, a piece on feminine sexuality and the taboo of the subject. In mixing this piece, we focused on tying together ideas through the use of meticulously timed delays and reverbs.

My tools for this? SoundToys Crystalliser (sparkly otherworldliness), PrimalTap (quick fire delays), EchoBoy (space fillers and endless echoes) and Izotope Relay, to swap the stereo position between shots.

We had the premiere of the piece in a curated installation space.

I've just had a quick turnaround job for Documentarian Kristina Kraskov on DRIFT. A story about a woman finding her love of hiking.

I didn't receive the original dialog, and so had to make do with the bounce. Not a big issue, as I manage to time-sync the stock music, and use Izotope RX De-bleed to remove as much of it from the dialog as I could. This then gave me seperate voice and music.

From there, some Neutron EQ to remove room modal frequencies and masking treatment to remove the acoustic guitar. Some Dialog Isolate, Spectral De-noiser and Voice De-noise to remove some junk, and SoundToys LittlePlate to add some expressive music tails to link in-between shots.

How do you dialogue?

I worked with Jonathon Finney on the Sound Design for Tallebudgera Road, a piece on human connection as a young man struggles to find his place in the world. There were a ton of interesting elements we played with for the sound in the film, and I got to drown underwater for a bit, which is always fun. Check it out here;

Working on a new Audio Drama called the Mule has brought up some interesting Dialogue Editing issues. Many people, all recorded in their own studios all over the planet. In situations like this, I think it's really important to take a very finely detailed knife to each line of audio. It'll all go through heavy processing include isolation, compression and eq-matching, so any pop, click or nose fart can lead to disastrous, amplified results later.

Best way to go about these sorts of issues is a strong clip gain-approach, as well as the brush tools, with Spectral Repair or spectral copy-paste. Find a region with other bits, and paste over. As this particular edit was on a word, go for Spectral Repair. Everything gone! Just how I like it.

Meet Lewis Mulholland. A writer/director I've worked with on a few projects now. I've just completed Sound and a Mix for Creamy Boy, a hilarious short about an LA Rapper gone bigtime with a hankering for the white gold good stuff.

Lewis worked on top-secret films with major studios as a Writer’s Assistant to Chris McKay (Lego Batman). He worked with Sarah Scheller and Alison Bell on The Letdown Season 2 airing on ABC TV (Australia) and Netflix.

A really incredible film I was Sound Designer for. Tallebudgera Road. A gorgeous character drama where we played with temporal jumps in the edit, sound mnemonics and some heartbreaking breathing motifs. I had an absolute blast with Jonathon Finney (Director) on this, and cannot wait to work with him again! Check out the trailer below!
